We're going to be playing a new game today.
I, I want to apologize to everyone playing a new game at 10 35.
It's called take it or leave it.
It's the golden globes edition.
We're going to be joined by senior producer Tucker.
He'll be, he's prepared a list and we're going to go through that fun.
We're going to talk about the golden globes.
It happened last week, but it's this Friday as we do on Friday now, take it or leave it golden globes edition 10 35.
And then this shouldn't be a thing.
Yeah, today's, this shouldn't be a thing is very weird.
I won't lie.
It's very, very weird, but you guys do stay tuned for that coming up.
And then we're going to be talking about whole milk.
It's back baby back better than ever.
Those kids are going to be drinking all sorts of whole milk, whole milk for everyone, at least if you're in schools.
But I want to kick off the second hour talking about a story in the Wisconsin examiner by Baylor Spears entitled, Wisconsin's revenue estimates about 1.5.
billion higher than expected.
And I wanted to bring on somebody to talk about this.
And I thought, who better to talk about this than someone who is running for office?
That's right.
Kareen Hendrickson is still here.
Still our guest, she stuck around because what I want to talk about with regard to the budget surplus, spending all goes back to everything we've been discussing the past hour.
Kareen Hendrickson was our guest last hour.
She is running for state Senate in district 17.

Really quick, I didn't ask you this.
What is District 17?
What is the layout?
You live in Nouglares, but what would you be representing?
Yeah, so District 17 with the new maps is all of Crawford, Grant, Iowa, Lafayette, Green Counties, and then the zip codes of Mount Orabelleville, Oregon, and Brooklyn.
So it's pretty easy to figure out because it actually follows sense.
It also is a competitive district for the first time in a very, very, very long time.
is an opportunity for us to flip not only the seat, but it could flip the state.
So no
pressure.
I didn't say anything, but that is something we saw in the last election.
We saw Democrats pick up more seats.
We saw there is, there is talk of what's called the trifecta.
I'm not going to get into that because I don't, you know, just let's just one day at a time.
It's the election.
There's going to be lots of election talk coming up in the next few months, but something that you said during our secret show, which by the way, if you want to take part in the secret show,

