Busy show coming up for you today.
Dan Schaefer will be here.
It's Friday, so Dan will be here to help us recombobulate.
He's also Civic Media's political editor.
In hour number two for Audio Sorbet, we're going to try something.
Okay.
Tomorrow is doors open Milwaukee, which is a great event if you've never done it a lot of businesses and a lot of other institutions Buildings that you normally can't get into.
Yeah Tomorrow you can yeah, so
we
started talking around But before the show about if you can get into any building in the United States Which building would it be you get the keys to them for one day for one day and you can go
in the basement and you can go nose around.
And if you had the opportunity to get inside any building in the country, which building would it be?
That's our audio sorbet question for you.
You can text it in now if you're not going to be able to join us later.
And then we'll wrap up the show as we always do.
This shouldn't be a thing.
Today is the mayo-nazing edition.
Stay tuned for that.
One of us start off with this because we've talked a lot about farmers and Wisconsin farmers.
Darren Van Ruden, who is the president of the Wisconsin Soybean Growers Association.
Darren Van Ruden.
Darren Van Ruden.
I'm sorry, Darren.
It's so tough when you have a Derek Van Horten and Darren Van
Ruden.
Yeah, it's just, it's so
anyway.
Only one of them I really want to talk to.
Darren.
Darren.
We'll be here next Wednesday.
And I'm looking forward to talking to him about this.
But this came up yesterday.
Donald Trump suggests farmer bailout will be coming
from tariff money.
Wait a minute, is this 2018 all over again, Jane?
It certainly seems like that, because the last time Donald Trump did this to our farmers, he had to bail them out with, what, $200 million?
No, no, it was 12, it was started as 12, it
ballooned up to $16 billion.
And that only covered about half their losses.
I mean, it just, and yeah, it doesn't, it...
Yeah, and he thinks he's doing the world a favor He thinks he's doing the farmers a favor by bailing them out with and by the way the tariff money isn't guaranteed So if he says we're gonna give you money Will they either be will give you money no matter what or only if the tariff money comes rolling in because now the tariffs are so aggressive and almost comic book villainy That it seems like you're not gonna get as much as you say even though you're slapping
100% tariffs on
everything.
So yeah, this, we've talked to Darren about this.
We've talked to Hans Brighton Moser about this.
And yeah, money is good, but they just want to work and do their job and be able to get the things done.
I don't know, maybe throw in a, throw in a bailout and a free farm bill while we're
at it.
Well, which by the way, still has not passed.
Correct.
The farm bill is still languishing.
two years overdue.
Yeah, two years late, the Farm Bill would really help our farmers a whole lot, but we can't seem to get anything done on that.
Here is the president.
Yesterday, Calvin, we have that clip, please, from Donald Trump talking about his great idea to help our farmers.
We want to take our money.
We're doing well because of tariffs.
We're doing unbelievable.
We're making more money than we ever have made.
And by the way, we're going to take some of that tariff money that we made just to get off the subject for a second.
We're going to take some of that tariff money that we made.
We're going to give it to our farmers who are for a little while going to be hurt until it kicks in.
Tariffs kick into their benefit.
So we're going to make sure that our farmers are in great shape because we're taking in a lot of money.
So we're so rich for a little while.
Two years of pain, Greg.
Well,
just two years of pain.
I mean, if there's a farmer out there listening, have you been through two years of pain or has it been 20 years or 20 generations?
I mean, this country's not been good to our farmers from both sides of the aisles, I will say
for many years.
But this is patronizing to the point of.
I want to say laughable like once again, if it was a movie, I'd laugh at this, but it's real life.
And yes, some of those farmers will enjoy the money they get.
I'm sure all of them will enjoy the money they get.
They can use it for what they need, especially since this country was cutting off contracts with them for funding to buy equipment and maintenance and upgrade their farms.
But, you know, we'll see what happens.
We'll see, you know, the country isn't this government's in the in the in the game of bailing out, I guess now.
And
Brendan on the live stream says isn't this socialism sounds close to it.
I mean kind of socialistic
But I keep thinking about that farmer in Arkansas was it Arkansas was Missouri that young man who went viral and then we spoke to Will Westmoreland about it and because he wasn't because he had one of it he had a contract cut off from the Trump administration after he'd purchased all of his equipment invested all of this money and Then he had nothing well.
He got the money
Eventually, cause that's what happens.
Well, if you can become viral enough and get the
attention of the administration, then they might do something.
And then once he gets the money, they're like, oh, okay, I'm fine with this now again.
So that's, I don't, and maybe that's a conversation with Darren too, is to say, look, I understand that farmers want to do their job.
And I understand some of the farmers voted for Donald Trump.
Some of them didn't.
But what I want to, I want to understand is, can they keep it in front of mine to say, oh, this is,
We're used to getting the shaft from this government, but this is even worse and we're seeing it again like this happened in 2018 and 2019 during his first administration So they're just gonna do it again because he just says I'm gonna give money to the farmers I'm wondering did anyone in that room on his staff know he was going to say that because he said specifically I'm gonna get off topic for a moment, which is the first time I think he's ever said it out loud
that he's going to go off topic, but he just sort of said it.
So I'm wondering if anyone in the room knew that was happening.
Cause if they didn't, this is a massive commitment.
Well, Brooke Rollins, who is the agriculture secretary
has been,
she's been dancing in the last couple of days because they're hearing from our farmers who if, if you take a look around, you can listen to Maggie Dawn's show from yesterday.
She was at a local farm in Wisconsin.
All kinds of stories about the struggles that our farmers are going through.
And what I just find so ironic about this, again, Trump is the one who did this to our farmers by imposing these tariffs.
And now we're all paying for it.
We're all paying higher prices because of these tariffs, including our farmers.
So essentially, the farmers are paying themselves back.
Essentially,
yeah.
Yeah.
Right?
Yes.
It's kind of a circular.
It's an
oral course.
It's a circular.
A circular payment system or a Boris.
It's a snake eating its own tail and As mentioned before Yes, they will probably utilize and when I say enjoy I don't mean like happily enjoy I mean in the most I mean most Prussian version They will enjoy the money they have and they will use it to for what they need But really when it comes down to it and this goes this goes out to everyone in that in in Washington on Capitol Hill what the farmers need
are partners in good investments in their work because, as they say, every time they go near a podium, the farmers are the backbone of this country.
And then they continually screw them.
Yeah.
Also,
just to kind of tag onto this.
Oh, I'm fired up.
It's Friday.
We are giving Argentina $20 billion.
Argentina.
Because, I'm sorry, sorry.
Por qué?
Because Trump likes Malaley in Argentina.
Oh, you mean, oh.
And so we're gonna buy their bonds, I believe.
Ron Filipowski on Twitter said this yesterday, we are bailing out Argentina while Argentina's farmers sell soybeans to China in the place of American farmers.
That's putting them out of business.
So now we have to bail out American farmers while farmers in Argentina make bank.
So he's bailing
out two sets of farmers, essentially.
I should say they're investing, they're giving.
So, two things.
One, this is on top of the fact that Donald Trump, and we talked about this story before, and I found an egg web, which is a great app on farming news, was begging China to up their soybean game with us here in America because it has been decimated since his first term.
Also, what happened to America first?
What happened to cutting foreign aid?
What about us?
What about it's all about America?
We got to put us forward now Argentina gets 20 billion dollars of our money Cuz he likes him boy.
Oh, howdy does he
John from West Bend texting in and the farmers voted for him again?
Yes, I think they did 8 5 5 7 5 2 4 8 4 2 if you would like to join the conversation stay close You are listening to Matt Nair on air.
This is the civic media radio network and we will be right back
Good morning.
Welcome.

Join us.
Call or text at 855-752-4842.
You can leave a comment.
If you're watching on the live stream, good morning, live stream.
Hi, live stream.
On Facebook, YouTube, and what used to be Twitter, seat, S-E-A-T, seat, is the word you wanna text in right now via the Civic Media app for our multi-state text to win, go for the green and gold contest.
