Civic Media Spotlight for January 11th & 12th (Hour 1)

January 11, 2025

On the Dom Salvia Show, Dom, with cohost of the day Jim Santelle, talks with Jack Kelly, statehouse reporter for Wisconsin Watch on the upcoming Wisconsin Supreme Court race. Read Jack's most recent piece on the current and potential future status of the state's highest court here. With a current 4-3 liberal-conservative population and a liberal justice retiring, April's election will decide whether the current balance maintains or tips to the conservatives.

Then, on John and Gordy In the Morning, the guys talk with Pam Jahnke about the premiere of Green and Gold, the new movie shot in Wisconsin about the Green Bay Packers.

Next, on UpNorthNews Radio, Assembly Minority Leader Rep. Greta Neubauer (D-Racine) and new state Sen. Sarah Keyeski (D-Lodi) discuss the opening of the new session of the Wisconsin Legislature. They had big hopes for bipartisan progress, now that fairer maps have made the Assembly and Senate more representative of Wisconsin voters. But Republicans have spent the week rushing to pass a voter suppression measure and even stripping away Democratic seats on committees.

Wrapping up the hour on the Maggie Daun Show, Maggie talks about one of her New Year intentions, not resolutions, of playing more. Maggie shares some of her favorite board games and takes calls and texts for recommendations about what games she can work into her intention to play more in 2025.

Civic Media Spotlight for January 4th & 5th (Hour 2)

January 4, 2025

To begin the second hour this weekend, John and Gordy, of WMDX's morning program the John and Gordy Show, talk with Jim Santelle about being an intern at the White House in the summer of 1980 during the Carter administration, and how his presidency is unjustly overlooked.

Then, the Earl Ingram Show is joined by Alan Borsuk, Senior Fellow in Public Policy at Marquette Law School, to discuss the issues facing Milwaukee Public Schools. Earl and Alan talk about the politics of how the state funds education, how mismanagement led to the current problems, and the path ahead for the district.

After that on the Dom Salvia Show, Dom and cohost of the day Earl Ingram discuss the desperate need for elder leaders to pass the torch. With the average age of a US Senator being 68 years and a distinct lack of youth voices in politics, it's no wonder young people didn't turn up to vote. We need elected officials who represent AND resemble their constituents.

We close out the weekend with a segment from WGBW and WISS's morning program, Maino and the Mayor. The guys talk about this day in 1967 when the famed Ice Bowl took place in Green Bay. The Packers beat the Cowboys, and the goalpost came down. We visited this great memory with several guests, including former reporter Tony Walter. He shares many great stories based on that day in his book "Ice Bowl: The Game That Will Never Die."

Civic Media Spotlight for December 21st & 22nd (Hour 2)

December 21, 2024

It was 80 years ago this week that the Battle of The Bulge took place in WWII, and 100-year-old veteran Jack Kraszewski of Pulaski joined Maino & The Mayor and shared memories of that very day. Not only did he serve our country, but he also came back and became a cheesemaker and later a brewer of Schlitz beer in Milwaukee. A wonderful gentleman that we are honored to have met.

Then, on the Dom Salvia Show, Dom and cohost of the day Earl Ingram address the looming government shutdown and who is casting its shadow: Elon Musk. No one elected Musk, but people DID elect their legislators, who are now being overtly threatened by Trump and Musk.

On the John & Gordy Show, the guys are joined by Mike McCabe to talk about his latest digital piece on the parallels between 1930’s Bank Robbers and Luigi Mangione as folk heroes in the American psyche.

Last but not least, Todd Allbaugh Show has been following the closure of two-year UW campuses since the canary first stopped singing, and the saga is unfortunately far from over. A new article from WORT details that the Board of Regents spent a staggering $51 million on consultants over the last four years- over THREE TIMES the budget deficit in that same period that led to catastrophic layoffs at UW Oshkosh. We know the Republicans are behind this, but where are the Democrats? They aren't exactly trying to stop it.

Civic Media Spotlight for the Week of November 18th (Hour 1)

November 23, 2024

On the Dom Salvia Show, Maggie Daun sticks around after her 2-4pm show to do some Overtime radio-ing with Dom as she does every Tuesday! On this week's Over Time w/Maggie Daun, former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman faces a SERIOUS disciplinary filing from our state's Office of Lawyer Regulations. For, well, violating just about every attorney ethics standard there is.

Then on the Todd Allbaugh Show, Todd dives into the story developing in Mauston, where a series of failed referendums to fund their public schools have left the school district in dire straits. They may have to dissolve completely! With the help of a caller who used to teach in Milwaukee, Todd explains how we got to this point, as well as some tricky ways our GOP-led state legislature diverts even more money to private schools.

After that on UpNorthNews Radio, whatever reason folks were thinking of when voting for Donald Trump, they’d better prepare for the impact on food prices and the economy. Dairy farmer Hans Breitenmoser talks to Pat Kreitlow about how mass deportations would cripple every part of America’s food supply chain and higher tariffs would lead to skyrocketing grocery prices.

In the final segment of this Spotlight, the John and Gordy Show is joined by Tim Slekar of the BustED Pencils podcast, to talk about the second Trump Administration’s announcement of Linda McMahon as the Secretary of Education.