We discussed the fact, you know, we Kevin from McGowan ago the same WA UK we have differing opinions I get that you have an opinion on public school that I do not share
But you have the information that you've been given.
I understand that.
And something you said is that going into these, whether it's businesses or homes or going to events, you're just having conversations informing people.
And that's what people want now.
They want that conversation because there's so much happening on social media in the news.
So what do you hear from people when you're just sitting down having a chat?
Your
What are you thinking and why and here's where I'm thinking and staying away from like
going online and showing links and stuff doesn't seem to work.
It seems to be more of like, these are some good sources for you to go to for actual information.
And here's some from, you know, middle, center, right, center, left, you know, so you get a different viewpoint.
And
And then
agree.
And really, I don't introduce myself as a certain party.
I never really identified as a party because I don't think it should be a team sport.
And I don't think you're going to agree with everything of one party.
And that's why more and more people are independent.
And that's fine.
And it's the way, you know, you should be thinking about the person and what they value.
Like, yes, you can look at the letter to get an idea, but you don't actually know unless you talk to that person and actually listen.
And same thing, the candidates,
like myself when I'm out I need to listen to what people are telling me and then have a conversation and not just listen so I can respond to what they're saying and with how they're wrong but really listen to what they're saying, meet their concerns, understand where they're coming from and then really just talk through like well what do you think?
How do you think?
You may not know right now but here's my information you can get back to me and I've done that a couple times and then we've had second conversations and third conversations and really just seeing each other as humans and I think
We've kind of gotten past the social media bubbles and things and people are wanting to engage with each other a little bit more and not in a way to like, gotcha in person.
It's more of a, how do we come to a consensus?
I hate the word compromise right now because compromise at this point means you get 90% of what you want.
I get 10%.
You need
watch what happens with that solution.
Back to it if necessary and tweak around the edges or really ask people like, hey, this is an idea.
What are some unintended consequences that I'm not thinking of that you can think of because this is your life.
This is your reality.
And that coming from the advocacy world, that's why I'm like kind of flipping that.
And this is the kind of person I want in charge.
And so like really coming to those conversations and it's not easy.
I've had lots of practice over the years.
My family is very large and ranges the whole spectrum.
And so I've
I noticed too, and with the sign that's behind you, it's purple.
And I imagine that's probably by design to show that, you know, because you can get caught up even in the color of the sign.
And purple is a sign of royalty.
It's a sign of what this state is, is a purple state.
But it's also not saying I'm on.
And I know this might be funny to some people who listen to the show and think that I am a mouthpiece shill for the Democratic Party.
I am not, I am not a member of either party.
I consider myself an independent, my voting patterns, valleys and morals.
may fall along one line, but I am certainly not against, uh, critiquing, criticizing either party.
And when I say party, I really mean the party as a machine because I think that's a bigger, a big problem as well to Karine is that machine party politics makes it difficult one to, to break through the noise specifically for folks who are elected, who want to do good work because they are hampered by their own party's politics.
in, in words, as far as the perception outwards.
And then on top of that, folks like me, who is not an elected official who just like, I believe what I believe.
And I have to, and, and if I disagree with my, with the party, I'm seen as, I mean, I said this, let me, I'll say this much better cream.
I said this a couple of weeks ago, I am happy criticizing the GOP.
I'm happy to do that.
I have no problem with doing that.
And people who listen to this show might really like what I do.
But I have also faced messages from people who say, don't criticize this person.
Don't talk about this.
How dare you.
You sound like a Republican.
So it's like really difficult to have those conversations.
And I think what you're talking about is getting people in a room and saying, all right, it's just me and you.
You're literally safe in here.
You can say whatever you want.
But just know I'm here for the conversation, not for the gotcha, not for the I got you there or you're wrong or you're bad.
And that has to be a daunting task on top of running for office.
So it
It comes through as, you know, honest.
And because it is, I'm not just pretending.
And I have no qualms calling out either party for things that they do wrong or even saying, hey, you did something right.
I have no qualms with that.
And I think that's what we need to be doing overall and really looking at who we're hiring, not voting for hiring for these positions and who we're firing.
Because if you look at it that way, it takes it, it makes you think a little bit differently when you go to folk tell.
In the few minutes we have left, unless you stay here forever, you can just stay here forever.
You can move in.
Come on in.
We have other people here to shovel.
The news out of the Wisconsin examiner is that the Wisconsin revenue estimates about 1.5 billion higher than expected.
We've been sitting on surpluses for a while, but it seems like they're not going anywhere.
It seems like it's just a big pile of money that Robin Voss is sitting on.
I love the Joker in the dark night.
We have this money.
Come on.
If you win, if you're in office, if you get the job, if they hire you, what do you see the surplus as a motivation or a tool for this state as far as growth?
To make sure that we're fairly allocating money to our rural communities, especially in our poorer communities, because it's not fair that those who use the most get the most tax cuts.
And that is what the Republicans have said they want to do with this money.
Personally, I think right now in the next month, we need to get the postpartum 12 month Medicaid expansion done.
We have the money now, obviously.
You know, that is just women are dying.
full stop monster dying.
Yes, it needs to end.
And then another one would just be that special education getting it to some sufficient so that the $140 million that they accounted for incorrectly in the joint finance committee budget gets allocated correctly because
The schools are counting on that money.
It's $140 million that then
you're
going to have to cut teacher staff programs because you can't get money right now to cover that and looking at child care and getting that $480 million.
over the finish line so child cares can hire their teachers, family child can stay in business, more classrooms can get open, more kids can get into care, more parents can go back to work and that money will come right back in the form of higher income taxes collected because hey news flashers, people are working, they're paying more in income taxes, they'll have more money to spend so sales tax, employers, small business owners would be able to actually have fully staffed.
businesses, people could start businesses.
That's another big barrier is the lack of access to childcare for people to do it.
And so those would be the big ones I would start with.
And then affordable housing is something we need to tackle.
But part of that is your property taxes.
And if we get the state to invest appropriately, property taxes will maintain or should go down.
And that means that your housing costs and your renting costs will go down.
It sounds like to me, Kareen, you're talking about long range planning with investments that have ROI over the course of five, 10, 15, 20, 30 years.
And ultimately something I feel like we should be talking about more is their concern of people leaving or coming here.
And when you have a state that invests properly on all matters,
That is what makes you attractive to people say in Illinois or Minnesota, like, oh, I live in Wisconsin.
That's really good schools.
All that.
I mean, that's just what it feels like what you're talking about is they say, hey, let's plan for 2030, 2040, 2050 and growing this country because that's what you need to do to thrive, not just survive.