We have all next week that we're going to do this too.
So you have many, many, many chances to win our daily prize, 200 bucks in cash and gold jewelry, the grand prize, two club level indoor seats to see Green Bay and Minnesota November 23rd at noon with a gas card to get you there and back.
My goodness.
Seat is the word Kevin from Omro texted and earned.
Kevin like earn is in like you got to earn your living or dead people Yes, it earn is not the word Kevin try again.
Okay seat SEAT seat is the word to get you in the running for our Go for the green and gold multi-state text-to-win contest seat SEAT Your next chance is gonna be with Tom Hartman in the 11 and one o'clock hours in the three o'clock hour with Todd five o'clock with Maggie Dawn
Pete Schwabba, nightlight, wrapping it up tonight at seven o'clock.
Seat is the word.
Text it in on the app and good luck.
Before we went to the break, we were talking about Donald Trump, not feet.
Ben, try again.
Spelling counts.
Okay.
It's type, type, slower.
All right.
I have fat fingers when I text.
No you don't.
Seat.
SEAT is the word.
Before we went to the break, we were talking about Donald Trump announcing yesterday that we're going to use tariff money to bail out the farmers who are suffering because of the tariffs, essentially.
Yeah, it's terrific.
Yeah, just terrific.
Yeah, we were talking about that.
We were, you know, we're going to talk to most likely Darren Von Ruden about this.
I cannot give it.
Darren Von Ruden.
See, you did this to me.
I'm not.
I'm
sorry.
This is
your fault.
We're going to speak to Darren Von Ruden, who is the president of the Wisconsin Farmers Union next week.
I'm sure we'll be talking about this matter to really understand
How what farmers attitudes will be towards a bailout?
Yes, there will be some relief that will come if this happens at all by the way This is not for sure.
This is not he has simply said he said on a live event
right
that we're gonna give some of this money away to Farmers from the terrace because we're making more money than we've ever made We're winning till the cows come home for the farmers that's a pun for farmers, but what I wanted to bring up is
If you go to civicmedia.us slash shows, look for Maggie show.
I'm at the Maggie Don show.
Yesterday she came, she went to the, the Rezinger, Rezinger family farm in spring green and talked to a bunch of individuals about what's going on.
And, and, and there's a lot of emotion in their discussion because there's a lot of emotion in farming in this country.
And so if you go to civicmedia.us slash shows, look for that.
You can download both.
Episodes both hours and listen to them any time you want.
It's really great.
It check it out
I would really suggest you
listen to
that and also and you brought this up Jane and I believe it was someone on the on the text line brought it up as well John from West Bend said he's listening on WA UK He said and the farmers voted for him to get again, and if you want an insight Into why this is there's a wonderful book.
I read it in college
by Thomas Frank called, what's the matter with Kansas?
And it's basically, what's the matter with Kansas?
How conservatives won the heart of America?
And it's about messaging and getting out there and making them forget their greater needs in place of patriotism and fear.
So what's the matter with Kansas as the book?
If you want just a small insight into why this, but this book was written in 2004.
So things have very much changed, but
that message still
resonates in the quote,
Heartland where we live.
Yeah, you go drive 20 minutes from Racine due west You're gonna see nothing but farmland you will see Trump signs and every time I see it I think the same thing I I want to knock on the door and say politely Why tell me why this is what is it about him that makes you feel better about?
This country and and I listen.
I'm not gonna try to change their mind I truly want to know but what's the matter with Kansas is a great book great insight into why this is the case
you can find it everywhere.
And we'll include this in the show notes in case you're driving in the car or something and you can't write it down right now.
Yeah.
And this just Chuck Grassley, of course, the 9000 year old Republican from Iowa, who is a farmer in Iowa, he's shrieking now about the fact that we are helping out Argentina.
We're going to give them 20 billion dollars.
We're going to loan them 20 billion dollars.
Because Trump likes Millie Lee, who runs Argentina.
And Chuck Grassley said, why is the U.S.
helping bail out Argentina while they take American soybean producers' biggest market?
We should use leverage at every turn to help our herding farm economy.
Family farmers should be top of mind in negotiations
by the USA.
So essentially, China is now buying soybeans from Argentina to avoid the tariffs in America.
And Argentina just suspended their tariffs.
So China gets a better deal.
So we are undercutting our own farmers with this deal that we're giving to Argentina.
Jane, we're winning.
I don't know if you know this.
We're making more money than we've ever made in the history.
I'm confused about
What that went winning apparently
maybe if we you know what I never thought about this before what if we all as Society just sucked up to Trump enough where he just said I'll give them free health care What if we're doing this wrong we don't have enough money Yeah, but if we like them all enough it
may be the amount of people No, no, no, but the flattery will always be second to cash
A close second.
Everyone bring a dollar.
Yeah, we'll all chip in.
We have news coming up next, and then when we return, bathroom remodel?
I love to.
On your list?
Love it.
Get it done by next Wednesday.
Why?
We'll have all the details coming up.
Stay close.
You are listening to Matt Nair on air on the vast statewide, countrywide.
You can pick us up around the globe, and even in St.
Paul.
On the Civic Media Radio Network.
We'll be right back.
Good morning and welcome back to Matt Nair on air Jane Matt Nair Greg Bach our one our only calzone on the board coming to you from our studio at Radio Park in Racine where you can always join us call or text at 855-752-4842 leave a comment if you're watching on the live stream on Facebook YouTube and what used to be Twitter before the break we were talking about now we're gonna help
Argentina with $20 billion while they are selling soybeans to China and not buying them from US farmers.
Jack from Miramac texting in $20 billion for Argentina, billions more for farmers.
I thought the tariffs every American is paying were supposed to pay for the trillions in tax welfare gifted to the 1% and rich corporations.
Instead, we're paying Argentina first and now we're using socialist subsidies.
for our farmers.
Kind of seems like that.
Yep.
Hey, guys, do you support this guy in the White House?
Please call in and tell us why, because it doesn't seem like he's has our best interest in mind.
855-752-4842.
You know what, Jane?
I wish the president liked us as much as he liked Argentina.
He sure seems to have a soft spot for Argentina.
Absolutely.
He really does.
Hey, we have a soft spot for fabulous contest.
Okay, not the most elegant transition, perhaps.
Oh, man.
It's our multi-state text to win.
Go for the green and gold contest, Greg Bach.
I've heard of this.
And you have until 10 o'clock to open up your phone, open up the Civic Media app and text in the word seat, S-E-A-T.
Text in the word seat.
And you are in the running for our daily prize two under bucks in cash and gold jewelry And then you're in the running for the incredible grand prize a pair of club level indoor indoor seats to see Green Bay and Minnesota November 23rd at noon with a gas card to get you there and back so text in the word seat SEAT you have until 10 o'clock
And then your next chance coming up with Tom Hartman, 11 o'clock, one o'clock, with Todd at three, Maggie at five, Beach Swabba wrapping it up at seven o'clock, all kinds of chances to enter.
And this contest will go through all of next week as well.
Good luck.
Yeah, good luck.
And if you win and you go to that game in Green Bay, take pictures and you can send those pictures to us via the Civic Media app.
I'm telling you, people, it's multi-purpose.
Speaking of...
You're going to the brewers game tonight.
I am.
I'm going, Jane.
It's not technically brunch, but I'm just going to use it for the bee, for the bee alliteration, brunch, boat, brewers and my friend, Ben.
Oh, that's sweet.
And my friend Nicole too.
Like she's going to, but she, you know, it doesn't work with the bees.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's honestly, I'm very excited.
I got a bunch of work done.
I'm going to be able to enjoy the rest of the
day.
I'm so glad.
I
don't get out like this often.
I know.
I'm usually like,
hey, let's just stay home and watch
Ted Lasso for a night time.
This is a
big
day for you.
I
know.
I'm getting out like a big boy.
We want to see pictures.
