Waukesha City Council Approves New Waste Management Contract

WAUKESHA, Wis. (WAUK) — The city of Waukesha is set to begin a new era in waste management as it transitions to John’s Disposal for garbage and recycling services starting March 31, 2025.

The Waukesha City Council recently approved a six-year contract with John’s Disposal, replacing the current provider, Waste Management, whose contract expires on March 28, 2025.

An informational website says John’s Disposal was selected through a competitive request-for-proposal process, evaluated on qualifications and pricing.

Under the new agreement, residents with automated pickup will receive new city-owned carts in March 2025. The standard sizes will remain 64 gallons for garbage and 96 gallons for recycling, with options for residents to select alternative sizes.

A significant change in the new contract involves bulky item and appliance pickup. These services will no longer be automatically included in weekly collections but will be available on-demand at the resident’s expense. This shift aims to ensure that only those using the service pay for it.

Properties with manual pickup, primarily in alleys, will continue their current service plan, including self-supplied garbage containers.

The initial contract runs through March 28, 2031, with the possibility of one or two one-year extensions.

John’s Disposal will provide a local phone number for customer service and maintains a website with additional information.

As the transition approaches, city officials plan to release more details about the new carts and other relevant information to ensure a smooth changeover for residents.
