Weekly Best of Dom Salvia Show for Jan 18

January 18, 2025

Catch up on the best of this week's segments and join us on Monday for more!

First, Jack Smith's report on the January 6th insurrection and Donald Trump's role in it, with Maggie Daun from Tuesday's first hour.

Then, how bad of a problem is wealth inequality? Hear from our favorite Delano Democrat Harvey Kaye from the second hour of Monday's show.

Next, on Wednesday, the warring parties in Israel and Gaza agreed to a three phase ceasefire and hostage deal. The event bears strange echoes to the Iranian hostage crises of 1979-1980, which Dom discusses with Matt Rothschild and a disgruntled frequent caller with too much disinformation in his diet. This, from the first hour of Wednesday's show.

Finally, we remember Mr. Baseball, Bob Uecker, with Civic Media sports reporter Mike Clemens from the first hour of our Thursday show.

Have a great weekend, we'll catch ya on Monday!

Hard truths and a moment of beauty (Hour 2)

January 15, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us as cohost today.

Today, Pam Bondi, President-elect Trump's pick for Attorney General faced Senate questioning. Unlike the nominee for Secretary of Defense, Bondi actually seems to possess the necessary skills and experience to fulfill the leadership position. Unfortunately, just like her fellow Cabinet nominee, Pam's primary qualifying merit for the position is her undying loyalty to Donald Trump. She represented Trump in his first impeachment trial of his first administration. Bondi campaigned with him in 2020 and pushed the Big Lie that the election was stolen from him. Even today in her hearing, she refused to say even once that Joe Biden won the 2020 election. Her inability to commit to being impartial and independent from Trump deeply worried Democratic senators today. And it deeply worries us.

We end the show with a moment reflecting on the healing majesty of nature with Wendell Berry's poem "The Peace of Wild Things" in our recurring Tell Me Something Good segment.

Ceasefire, finally. (Hour 1)

January 15, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us today as cohost.

Today, the combating parties in Israel and Gaza reached a historic ceasefire agreement. The ceasefire agreement, brokered with mediators from the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, follows President Biden's proposed plan from May 2024. After over 15 months of devastating war, we take a few moments to cherish this relief. If followed to completion, this deal will lead to a permanent ceasefire. There is not, however, any language in the deal to work towards a true permanent solution that creates a state for the Palestinian people. Without a path to self-determination, we fear a return to this situation before too long.

One at at time! (Hour 2)

January 8, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us for as cohost for today's show.

President Joe Biden, in an interview with the New York Times, continues to claim that he could have won a rematch against Trump for the presidency. In the same interview, Biden admits that perhaps- perhaps- he would not have been able to serve through another four years. Come on man... it's time to be the bridge you promised, not a wall.

President-elect Trump- who could do with a reminder that the United States only ever has ONE President at a time and it's NOT HIM YET- continues to fight the prosecutions against him. Trump is due for sentencing in the election interference through fraudulent financial documents. Today, he seeks SCOTUS interference to delay or dismiss the case once more. In *some* good news (maybe?), Merrick Garland announced that he intends for Jack Smith's Special Counsel report on January 6th, 2021 to reach the public.

Civic Media Sports Reporter, Mike Clemens joins us for the final segment for one more update on the Packers' post-season prospects.

Referenda for we and not for thee says Robin Vos (Hour 1)

January 8, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us for as cohost for today's show. We begin with voting rights. Once more, Wisconsin Republicans move to put a Constitutional referenda on the next ballot to 'make voting more secure' through voter ID. Of course what that will really accomplish is voter suppression. The Wisconsin Legislature seeks to change our state Constitution through referendum proposed to the citizens. But why can't citizens propose referenda in a similar manner, to be voted on through state-wide ballots? Governor Evers is proposing just that, though Legislative Republicans, lead by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos assert that the measure is DOA- dead on arrival.

Returning Ourselves (Hour 2)

December 18, 2024

Matt Rothschild and Angela Lang, Executive Director of BLOC, guest cohost today.

At the top of the hour, Matt and Angela wrestle with the aftermath of the Abundant Life Christian School mass shooting on Monday. What should be done to protect students, teachers, and all those who use our schools? And what right do we have to know the personal information of those impacted by these tragedies? If you are searching for a way to help those affected by the shooting, one path is to donate to help the community. Among many options, United Way of Dane County has organized a fundraiser you can contribute to here.

We end the show with Wisconsin Poet Laureate, Nick Gulig. He talks with us about how to return to ourselves through poetry. How can we navigate the 'cacophony of ailments' that plague the MAGA cult and the poisonous narcissism of Trump?

Lessons and Legacies (Hour 1)

December 18, 2024

Matt Rothschild and Angela Lang, Executive Director of BLOC, guest cohost today.

US Rep Mark Pocan (D, WI-02) joins Matt and Angela at the top of the hour to discuss where we are, where we've been, and where we're going. They're big topics, and worth exploring. The three begin with a somber reflection on the Abundant Life Christian School mass shooting on Monday. Then, they move into where the Democratic party needs to move to retain voters and attract new demographics.

At the bottom of the hour, Farmer Hans Breitenmoser joins Matt and Angela for a talk on representation and immigration. What lessons did we learn from the fight for fairer maps in Wisconsin? And what lessons do we need to learn in this fight over immigration that President-elect Trump is waging?

Weekly Best of Dom Salvia Show for Dec 14

December 14, 2024

Catch up on this week's best segments!

First, from Monday's second hour, a conversation with our favorite DELANO DEMOCRAT (Dom's making it a thing), Harvey Kaye. What do Democrats need to do to start winning again?

Next, revisiting Tuesday's second hour where we covered the 10 new charges levied against Wisconsin's fake electors. We also spent significant time covering this subject on Thursday with Jim Santelle. Listen to him disagree with Dom's glee over the new charges during our second hour with Jim.

Speaking of Jim Santelle, come back to our first hour with him on Thursday for the next segment. Did undercover FBI agents instigate the January 6th, 2021 assault on the Capitol?

Finally, wrap up with a bit of poetry as we come back to our second hour with Matt Rothschild on Wednesday. Take a few minutes to appreciate Nikki Giovanni's revolutionary life and words.

Sports, Health, and Poetry (Hour 2)

December 11, 2024

Matt Rothschild cohosts today. Starting the hour, some sports talk. Political news if often overwhelming, so we each have ways to decompress. Dom's choice is usually to watch a game. However, Dom found politics creeping in last night as he noticed referees wearing Emirates' badges on their uniforms. Doing as Dom does, he went to the Google to see what was up, and found that the Emirates were named the official airline partner of the NBA. This led to further Googling, where Dom learned that the 2034 World Cup will be held in Saudi Arabia. Both the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have unsavory records on human rights. These events appear to be the latest in "sportswashing".

At the bottom of the hour, we bring updates on the murder of Brian Thompson, who was CEO of United Healthcare.

We finish the show with a reflection on the life of Nikki Giovanni, an American poet, activist, and author who created extensively on themes of Black joy and social justice. For an enlightening experience, watch this conversation between Nikki Giovanni and James Baldwin.

Searching, searching for a backbone… Nothing.(Hour 1)

December 11, 2024

Matt Rothschild cohosts today. This hour, we're covering current FBI Director Christopher Wray's announcement that he plans to step down from the position in January before Trump takes office. Wray's announcement is the latest act of obedience in advance, in direct contrast to Timothy Snyder's urging to resist fascism. If he had an iota of backbone, Wray could have held his position- which lasts 10 years to keep the FBI independent from overt politics- instead of resigning so Trump can install Kash Patel.