All right.
Greg, we'll take pictures and we'll put them up on our socials after tonight's.
Oh, cool.
Thank you,
Jay.
After tonight's Brewer's Game, when they take on Cincinnati, our broadcast starts at 6.35.
Last weekend of regular play.
Yeah.
We can walk away with the best record in baseball this weekend.
And that would be a historic for the Brewers too, if they do that, right?
Yeah.
Go crew.
Go crew.
Go crew.
Gene from Eau Claire is on the line.
Good morning, Gene.
Thank you for joining us.
What did you want to say?
Well, good morning.
Great show, guys.
You know, I think I'm hallucinating today.
Whoa.
You know, I think my ears aren't working correctly.
You know.
President have his own checkbook that he can take taxpayers dollars and we'll throw a little here.
We're gonna get a ballroom and yeah, we're gonna do all these lawsuits that we gotta pay for oh my gosh, you know we Well, we gotta get those homeless people off the street.
Come out.
Come on.
Oh All the ice people they get left in money for each person they pick up holy mo
I'm just wondering if I'm living in La La Land.
I cannot believe this.
Oh, and then Mr. Grassley.
Holy s**t. He just praises that guy or maybe he needs a stronger hearing aid.
You know that he didn't know this was going to happen.
I'll tell you something.
I watch these people and they just go along with everything.
I think they just sit there like a bump on a log and don't even do the work.
I hope we get all new people in there.
The people that
with the R after their name.
I see the people with the D after their name working hard every day trying to work for the people and then they're going to get blamed if they shut down.
Oh my gosh, what a twisted world we live in.
You guys have a great weekend.
And thanks for giving information.
Absolutely, Gene.
Thank you so
much.
Really appreciate you checking in.
Actually, Gene brings up something really important.
This might not be a bad opportunity for us to contact some of our lawmakers.
And how am I going to do that?
I got so much going on.
I'm downloading the Free Civic Media app.
I'm going to baseball games, having a drink and a boat.
It's all in one place for you, Greg.
OK.
Myvote.wi.gov.
That sounds like a...
website.
It is my vote.wi.gov.
All you have to do is type in your address.
All of your elected representatives will appear, including their contact information.
Correct.
So, you know, and we've talked to enough lawmakers.
This does make a difference.
Yes.
If there is enough response.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So don't think it doesn't matter.
And please be polite.
We always we always ask you that because
a lot.
The person answering the phone is not the person with the power.
And I will say this too, if you're at my vote.wi.gov, also check to make sure your voting registration information is correct, updated and up to speed because they just did some maintenance on the voter rolls this year.
If people, I'm keeping it.
This is a conspiracy folks.
If you've moved, if you don't update it, they throw you off.
That's what happens.
So if, you know, if you just haven't voted in a while, first of all, come on, man.
Second,
Just make sure all your voter registration information is correct by going to myvote.wi.gov.
It's a great site, not just for contacting your representatives, but finding out about your voter registration, where you vote, when the ballots are available.
You can request an absentee ballot through them.
You can also see what's on your ballot
so
you can make informed decisions because sometimes those questions are real confusing.
So
myvote.wi.gov, I swear I should just get a tattooed on my forehead.
That would be a
new I'm not doing it.
Nope.
Not doing
I'm not on the forehead on the forehead.
I'll
do it on the five head because it goes up high
You may also want to Contact them about this what's up because the president just announced this last night Imports a pharmaceutical products.
Yeah, if branded or patented a hundred percent tariff
Trump also says the US is now is in point is imposing a 25% tariff on big trucks and Like what huh on big trucks heavy trucks and 50% tariffs on all kitchen cabinets bathroom vanities and Associated products and these kick in next Wednesday
What is going on
he has complete authority to do anything
This doesn't sound like a dictator at all.
No, not at all.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So if you were planning on remodeling your bathroom, do it now.
Get your order in today on those kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities.
My husband and I did this earlier in the year.
And even before all of this, it took us three months to get these things.
And also, I guess get all your meds from America too.
Well, and of course there are all these caveats in there where these tariffs won't apply if they are promising to manufacture here or start manufacturing here, but It just it just kind of came out of nowhere last night.
Yeah,
it's like he takes a nap and he dreams about it and then he wakes up and he tweets it
Honestly, I was thinking the exact same thing like is are these just fever dream statements?
I
know what I'll do.
This will be great.
Yeah, I mean
There is a great website and we had James van der Luan.
They gave us their website and I'll try to find that.
But for right now, a trade compliance resource hub, all one word.com, you can find something called the Trump tariff tracker.
And that will give you all of the tariffs that are either being threatened.
They use the word threatened, by the way, not me.
I'm not saying that word.
This is what the website threatened, implemented.
There's other ones to exempt, but it gives you a rundown of all the, the tariffs cause there are
so many
happening.
I cannot keep up.
So well,
it was supposed to be 90 deals at 90 days.
Well,
it was all supposed to be end of war day one,
but you know,
Hey,
Oh yeah.
Apparently nine months
later,
that's going well.
Apparently consequences are nothing for them.
But yeah, trade compliance resource hub.com.
I'll put that in the webs and the, in the show notes for today.
But yeah, you can, it makes
keeping up easier.
In 2024, this is from npr.org.
America imported over $200 billion in pharmaceutical and medicinal products.
The prospect of prices doubling for some medicines could send shockwaves to voters as health care costs, including the costs of Medicare and Medicaid, potentially increase.
I'm going to tie this a little bit to
the budget and the potential of the government shutting down.
Just a reminder that the Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House.
They don't have enough votes among their own party to pass this measure.
This, this CV.
CR.
That too.
So they need a couple of Democrats to do it.
And the Democrats are like, unless you make some concessions,
To continue the subsidies for the Affordable Care Act, we're not signing off on this.
That's what the Democrats are standing on.
Yeah.
And they're going to blame the Democrats when the government shuts down.
Absolutely.
That's what they do.
They never take responsibility.
They're not the party of personal responsibility.
They push that narrative for decades.
They're not the party of personal responsibility.
Never have been.
They're already blaming the Democrats.
I guarantee you, right now, an elected official from Washington is sitting on some talk show saying that if we could just get the Democrats on board, no, get your own party on board.
Every time the government shuts down, it looks bad for them.
When Obama was president and the government shut down, it looked awful for them.
Now he's gone and you got Trump there, you're in charge.
I'll throw the Supreme Court in there.
You've got everything.
and you still can't get it done.
I just really hope, hope against hope, that maybe some of you who voted for this guy will say, well, maybe okay.
I was lied to.
Yeah.
I was lied to
but no they're gonna be able to easily blame the Democrats because it's always the Democrats fault and then Chuck Schumer will be standing in the back with a strongly worded letter
going
where you need to do something about this right now because I'm a hundred I'm a rich and I don't care
the new tariffs on cabinetry will further increase the cost for home builders yep at a time when many people who want to buy a house are kind of priced out because of the housing shortage and high mortgage rates National Association of Realtors say there are signs of price pressures easing
But still, they say the median price for an existing home is $400,000.
Maybe in some parts of the country, I have to think around here, it's closer to three.
I don't believe it.
I don't think nationwide it's 400 plus thousand.
That just doesn't make sense to me.
But the price of lumber, the price of building supplies are always already going up since COVID.
I mean,
two by four is like tripled in price.
I was gonna say, because we have tariffs against Canada importing lumber.
And so that is kind of ground our housing.
Industry to
all I mean once again folks on the folks listening who voted for Donald Trump Tell me how we're winning.
Tell me how this is making us win 8
5 5 7 5 2 4 8 4 2 that's 8 5 5 7 5 civic talking about tariffs Again, if you were planning a bathroom remodel you may want to get to Home Depot this weekend and pick something out and order it before next Wednesday.
