A Mount Horeb Middle School was sent into lockdown during an active shooter situation on Wednesday morning.

According to a Facebook post from the Mount Horeb Area School District, the school went into full lockdown at around 11:15 am on Wednesday morning.

The threat was reportedly neutralized outside of the Middle School and the individual was not able to breach the entryway into the school. School officials advised people not to go to the campus as law enforcement authorities swept the area to ensure the safety of all of the students.

“An initial search of the middle school has not yielded additional suspects,” the school district said in a social media post. “As importantly, we have no reports of individuals being harmed, with the exception of the alleged assailant.”

The district began releasing students Wednesday afternoon at reunification centers in the city.

In a tweet, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers assured residents that he had been briefed on the incident and was closely monitoring the situation.

“I have been briefed on the incident at the Mount Horeb Area School District and am closely monitoring the situation,” Evers said. “I am praying for the health and safety of our kids, educators, and staff and grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond.”

“May 1st, 2024 will be a date not forgotten,” Dane County Executive Joe Parisi said. “Moments like this turn lives upside down, cause trauma, sorrow, and a moment of reflection for all of us.”

There has been no information released regarding the identity of the assailant or what their motive may have been.
