RIPON, Wis (WRPN)-A 29-year-old woman and her 8-month-old child are safe, and a 32-year-old man in custody following a standoff incident at 868 Martin Avenue in Fond du Lac Wednesday evening.

According to police an officer was working on an unrelated issue when two family members approached expressing concern for the mental health of their son. They had received suicidal text messages from him. The officer also learned that a woman and her child were not being allowed to leave an apartment. The man was armed with a box cutter.

When additional police officers arrived the man released the woman and child. They were taken to a safe location. Additional reports of domestic violence were reported throughout the day. Neighbors were asked to shelter in place while the man remained inside the apartment.

SWAT and other specialty teams were activated. A search warrant was executed for the apartment, and the man was taken into custody.

Fond du Lac Police Chief Aaron Goldstein says, “We are incredibly thankful this traumatic incident ended without further harm to a mother and her child.”