Yeah when the
New tariffs kick in on bathroom and kitchen cabinets bathroom vanities 30% tariffs on upholstered furniture and 25% on heavy trucks starting on October 1st
and Here's also the just the grim reality of it all These prices will never come down even if tariffs go away because once they go up they stay up because people will pay

escalator gate, which we really didn't get a lot.
We didn't get around to in the last couple days.
Again, there is so much going on and so much happening.
And we kind of have to look at what really takes priority.
And you would think that this was the worst thing that happened in the world if you watched Fox.
Well, and I want to make something very clear.
We've said this before many times.
We said it this week as well.
There are things that come out of the Trump White House that come out the Trump mouth.
that are squirrels, that are distractions, that are built to distract you from important things like the big bill for billionaires, the Epstein files, and that's the two big ones in my opinion.
The reason why I wanted to talk about this has less to do with the actual event and more of the aftermath.
Now, granted,
A day and a half ago, he wasn't calling for the prosecution of those who are part of this apparent sabotage of the president's escalator and his teleprompter.
That got, I mean, it got out of hand quickly, but not off brand, not off brand.
This for me had to do more with reaction from the press.
And I want to just paint a picture here.
Three weeks ago, Charlie Kirk was murdered in cold blood, undeservedly, horrifically.
And I stand against it as we all do.
And frankly, I'm tired of having to say that out loud.
You should just know I don't believe in political violence.
But after the escalator thing, Jesse Waters, who, by the way, is not a comedic figure on Fox News, he is a pundit, an anchor, and the lead guy.
He is now in the Tucker Carlson slash Willow Riley spot.
So this is not about funny.
This is about having an actual opinion on this.
Calvin, can you play the clip?
of Jesse Waters' solution to what happened at the UN this week.
What's going on with the escalator?
What do you think?
Yeah, they sabotaged them.
Yeah.
And they could have hurt the first lady.
Yeah.
Trump would have fallen and would have gotten back up.
But, you know, the first... They would have
blamed it on his rhetoric.
And then they sabotaged the teleprompter.
Yeah.
I mean, this is an insurrection.
And what we need to do is either leave the UN,
or we need to bomb it.
It is in New York though, right?
Could be some fallout
there.
All
right.
Didn't have to apologize.
Oh, they never apologized.
Didn't have to apologize.
Didn't get fired.
Nothing happened to him.
And he was sitting here listening to people on the right, trying to fire individuals.
for speaking their minds on Charlie.
Now, if they're speaking their minds and saying that Mr. Kirk deserve what he got, then that's a different conversation.
But when people are just speaking their truth, their hearts on the topic of that man and what they feel like he did to them and getting fired from their jobs because of pressure from the outside world through social media, that's wrong.
But the fact that Jesse Waters gets to make that statement on television, that is nothing happens.
That is.
political violence at its core.
It is revenge tactics.
He throws in a real slight 9-11 joke in there as well.
And nothing happens.
So I'm sick and tired of listening to people tell me that the intolerant left is the intolerant left.
When you got people like him sitting there on a TV show getting paid millions of dollars to make a crack like that.
And there are no consequences.
Yet I'm afraid to say anything even speaking my heart.
Because I'm afraid someone will come up from the Woodward said you should be fired.
This is ridiculous.
Well, and the other thing was From reports that I have seen over the last couple of days The person who triggered the stop on that escalator was actually a cameraman for the Trump administration And it's also my understanding that it was a member of the Trump administration who was running the teleprompter So it wasn't sabotage.
It wasn't trying to take him down.
No, this was operator error
Mm-hmm
by mistake.
Yeah by their own people
Yeah, these are mistakes made by human beings and I you know, I'm not gonna make fun of them for being on the Trump side I'm just gonna say these are mistakes made by human people They'll have to deal with the consequences whatever or they won't cuz consequences are hilariously adorable Well, they're only for some but I cannot stop thinking about this man making that statement saying those things
About a building full of people who's made their life's work to try to make it a more peaceful place on this planet He says that and nothing happens yet some guy in some guy in New York Makes a comment on social media and he loses his job.
Are you kidding me?
Don't come at me with I have to be respectful I am respectful not because you tell me to but because I am you start being respectful
Sorry,
I

Alive.
It's at Radio Park and Racine.
It's
really been nice having you come into studio.
I really, having people come into studio period is wonderful.
Yeah.
far less technical hiccups can happen,
but I feel like
the energy is always better when you just have everyone, everyone vibing like jazz.
It's like, it's like the stories we don't talk about.
That's what you got to talk about.
Sure, Greg.
Yes, I had,
I had coffee.
Let's talk about the recombination area.
Let's talk about.
Tom Tiffany.
We'll talk about Tom Tiffany.
We'll talk about a really a wild week in the Republican primary for governor.
There's a lot to get into there.
But I think the headline of the week in Wisconsin politics is that Tom Tiffany, the seventh district congressman.
has made it official.
He is running for governor,
which isn't a surprise.
Not a surprise.
Well, he's been shaking hands at state fair and all over the place.
Can
I ask a question though about timeline?
If I'm not mistaken, wasn't there supposed to be an announcement?
Like there was a big thing about Wednesday, but he announced on Tuesday.
So they had an event Wednesday, like the actual, like he had an event in Wausau at this facility or whatever.
But like he broke the news on Tuesday afternoon.
Got you.
All right.
All right, gotcha, okay.
Man, I wish we could have gotten that exclusive.
Next time, next time.
And you feel that he's going to be the front
runner.
I
do.
Well, he's got the name right.
Well, I think
he walks into this race as the front runner for a couple of reasons.
And I do think he is going to be the eventual Republican nominee for governor.
I think he is a Trump endorsement and a strong fundraising quarter away from being from clearing the field, I think, really.
Well, but Tony Weed has endorsed him, which is like being Trump adjacent because he hasn't gotten Trump's endorsement
yet.
He will.
It's like the transitive property of endorsements.
Trump endorsed weed, weed endorsed Tiffany.
It's the six degrees of Kevin Bacon, only just sad.
Yes,
exactly sad six degrees of Kevin Bacon aside here Tom Tiffany You know, I think part of it too is just the fact that this is a pretty lackluster field for
the
Republicans and I think you know, we talked about it back when I had my column about about Tony Evers I think the Democratic bench is a strong one I think there are a lot of good candidates who have already announced many who are considering announcing whatever but I think on the Republican side like there's not a strong candidate who has put themselves forward, you know
Shoman was the first, uh, first out of the gate he announced in May.
I think it's significant that he has not picked up a single endorsement from anyone in the state legislature, any significant Republican names.
Like, you know, Tiffany announces this week, he gets the endorsement of the college Republicans endorsement from, from Tony weed.
Like at least there's something, you
know,
like I know how these campaigns work.
They want to play up the endorsement, make it a story,
do it, all of
those different
kinds of
things.
You know, showman's been on the road for.
what almost six months now, uh, campaigning in this and he hasn't picked up any significant endorsements at all.
Uh, you know, so young guy working hard, whatever.
I don't think he has a particularly strong record to run on.
He hasn't picked up a lot of support.
I think there's a reason people were looking for somebody else to announce.
And I think also they don't write, they don't write about him unless they're writing about the whole field and the whole can't, the whole race.
He's not done anything that's really brought the news.
to him.
Right.
He hasn't put out some sort of like bold agenda for Wisconsin or anything like that.
He's just like, Hey, I'm a younger guy and had, have had this job in Washington County and here I am.
For
him, like, you know, putting your head into the ring and running into statewide race takes a lot.
But, you know, he hasn't really picked up steam.
He got his name out there is what it is.
I don't think he's going to be the nominee.
Todd, all by had a chance to talk to him when, when he was traveling around the state.
And Todd, at least from his perspective, thought that he was a pretty
strong candidate.
But again, he lacks the name recognition.
He doesn't have much of a record to run on, although that brings me to my question.
What is Tom Timothy Tiffany's fabulous record that he's going to run on that he stood next to the Blotnik bridge with the infrastructure repair bill that was passed by Joe Biden that he didn't vote for?
