The idea of going home may seem simple. But for young service members stationed around the globe, the costs can be prohibitive. Enter Larry Jackson. He started the Ben Jackson Foundation to award military members a “ticket home.” His heartfelt mission is inspired by his son. Ben passed away following an accident while serving overseas. He had just been home a few weeks earlier. But his dad had to help him purchase his ticket home. The Wisconsin-based foundation ensures service members who want to reconnect with loved ones don’t have to wait due to financial barriers.

“We’re about reuniting military families,” Jackson explains. “Many of these young men and women are only just beginning their careers. They can get time off, but without financial help, a ticket home from Japan or Germany might be out of reach. The foundation is one of very few that provides travel assistance for service members. And not just in times of emergency, but for any reason that supports their well-being.”

The foundation is fairly new, but has awarded hundreds of tickets, helping service members create cherished moments with family and friends. Every ticket awarded is backed by grassroots donations. It’s a testament to the widespread community belief in this effort.

“Our support has come from people who simply believe in helping. A $500 donation, for instance, can bring a young marine home from a U.S. base, while $1,000 can help cover international travel,” Jackson says.

The impact of these tickets home is profound. Jackson shares stories of a Marine from Janesville who was able to visit his dying grandfather. And a young Airwoman who reunited with her children after four years apart.

“These trips are a chance for these service members to reset, reconnect, and feel grounded. Going home is healing,” Jackson reflects.

Jackson hopes to continue the foundation’s growth knowing every dollar raised means one more military family reunion.

“Every dollar matters. Every shared story brings us closer to reuniting more families,” he says. “And I personally know the importance of having this time with your loved one.”