Now, Calvin, I don't know if you know this, but we were in a deficit for a long time.
We were, we were, some would say we're in a deficit of money.
Some were in deficit of caring.
We're in a loneliness epidemic, but one of the biggest deficits is the fact that kids for almost a decade, for more than a decade, we're not able to access whole milk in school.
Now, Calvin, you are of an age where 10 years, plus years ago, you were in high school.
Do you remember going to school with like slumped over shoulders, just saying yourself, my life would be complete if I could just access whole milk?
So this,
Probably will not come out as a shock to you.
You
don't drink milk, do you?
Yeah, I've never liked it.
Even when I was a kid, when you get hot lunch at school, you get milk.
That's what you get.
When there was something that I liked, like chicken nuggets or pizza, and I got a hot lunch from school, my mom would still send juice boxes with me because I didn't like milk.
Not even a
water guy couldn't even do water.
I just like to have something nice with my lunch.
Yeah, I've never, and this is also not the point of this segment and not something I should be admitting, but I've never been big on drinking water and is a bad habit that I need to change.
Calvin, Calvin, Calvin, Calvin, Calvin.
Just do me a favor.
One cup, just one cup a day.
That's all I ask.
Try one cup a day.
Don't do eight.
You don't have to do a big gallon jug.
Just do one cup today.
That's all I ask you to do.
That's my, my, my, me asking a favor of you, one cup of water, please.
I mean, I guess I just don't see the point.
This
is not the point of this.
But you derailed it with, I don't drink water.
I mean, come on now.
All right, you're right.
So the reason why I'm bringing up whole milk and it's important to every child here in America,
Because that is what concerns us and our children's well-being is that in more than a decade, children will be able to access whole milk as part of their lunchroom options in schools across the country.
This change comes after President Donald Trump signed the whole milk and healthy kid, whole milk for healthy kids act into law, law.
Expanding what schools are allowed to serve but not requiring districts to make any changes.
So basically, you can serve it if you want, but you don't have to.
Now, I know I'm coming off very, very snarky and snotty, and I get it, but that's part of my brand.
It's also fired up Friday.
along with 2% low fat, fat free and non-dairy options, you will be able to access if the school district allows to have whole milk.
The reason actually I bring this up is because there are some dietary concerns that people have because whole milk does contain a lot of saturated fat.
And it's just important to make sure your kids diet, you know, looking after that, because other things that like cheese, butter, meat, desserts, processed stuff, processed snacks, chips, things of that nature.
You know, it's just for me saying, all right, you know,
I personally don't care if whole milk is in schools.
I don't think we needed a law.
I don't think we needed a piece of paper from the president saying, yeah, you can do this if you want, but you don't have to if you don't want to.
I mean, to me, it's just say, do what you want.
But I bring it up to say that, A, this is not something that should be concerning us.
This is not something that is keeping our children from learning.
It's not something that's keeping our children from being safe.
And two, if they are drinking the whole milk,
Just be aware.
Just be understanding that their diet's going to be impacted by this other thing.
So that's all I wanted to say.
Yeah, it took me a long time to get there.
And we found that Calvin hates water apparently.
But the point is we all got educated together.
Drink your milk if you want.
That's cool.

We can talk about, uh, you know, Johnny Carson hosting and whatnot.
But we talk about Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes, just lambasting and lamponing and roasting the industry they're giving awards out to.
Nikki Glaser, I think, is in the same vein.
I think Conan did an amazing job with the Oscars and took the stuffiness of the Oscars and made it accessible and very fun.
But yes, Nikki Glazer, honestly, Nikki Glazer, take it for all, like whether it's the awards or anything, I think she is fantastic.

Yeah, she gets a lot of praise.
I think she's great and she does these quick jokes that I think hit well for that format.

I can't imagine that sometimes you're not going to embarrass yourself.
So, uh, I will take Timothy Chalamet.
I think he is funny and I think he gets, I think that, um, he doesn't take himself too seriously when it comes to things like award shows.
Like he can, he gets the joke.

Well, it's a movie based on a musical, based on a book, based on another book with a bunch of books.

Because I have a low key love for the Wizard of Oz, watched as a kid.
I know how much that movie, the play, means to my family and to my friends.
And I have not watched it because I said I would watch Wicked and Wicked for Good together, but that's also an investment of like six hours.
And I need that time to sit down on a Saturday morning start, grab some more water, Calvin, and invest, but Wicked, take it, take it.
Okay, okay, and then one more quick movie, or show, Slow Horses.

Today it is the smoking in the boys room edition.

The headline reads China mall installs glass windows on men's toilet doors that turn transparent when users smoke.
A shopping center in Southern China has installed special glass on the doors of men's toilets cubicle men's toilet cubicles that become transparent when people smoke inside winning applause online.
So you go in there.
I'm looking at this right now.
There is a there is a

So you go in there are there are windows.
They are frosted over for privacy, but the moment you light up a cigarette
They go clear so you can not only see the person smoking, but just then see them going to the bathrooms, which I guess is what we all want in the world.
But the glass uses special technology that is normally opaque and cuts off the power in a few seconds after detect smoke, making the glass transparent.
The shopping centers ensure that the bathroom users are aware of the function with a notice on the door that says, this glass will turn transparent if you smoke.
It doesn't get much more transparent than that.
Hold your urge to smoke if you don't want to become famous online.

I can't imagine smoking being that important where you risk doing that.
But Calvin, what do you thought, I mean, I don't smoke anymore and I've been able to not have to smoke in a bathroom, but I feel like this is, I don't wanna say fun, but interesting.
Yeah, I mean, it is interesting.
I feel like cigarette culture in America has kind of,
been eliminated.
There's still lots of people that chew tobacco or vape, but I feel like eliminating smoking cigarettes in restaurants and stuff has really done away with this kind of thing.
So I don't know what the cultural significance of cigarettes are in China.
I believe it's big.
I think the smoking is huge there.
I was going to say like,
This is obviously not an accurate representation of the culture, but I've been playing the Yakuza video game series and It's Japanese obviously and almost every single character smokes cigarettes So
Take that as you will with a grain of salt, probably.

According to a very quick AI overview, over 300 million people in China smoke where over half adult male smoke though rates are declining slightly overall.
But here's the question I have.
Smoking, yeah.
Don't smoke in the bathroom.
Don't smoke indoors.
Just be mindful.

Go outside, do your thing.

Does the same thing happen when you vape?
Because that's the problem.
People vaping indoors.