I mean, what does what does he have to come forward and say, look what I did for you, Wisconsin?
He likes Trump done.
That's all he
needs.
He's a strong.
Trump ally, you know, he's been elected as a Congressman three times.
He was in the state Senate for a while before that assembly briefly before that.
So he has, you know, strong ties to state government.
He understands how the process
works.
Yeah, he's been there a long time.
He should have a record of accomplishments.
Exactly.
Well, and I think, you know, I mentioned this when I was talking to Todd yesterday as well.
He authored a bill that was, you know, kind of like stripping some environmental regulations when they were talking about putting a mine in Northern Wisconsin.
He was one of the, you know, kind of the lead legislators behind some.
those efforts, I think there are a number of things on education in Wisconsin from the Walker era that he was very much a part of that will be scrutinized.
He went further than any Wisconsin congressman did in 2020 to try to overturn the election results.
Tiffany's case, to be governor, it is not a crossover appeal candidate.
It is not a moderate, bring
people together to the center.
It is an activate the base.
It is the play to try to get as many people who voted for Donald Trump in 2024 to come out and vote for Tom Tiffany in 2026.
That's the play for him.
I think there's like this whole, you know, geographic shift occurring if he were to be the nominee too, because the stronghold in Wisconsin for Republicans for so long was the Wildcannies.
The three, you know, deep red counties around Milwaukee that have becoming much more purple over the last decade.
And I think it is interesting to think about how.
you know, okay, Josh, Josh Showman coming from walk Washington County.
We've had other Brad Schimmel was from from Waukesha County.
We've had a lot of Scott Walker from from that area too.
And so I think we've had a lot of Republicans from that area that who have lost.
And I think this is a sign that that the center of power for Republican politics in Wisconsin is moving away from the suburbs and is becoming a more of a rural much more than Northwood's party.
If you're just joining us on Matt and Aaron, we're speaking to Pacific Media's political editor and founder of the Reconpopulation Area, Mr. Dan Schaefer.
And we're talking about his newest article in the Reconpopulation Area talking about the candidacy of one Tom Tiffany, who is running for governor of Wisconsin as a GOP candidate in 2026.
And there's two things for me.
If I'm a campaigner, if I'm if I'm on the left,
I'm going to simply say whether he was in the state house or Capitol Hill, Tom Tiffany has never had Wisconsin in mind for his voting record shows that.
But also the question I have is, you know, he's trying to push the narrative now.
Like he's un-farm gear.
He's next to Kyle.
He's
using-
I know how
to shovel a barn.
He's using manure puns to point out the badness of everybody else.
I just-
I
didn't mind that, actually.
But the thing is, it's like, you know, yes.
Wisconsin voted for Trump in 2024 and 2016 he lost in 2020 and But the two major most major races in Wisconsin both for states Supreme Court Showed a different Wisconsin on the
face like it really like it
was a definite switch and and the thing is it'd be one thing if it was Trump and then nothing but blue But it was Trump blue Trump blue and so my question is
Will Wisconsin stand up the same way they did in in this year or in 2022 or will it be 2016 and 2020 or 2024 because I feel like when it's Wisconsin state race The minds are different there.
There's a
different consideration to the candidate themselves and I feel like Tom Tiffany because he doesn't have a ton of charisma in my opinion and he doesn't come with a lot of
Record he's gonna have to push the Trump narrative
and
that may push people away
well again if economically Things continue the way they are
tying yourself to Trump may not be the big win that everybody thinks it is.
It may not be.
And, you know, he was he was a vote in favor of the, you know, one big beautiful bill.
Of course he was.
He
slashed the safety net in this country in many ways while increasing spending.
Don't get a lot of bills that do both of those things.
And also, I think it is really interesting that the, you know, so Democratic Party of Wisconsin already put out an attack ad on Tiffany.
And the focus of that attack ad was the issue of tariffs.
There's a lot of different things you could go at Tom Tiffany on.
You could go on abortion rights, you could go on various different economic issues, what have you.
They went with tariffs.
And I think that's interesting.
And I think tariffs is going to be, I think we're going to see a lot of different candidates have that focus in the midterms, because I think, you know, that is one of those things that people looked to Trump as, you know, okay, let's go back to the, you know, pre 2020, before inflation, before this will get costs down, whatever.
The tariffs have not done that.
They have not made prices go down in any way.
Prices are continuing to go up.
Tariffs are hurting our economy in Wisconsin.
You guys talked about it earlier in the show.
with soybeans and the issue with farmers there, actually Rebecca Cook put out a press release saying that soybeans should be exempted from tariffs, which I thought was pretty interesting this week.
But I think the fact that they have focused on tariffs as the issue, and Marquette University did some polling earlier this year on tariffs in Wisconsin, only about 30% of Wisconsin voters say that tariffs help the economy.
And so I
think you're going to see
this be an issue in the midterms for Democrats saying like, the tariffs are bad for the economy.
It's a pretty simple case to be made.
Like we can all see what's happening in front of us right now.
I'm, you know, I guess I'm glad it did some Kitchener modeling before this happened.
But
you know, I think that is going to be, and I saw some of the, you know, outside special interest groups like do lists of like these are the things that are wrong with Tom Tiffany.
Tariffs was near the top of the list for that too.
And I think tariffs is going to emerge as a.
a major attack ad spot for Wisconsin Democrats in the midterms.
I would also just like to remind folks that Tom Tiffany, when they talked about turning the Apostle Islands into a national park, that's because he wants to mine one of the islands.
That's why.
It's not because he's such an environmentalist.
There is nothing to do with that.
It's about, yeah, let's strip mine it, come on.
Let me I want to ask you both a quote was there there's a text Yeah, yeah good Jake in Madison listening on WXCO.
Why be high-minded?
Tom Tiffany is a complete moron who has a load of tape of being a fool on Capitol Hill along with voting for every Walker policy that people hated and yes No Senate or governor race on the ballot is a big negative negative for the Wisconsin Republicans Fox will ignore the governor's race.
Thanks Jake for checking it
And that's the question.
Another Wisconsin state politics question I want to ask both of you.
I feel, and I think it's safe to say that in 2024, during the presidential election, Democrats failed to really grasp the economy as an issue that was applicable
to the people.
Absolutely.
I did as well.
I was trying to push this grander idea when I wasn't talking about kitchen table politics.
And that was my failure.
Is this a chance for Wisconsin Devin Rimmiker and the Wisconsin Democratic Party to, and putting out a statement of tariffs, that's very,
very
intentional.
Is this their chance to finally try to craft a message that talks about the economy that's A, very truthful, B, not mind-numbingly boring through explanation and detail, and C, appetizing to the voter.
All stripes.
I think you're onto something there.
Okay.
And I think that is, it would.
There's opportunity to strike a real economic message right now.
And if there's things tied to the bill, the big ugly bill, there's things tied to tariffs, there's things tied to all sorts of...
you could call it corrupt activity happening in the White House.
It's corruption, it's corruption, Palooza, come on.
Allegedly.
It's a festival of
corruption.
The scene from the inauguration with all the tech billionaire CEOs there with Trump as well, like there is an economic case to be made, an economic populism type of case to be made that I think we can and should see in the months ahead.

Coming up after the 1030 news, a segment we call Audio Sorbet, where we take a breath, enlighten things up, and get away from the news.
We clean your ears with fun!
Thank you.
Today's Audio Sorbet, since doors open in Milwaukee, is happening tomorrow, which is a great event.
Love it.
If you have never taken part, you should.
And we're going to include the link in our show notes.
But it's an opportunity if you live in Milwaukee, the Milwaukee area, to get into buildings that normally you can't get into.
If you're not skilled enough.
So our audio survey question is if you could get into any building in the country, what building would it be?
In the country.
In the country.
And I'm going to
say like, we're going to don't say Fort Knox.
Let's see you can say Fort Knox.
Okay,
fine.
