MILWAUKEE, Wis (Civic Media) – Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Superintendent Keith Posley has announced his resignation, effective June 30, following a closed session meeting of the school board that lasted over five hours.  The board members voted unanimously to accept Posley’s resignation agreement, although the details of the agreement have not been made public at this time.

The decision to accept Posley’s resignation comes just days after state and federal officials expressed concerns about the district’s financial operations, which could potentially impact funding to the district.  The district’s financial reports were reportedly 8 months overdue, and there were also issues with the district’s Head Start program, resulting in the suspension of federal funding.

Until a new superintendent is found, Southwest Regional Superintendent Eduardo Galvan will be heading up day-to-day operations. The board is also working to ensure that the district files the necessary financial reports that are due to the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). The Office of Accountability and Efficiency in the district has recently brought on board Todd Gray, a former Waukesha schools superintendent.

Dozens of people from the community attended the board meeting, with many demanding that Posley lose his job.  Some speakers even mentioned the possibility of a recall effort against certain board members.
