Yes, We Have No Bananas (Hour 2)

July 1, 2025

Heavy rain last week put limits on fieldwork for Wisconsin farmers. We’ll review the latest conditions with Hans Breitenmoser. And we’ll congratulate the Trump administration for needing only five months to understand we can’t grow bananas, coffee, or cocoa beans here, so maybe those tariffs that drive up consumer prices need to be adjusted.

Wisconsin’s Childcare Crisis: Ticking Time Bomb

June 25, 2025

As Wisconsin’s childcare funding cliff approaches, up to 90,000 slots could vanish by June 30—leaving families and providers in a state of emergency. Guests Corrine Hendrickson and Tricia Peterson sound the alarm, detailing how families could soon face monthly costs exceeding $1,600. Despite a $4 billion state surplus, GOP leaders Robin Vos and Devin LeMahieu have yet to take meaningful action. This bipartisan crisis threatens working parents, the economy, and the stability of early childhood education statewide. Maggie also explores the role of honest political messaging in shaping voter trust and the outcomes of future elections.

Evers Draws a Red Line (Hour 2)

June 24, 2025

There are many ways to illustrate the divide between Democrats and Republicans. One of the more recent ones is now officially at the center of the state budget debate, after Gov. Tony Evers said he would not sign a state budget bill that doesn’t include funding for a program that addresses the shortage of affordable childcare in Wisconsin. We’ll talk to a daycare provider who’s been leading the charge on making this issue more visible.

Childcare Cuts & Political Hypocrisy

May 12, 2025

Maggie and guest co-host Matt Rothschild dissect the GOP's budget cuts in Wisconsin, particularly the $480 million slash to childcare funding, highlighting the hypocrisy in their 'family values' rhetoric. Corrine Hendrickson with Main Street Alliance and daycare owner joins to emphasize the impact on childcare providers, predicting a 25% shutdown statewide if cuts persist. Republicans prioritize tax cuts for the wealthy over essential childcare support and exacerbate the crisis for working families.

Maggie and Matt also touch on the Trump administration's tariff policies and their adverse effects on middle-class Americans while Trump and his administration continue to accumulate personal financial gains.

Civic Media Spotlight for May 10th & 11th (Hour 2)

May 10, 2025

Up first this hour, State Rep Amaad Rivera-Wagner of the Green Bay area joins the Todd Allbaugh Show to talk about how he's working across the aisle to preserve the Green Bay Conservation Corps, Wisconsin's only local municipal branch of AmeriCorps. There's some really great stuff here about how people of WI (particularly GB) want to take care of each other.

Then on Maino & the Mayor, Alicia Wenger joins the show from Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services in Oshkosh. She shares the story of the organization's namesake and talks about all of the services that they offer individuals and families. Christine Ann touches the whole community from in-school programs to community education sessions.

Following that, Corinne Hendrickson is a child care professional and returns to Matenaer On Air to talk about the National Day of Action event happening on May 12 and the dire need for child care funding increases, which seems to be on the chopping block by the Wisconsin GOP. This will be their fourth year running "Day Without Childcare" as an event, which is taking place state-wide, too.

We wrap up the hour with a clip from Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba talking fairways and greens. Pete and producer Konrad talk about Kon’s golf game. Kon brags that he broke 100, and Pete jokes he almost did as well, but the windmill messed him up.

Investing In Our Kids Is Common Sense (Hour 2)

May 6, 2025

Our producer Aaron is back today, which lines up perfectly with the latest edition of What’s Worse: sweating or shivering? We also call Pat Kreitlow live on the air to ask about a scheduling issue, and hilarity ensues.

At the bottom of the hour, Matt Raboin of Brix Cider and Corrine Hendrickson of Corrine’s Little Explorers join us to talk about the dire state of childcare in Wisconsin. Despite plentiful research demonstrating the incredible economic return when the government invests in childcare, states like ours are refusing to contribute any money. Tonight, Main Street Alliance is holding a Community Conversation about Child Care at Brix Cider in Mt. Horeb at 6 pm. (note: while normally closed on Tuesdays, Brix is indeed open tonight for this event.)

Talking Tikes and Tourism, Too (Hour 2)

May 6, 2025

Some parents are going to learn the hard way next Monday that Wisconsin remains stuck in a crisis over the lack of affordable childcare options. Many childcare providers will shut their doors as part of the national Day Without Child Care, designed to put pressure on lawmakers to do right by families, the workforce shortage, and the overall economy. Also: On this National Tourism Day, we get an update on one special segment of the market from the Wisconsin Agricultural Tourism Association.

Nixon Was an Amateur (Hour 2)

April 11, 2025

We’re 50 years removed from Watergate, when Richard Nixon faced impeachment for trying to use the US Department of Justice to go after his political enemies. Now Donald Trump is weaponizing DoJ in ways that make Nixon look like an amateur. So we’ll ask our Week In Review panel if turnabout is fair play: Can we stop pretending that president’s cannot face criminal charges when they commit actual crimes? Also: Corrine Hendrickson has results of a statewide survey of childcare providers, showing the dire straits the industry is in—and could get worse if Republicans writing the next state budget leave them high and dry.

Do It For the Kids (Hour 2)

April 9, 2025

If the state budget is going to live up to Gov. Tony Evers’ wish that it reflect what he calls “The Year of Kid,” legislators are going to have to do more to shore up support for child care and for special education in our schools. We’ll get updates on this and everything else in front of the legislature with child care advocate Corrine Hendrickson and Bryn Horton of the Wisconsin Public Education Network.