I just
your thing
But then I feel like yeah, put your tin hat on you be like I gotta

Heck, if you think there's buildings on Mars.
I want to hear from
them.
Yeah, absolutely.
So join us after 10 30 for audio sorbet.
And then we end the show as we always do with this shouldn't be a thing today.
It is the mayonizing edition.
Stay tuned for that.
Before the break, we were talking about Tom Tiffany and the Republicans who are running for governor here in Wisconsin.
We don't have a lot of time left.
We didn't mention Bill Berrien at all.
We gotta mention Bill Barian
a little
bit here.
He's had a tough week,
Mr. Barian.
It's not been a
smooth week.
Not has been a great week.
So the headline early in the week was GOP Gov candidate Bill Barian scrubs links to sexually explicit social media
accounts.
A whole bunch of
them.
A whole bunch of them.
Sounds like he had an account on Medium.
He was following a number of people, including a transgender porn star who we decided during the break.
I cannot say their name
on the air.
I prefer
that you didn't.
And then the follow-up story in today's Milwaukee Journal.
from Dan Bice, Trans porn star rips GOP governor candidate Bill Berion for, quote, hypocrisy over X-rated web links.
Well, again, just to put this into context, Bill Berion is a family values guy.
That's
right.
He made
anti-trans positioning crucial to his message running for governor.
He put that in his first campaign ad.
So
was he following these accounts so he could become educated?
Doesn't seem that way.
No.
I'm trying to help out here.
You
know what?
What he does in his own time is his own business.
That's true.
You know what?
That's a very,
okay.
I will say what he does in his own time is his own business and is not, but when he is making a core message from his campaign that he is a family values Republican and he is staking out these explicitly anti-trans positions, that becomes a problem.
Then he is a hypocrite then he is deriding something that you know I don't even want to get into the whatever the rest with it, but I think you know for one Not gonna help him in a Republican primary.
No, I don't
think no
although the apologizing on his behalf on the right
is pretty astonishing.
It really is pretty amazing.
I follow some accounts on Twitter that are very far right, and they're like, I don't care who he follows in his personal time.
If this were a Democratic candidate,
it would be an entirely different matter.
An entirely different matter.
I know which account you're talking about and the words were, I will not contribute to the destruction of a person, but yet they have no problem contributing to the destruction of Dan Bice, the author of this article talking about the hypocrisy.
And you're right, that's what I was gonna say, Dan, you said it perfectly.
And there's no version of the GOP in this verse universe, I believe in the multiverse, but not in this universe.
Does there exist a GOP that could just relax it a little bit like, look,
Do what you want
in your personal
exactly you can't It would make it so much easier for them because we're always seeing them get caught red-handed and I'm not even talking about the criminal aspect of it all when they're getting busted for Horrific crimes.
I'm talking about stuff like this like dude.
Yeah, you like you like some stuff That's a little spicier go live your life But when you make it your platform that it's the devil you can't sorry you don't you're you you're not brand loyal now
Well, and it's tough when it seems like the Republican Party can't stop
inserting themselves into our personal lives, which is what they want to legislate.
And they always talk
about the, you know, we need to keep government out of people's lives.
And then in every social and cultural issue, they have to get into it into
the mix
on everything instead of just letting people live their
lives.
My goodness,
just let people be.
Yeah.
If you don't want to do that, no one's making you.
No, no one's making you.
It's so much easier.
I will say this from personal experience is so much more stress free when I don't have to.
not only worry about other people's behavior, but also worry about telling them that their behavior is wrong.
Or policing their behavior,
right?
I feel like
I sleep way better not having to worry about the decisions of adults.
But from a
political
standpoint, one last point to make here before the break, there was a story out yesterday from WBAY with the headline, Governor Candidate Bill Berrien cancels GOP event appearance in Manitowoc.
And I will read one passage from that story.
So a few minutes before, they basically announced to the room that Berrien would not be showing up.
And then the story says, the county chair then made the announcement to the crowd inside the shelter, and some people applauded.
that he didn't show up.
That he didn't show up.
That's not a good
sign.
Tough scene.
Tough scene.
That's not so good.
I don't think Bill Barian's campaign is lasting much longer.
We have news coming up next.
By the way, a shout out to Romeo16 on the live stream from Toronto.
Hey bud.
Thank you for listening in Toronto, Romeo.
News coming up next and then Audio Sorbet.
What building in the country if you could get inside, would you take advantage of it?
Where would you go?
That's all on the way.
Stay with us.
You are listening to Matt Nair on air.
on the vast state-wide, country-wide pick us up in Toronto on the app.
The Civic Media Radio Network will be right back.
Good
morning and welcome back to Matt Nair on air.
Jane Matt Nair, Greg Bach, our one and only Calzone on the board coming to you from our studio at Radio Park in Racine.
You can always join us, call or text.
The number is the same.
at 855-752-4842.
You can also leave a comment on the live stream if you're watching in the live stream.
On Facebook, YouTube, and what used to be Twitter, Brewers in action later on today, Greg Buck will be there.
Come say hi,
I'm the guy who looks like me.
Brewers hosting Cincinnati, our broadcast starts at 635.
You cannot listen to the game on the stream.
You have to listen on Terrestrial Radio, but catch the game on WRCE.
Richland Center, WISS in Oshkosh, WCQM in Park Falls, and our newest Milwaukee Brewers affiliate, WBZH in beautiful Hayward.
Hi, Mark Lundin.
Hello, Mark.
635, our broadcast starts tonight as the Brewers host Cincinnati.
So check that out a little bit later on.
This is the portion of the show that we call Audio Sorbet.
I really like to take a breath, get away from the news.
And just relax for a little bit, have some laughs.
Audio sorbet.
We clean your ears with fun.
We're gonna have a new open for that official, an official open.
Yeah, I wonder if there's anyone who can do it better though.
I think you do a great job.
It's
great.
You've come up with an accent that is completely indecipherable.
I
love it.
It's great.
We'll put a little reverb on it.
It's east coast-ish.
Yes, that's a good way to describe it.
So our topic today for Audio Sorbet, tomorrow in Milwaukee, and I highly encourage you to check it out if you have never done so, it's called Doors Open Milwaukee.
And it is an opportunity for folks to get inside buildings that normally are off limits to the public.
It's really a really cool event.
It really is.
They started doing this a number, I don't
know, maybe 15
years ago that they've been doing this in Milwaukee.
It's really fun.
It's a good family experience too, because you can bring the kids and go to these old buildings and kind of wander around and explore a little
bit.
Like you can get backstage in some places, in the basements of some places.
It's very cool.
It's really fun.
And
there's a huge long list of places that you can explore there.
If you go to the Doors Open Milwaukee website, I was just pulling it up here during
break.
There are 165 different places
on
the list here
for
the doors open list for places you can check out.
So really a wonderful event all the way around.
And I just think it's a great way to appreciate.
What's in southeastern Wisconsin?
It really is.
I mean, there is some fat.
We have some of the greatest architecture in the country.
We really do.
Some really phenomenal buildings.
And it's, yeah, go check them out.
So we will include the link to that article in our show notes.
So if you want to check out Doors Open Milwaukee tomorrow, and that will include the whole list of places that you can get into.
Some of them I think you had to sign up for already.
But again,
Lots of places you can get in for free tomorrow, so check that out.
And Sunday.
And Sunday as well.
So that led us to our audio sorbet question for today.
If you could get into any building in the country, what building would it be?
855-752-4842.
Leave a comment if you're watching on the live stream on Facebook, YouTube, and what used to be Twitter.
Brett from Brown Deer texted in way early because he wanted to get on this.
If I could get into any building, I would pick Bill Murray's house.
Boy that
just
that
felt very invasive
all of a sudden like just
Hey, it's I'm
here.
It's wide open.
Why
not?
Honestly,
he kind of seems like the type of individual who if they said I'd love to see your house He but come over to that noon.
Yeah He water wouldn't like there's no like I could see him do he's done really quirky things
and and quirky nice things and kind of quirky Krabby things.
