Do We Want to Be Like Iowa—or Michigan? (Hour 2)
Is Wisconsin’s future more like what we’re seeing this year in Iowa—or Michigan? We will talk to Courier Newsroom journalists in both states, which have had very different legislative sessions. While Michigan Democrats have been advocating for democracy and equal rights, Iowa Republicans have been rolling things back.
Also: Despite a compromise that gave more state funding to public schools, some districts will still see less aid. We’ll hear from a superintendent in one large Wisconsin school district facing that crisis.
Fishy GOP Politics Up North (Hour 1)
Republican legislators up north are holding up a plan that could allow tens of thousands of acres of forestland to stay in private hands, stay on the tax rolls, and still be used for recreation, forestry jobs, and more. Are they holding out hope for bulldozers, strip malls and golf courses? Or is there a glint in their eyes from a metallic mining plan? Also, on this 4/20, we revisit our interview with an expert on Michigan’s legalization of marijuana.
High Time to Legalize Marijuana in Wisconsin? (Hour 1)
Wisconsin remains an outlier in the upper Midwest when it comes to legalizing marijuana, regulating its sale, and benefiting from the taxes it would generate. Michigan made the move four years ago, and we’ll talk to the leading journalist in that state about how things have gone and what lessons Wisconsin can take from it.
Nice Conspiracy Theory, but What Do You Stand For? (Oct 6 – Hour 2)
Editor Kyle Kaminski of The Gander, our sister outlet in Michigan, talks about the election races and how Republicans are not doing well in polling, largely because they don’t appear to be running on any ideas or policy—just reliving the 2020 election and pandemic safeguards. Also: Dr. Kristin Lyerly on her White House appearance to discuss the Republican assault on women’s health rights.
