MILWAUKEE (WAUK) – President Joe Biden highlighted his plans to help strengthen the national economy during his stop in Milwaukee on Wednesday.
Biden, speaking at the Wisconsin Black Chamber of Commerce, highlighted investments in small businesses and communities by his administration, which has led to an increase in new businesses.
“Since Kamala and I entered office, America has filed a record number of, in less than 3 years, 15 million new applications to start new businesses,” Biden said. “The investments we’re making offer opportunity, hope to communities to fully participate in the economy.”
Biden said that people in Milwaukee are also seeing signs of a strengthening economy.
“In Milwaukee, business applications are up 70 percent compared to before the pandemic,” Biden said.
Biden also announced that Milwaukee would be one of 22 cities competing for federal grants to grow small businesses.
In his speech, Biden took jabs at former president Donald Trump and Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson on their economic policies. Biden also said that despite the Supreme Court’s ruling on student loan forgiveness, he was still able to relieve debt for 136 million people.
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers also spoke at the event, highlighting the state’s success in using federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act to support small businesses in Wisconsin.
About $150 million has been spent in Wisconsin to support small businesses, according to a release from the White House. Over $10 billion has been set aside nationally as part of the ARPA.
Biden’s speech lasted 17 minutes.