Oh, yeah,
he
seems really grouchy.
He's a weirdo.
He's a pure weirdo and people
There was that time I was feel like the teens, the 20 teens, there was just a little too much bill Murray worshiping happening to
them.
Yeah.
There was the after that, Zombieland.
Oh, that was great.
I
think
that was wonderful.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But yeah, he would have to not be home because I wouldn't know what to do.
I'd be like,
can you not follow me?
Well, yeah.
Can you get out of your house?
I can go pick around your house.
A different approach here for the Doors Open Milwaukee question for that one, just like, which is my favorite celebrity and I'm going to their house.
And I want to snoop in their house.
Why not?
It's wide open.
If you could get into any building in the country, a Doors Open US.
Yeah.
What would the building be?
855-752-4842.
Leave a comment on the live stream, John, from West Bend Texting and listening on WAUK.
I would get into the Hall of Records at Mount Rushmore.
Oh, that's interesting.
I didn't know there was such a thing at Mount Rushmore.
That's fascinating.
I like that
answer.
That's a good one.
Ronnie from Horicon says, I would like to get into this torch on the Statue of Liberty.
which has been closed for 100
years.
Wow, that's a cool idea too.
I went to the Statue of Liberty last year when I didn't go
up
though.
I was there, I went to New York with my wife to celebrate our anniversary last year.
And we went there, I'm not great with heights, so I didn't do the walk up with Statue of Liberty.
It's just pretty high.
Yeah, yeah.
And it's not, it's like.
You know, if it's like in an elevator and I'm enclosed and like all of that, I'm fine.
But the open air stuff, no, thank
you.
Oh, tell me.
Yeah.
And I'm with you on that.
I used to be fine with heights.
I used to jump out of planes.
Can't do that anymore.
I used to jump out of planes.
Yeah.
I went skydiving
three times.
It's great.
It's awesome.
It's really fun.
You should do it.
It's fun.
No, thank you.
My wife has to ask me if I wanted to do it.
And I was just like, absolutely not.
Why would I?
I'm not great with heights to begin with.
Why are you throwing me out of
the
plane?
You want to
push me out of a plane?
What are you telling me, honey?
The first time I went, I called my mom afterwards and said, hey, I just skydived for the first time and I have a DVD.
I'll bring it over.
She goes, thank you for telling me after.
But yeah, but also really quick side note, we'll get right back on track.
You and your wife do the best trips.
When you talk about the trips that you and your wife take, you do vacationing correctly.
We love to travel.
I think that's
important.
And especially with two kids, I think a lot of parents will be like, we'll do it later.
No, I like what I like.
We get
after it.
Very good for you.
If you could get into any building in the United States, doors open US, where would it be?
855-752-4842.
Ollie from the Northwoods joining us on the line.
Good morning, Ollie.
Where would be your place?
Oh, I'd try Fort Knox.
There it is.
Just to see if there's any gold in there still or not.
Just go take a look around.
Maybe take a couple sheets of $100 bills.
Just to find out if it hasn't been rampaged already.
Who got away with all our gold?
I feel like Calvin, I should have asked you for the X-Files theme song for this one.
Appreciate it, Ollie.
Thank you.
855-752-4842.
Doors open US.
Any building in the US, if you could get inside it, where would it be?
Greg Buck?
Can I do two?
Sure.
OK, first local, and this is going to be no surprise to anybody.
it'd be the ballpark, the brewery stadium.
I would love to run around.
I mean, they do tours and they're great, but I would love to run around there for like, you would need a full day.
You're like, all right, morning, we're starting the basement.
We're working our way up and just run around the bases.
It's a big facility.
Yeah.
I would love to do that.
Just see all the, all, all the memorabilia that's in the offices that we don't get to see.
Yeah.
And
maybe sit at Mark onto Nazio's desk and make a phone call saying, I'm selling the brewers.
And you know, but the other one would be, and this also is no surprise and pretty basic.
If you, if you know me is I would love unfettered access to the grand old Opry.
Oh, that's, that's, that's the Greg, the most Greg possible
answer there.
Be a big music fan.
I
am.
And I went there, I did their tour.
It is absolutely amazing that you get a lot of access too for that, for that building.
But I would also just like to see, I would like to sit in the dressing rooms.
You can't, you can see them, but you can't go in them.
I would stand on that stage and soak up
the vibes.
And yeah, I would go there with unfettered access.
Absolutely the opera.
855-752-4842.
Our question today for Audio Sorbet.
If you could get into any building in the U.S., which one would you pick?
This kind of is a companion along with Doors Open Milwaukee,
which is
happening tomorrow.
You should go.
It's fabulous.
Liz from Sockville listening on WAU cases.
I would like to get inside the UN Secretariat building in New York City.
Do you
want to
see if the elevators work?
Escalator.
Escalator.
Be careful on those escalators.
I was so close to landing a good
joke.
They're deadly.
Can I give you a little fun fact about Greg?
Sure.
In 2007, I did a month-long seminar through UW Milwaukee, GoPanthers, where I had, quote, unquote, a job at the UN with all my classmates.
And we went there five days a week, and we met with various leaders, whether they were ambassadors, the high-up assistants,
And I had a badge that got me into the building like an employee.
And one of those rooms I could go into, I got to go to security council meetings.
And I will say this, you know me, you know, I love process.
And I love, I love a good law show, but it's incredibly boring because everything's done in the rooms outside of that big room.
All the deals are made.
So when they're coming out, they're really just voting.
It's already a done deal.
But when you
do it for the first time, and they're voting, they're voting on a package of aid bills to help Sierra Leone at the time, because they were being ravaged by the war, by the warlords.
Even though it was just about voting yes, and that was it, it was still one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
I believe
it.
And that actually goes back to what I said before about Jesse Waters, makes me even more angry, because I met those people.
It's bureaucracy of a global scale, but those individuals love what they do, and it was so much fun.
855-752-4842.
Doors open U.S., if you can get inside any building across the country, where would it be?
Dan Schaefer.
I don't have a good answer for this, to be honest with you.
I can't, like, off the top of my head.
My brain is going to conspiracy theory stuff.
Because I want to, like, you mentioned, like, Area 51 or Fort Knox or, like, all these different stuff.
I just want to know the real thing, you know, to get the real White House tour
or
whatever else, like, that kind of stuff.
But can I share one Milwaukee-related, doors open,
kind of
adjacent story?
So, the PAPS Theater is one of the places that's usually on there.
It's not on the list this year, so they must have shows this year.
weekend going on, but at the Pap's Theatre, I did this story about this guy who was the caretaker of the Pap's Theatre for 40 years.
I did this story when I was at Milwaukee Magazine, and so I got to go along with him, and I got to go
above the chandelier in
the pap's theater and walk.
They're
like these weird planks above
it.
The catwalks.
Yeah,
yeah, the catwalks up there from like, and he is up there all the time, like making sure things, and they do this thing once a year where they lower the chandelier, clean it, and they usually invite media in to do this whole thing.
So it was like around that time.
So I got to go above the chandelier in the pap's theater.
That's pretty
cool.
So like, if there are those types of things,
in famous historic buildings around
the
country to get really, really behind the scenes with someone expert guide to
take
you along with it, that would be super cool.
Calvin, what would yours be?
I didn't
think I had a good idea, but for whatever reason, Brett's Bill Murray's house kind of sparked in me something adjacent to that sort of... It's not really a building, it's more of a property with multiple...
buildings, but Skywalker Ranch in
California.
That's a good one.
George Lucas' movie production property.
There might be people who
don't know that.
There might be people who don't
know that.
Okay, fine.
They had a
life.
Did you know that Skywalker Ranch has its own fire department?
I know that because I have a Skywalker Ranch fire department patch, and it's like a regular fire department patch, but with the Millennium Falcon on it.
Listen to how excited I
have done so few things in my life.
Anybody else want to get in before we go to eight by five, seven, five, two, four, eight, four, two.
Did you say one?
I didn't.
Mine is very specific to me.
One of my first jobs during high school.
I worked at the gift shop at Holy Hill outside of Hartford, outside of Aaron.
in southeastern Wisconsin.
I worked at the gift shop at Coley Hill, and I was convinced even then that there are secret passageways in that building.
I would want to get in to Coley Hill.
And be and take a torch doors open Holy Hill.
Yes.
I think there's I think there's I have no basis for this I should we
contact them should we try to get get up behind the scenes to her
for chance Let's put
anyone is listening who is involved I'm sure Yeah,
why do you want to
come here?
We think there are
ghosts All right, we're gonna wrap it up when we return with this shouldn't be a thing may own nazing addition stay close You are listening to Matt near on air.

As always, if you have a thing you think should not be, send it in to Greg and me at janesaysatcivicmedia.us.
This is from the Toronto Sun, Danette Wilford, with the byline, headline reads, Helmins offers to save Spanish cafe after alleged arson over mayonnaise.
Wait, this was in Canada?
The Toronto Sun reported it happened in Spain.
Oh my god
a cafe owner in Spain is getting its business back on track.
Thank you to Hellman's mayonnaise After a disgruntled mayonnaise demanding customer allegedly started a fire Cafeteria La Postasse Took to Instagram to share their news this afternoon.
We suffered an attack
in which a customer who was coming to our cafe asked us for a couple of packets of mayonnaise.
They told him they didn't have any.
So he quietly left.
That was not the end.
He stopped at a gas station right down the road, filled up a gas can, came back to the cafe, demanded mayonnaise.
When told, no mayonnaise, no ketchup, he doused the counter and set it ablaze.
That seems
a
little extreme.
I need to know more about this man's totally bad day Right cuz I don't know of This is I need to know what happens like like this needs to be followed up on because You ask for condiments they say no
we don't have say
oh well Thank you very much.
I'll have a wonderful day You press the door the little bell dings and you go on with your day or like reading your book
or
music And then he comes back and asks again, and you're like still don't have them.
Yeah, sorry
Well, there must be punishment then.
And look, I'm not saying every other country in the world is brand spanking amazing, but this does not feel like a Spain story.
This feels like a Florida story.
It really does.
No, this happens all over the world, Greg.
It happened in Florida, Spain.
Yeah, this is, I don't know if that's comforting or not, but it's not just happening here.
Hellman's Mayonnaise, after hearing about the story posted on social media, cafeteria La Postas, we're sorry we weren't there.
From now on, count on us, says Hellman's.
Let us take care of the repairs and we will make sure your sandwiches never run out of mayonnaise again.
The alleged arsonist suffered burns.
No one else was hurt.
He was restrained by bystanders and arrested.
Yeah, he was ordered into custody without bail.
I'm pretty sure in jail.
They don't have mayonnaise either.
I'm speculating.
They don't
have helmets.
That's
for sure.
They
have they have like, you know,
just
a packet.
Oh, a package that says mayonnaise and it's got one ass and you're like, oh, disgusting.
I won't lie.
You know, and
I want to know more about this guy.
If you're like, if your day goes so poorly or your life is not going well that this is your reaction to lack of mayonnaise, then- You think it's deeper than that?
Yeah, I'm not a doctor, but I feel like, you know, I hate to see his reaction to a massive inconvenience.
Like, sorry, sir, we ran out of bread.
No, that don't even tell him that.
Yeah, so, yeah, I want to know more.
We'll see if we can find a follow-up.
That wraps up today's episode of-
This shouldn't be a thing.
Thank you, Greg and Calvin and all of our engineers and everyone at Civic Media without you, nothing works.
By the way, congratulations, Max FM.

Y-A-R-D.
text in the word yard you're in the running for the daily prize which is 200 bucks in cash and gold jewelry and then you're in the running for the grand prize two club level indoor seats to see Green Bay take on Minnesota
November 23rd at noon.
We have a gas card to get you there and back.
It's worth fifteen hundred and fifty bucks.
It's amazing.
It's a pretty nice package.
I think I'm more like, yeah, packer tickets are great.
Don't get me wrong.
But I will say this.
I love the gift card.
The gas card.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's pretty nice.
So text in the
word.
Such a nerd.
For so many reasons.
I
love a
value.
Yard is the word.
Y-A-R-D.
And by the way, I wanted to say good morning to Brian from Mosinie, who just texted in morning.
Hi, Brian.
Good morning, Brian.
And that's not the word, by the way.
The word is yard.
Y-A-R-D.
Good luck.
You have until 10 o'clock.
and then your next word coming your way at 11.
She is our guest, Dr. Kristen Lyerle, host of the Dr. Kristen Lyerle Show on weekends.
Good morning, my friend.
Your phone must have been blowing up yesterday.
Yeah, yesterday, the day before.
We were already talking about using Tylenol in pregnancy and whether it was a link to autism, which there is not.
Tylenol in pregnancy does not cause autism.
So, I mean, that's been kind of brewing, but...
Yeah, to hear that big declaration, to hear Trump stumble through the word acetaminophen, to see the reaction, and then to get all these texts from so many friends who are either pregnant or are living with autism in their family.
This has stirred up so much emotion and so many questions and so much conversation.
I think people are really starting to see
it.
Took that clip that you put out on social media explaining directly about the zero findings of a link between Tyler and autism And I put that on a friend's social media post because he was posting about it Of course agreeing with what you're talking about and then someone because there's always someone comes in going well Why can't we just allow doctors to blah blah blah and it came into a whole thing and I just finally said Here is my friend.
She is very smart
This is what she's saying, corroborating another doctor's comment, by the way.
And I said specifically, this topic is not worth her time.
She's got other things to be doing, but now she has to talk about it and talk about something very simple because the president of the United States, not just a dude, got up on the most microphone podium in the country, maybe the world and said these words.
And the thing that really rocked me on in the whole.
The whole clip, Dr. Lyle, is the fact that you have to say now to people it's not your fault.
I
know.
I know.
That is the worst part because people who have family members who are taking care of friends with autism
They're suffering they want an answer and to give them this false hope and to somehow make it seem like it is their fault that they ended up in this situation is just so Beyond shameful and for the president of the United States to say it in the way that he said it and then to go on and say the pregnant women should just suffer with their pain I mean
You don't want them to have birth control.
You don't
want them to have abortions.
You want them to get pregnant, but you don't want them to have the things that they need to be able to navigate their pregnancies safely, including hospitals in rural areas where they can deliver their babies.
I mean, you've got to be kidding me.
That really jumped out at me too, Dr. Lierly, when he said, if you can't tough it out, essentially, if you're not tough enough to deal with your discomfort, then okay, I guess you can take it.
Kind of indicting pregnant women for not being tough enough.
We're not being tough enough.
Even though other Republicans have said it requires no special gifts to give birth.
Right.
Or they think as soon as the baby comes out, like the pregnancy is over.
Everything's not that's normal.
No, it takes a year to recover.
It's just, it's shameful.
You know, it's.
There just aren't that many things that people can use in pregnancy to manage pain.
And this is something that we've used forever, and most people use it at some point in their pregnancy.
So, for him...
to do this and to put pregnant women in a situation where they're always thinking about, should I put this in my body?
Should I eat this?
Should I take this medicine?
Should I treat this condition?
And they often don't want to even treat things like blood pressure problems because they're worried that the medicine that they take is going to cause problems for their baby when, in reality, high blood pressure causes many,
many more
problems.
Yes, so women have to have the information that they need and they need to be encouraged to take the right medications that they need to treat their conditions.
And that is exactly the opposite of what Donald Trump and RFK were saying.
Well, and again, neither of them are doctors.
They're not even medical researchers.
They're two dudes.
Yeah, with a
political agenda.
with an agenda
and the
comments that people have made on that post, which has gotten like 115,000 views.
I mean, it was, it was really popular.
Some of the comments where people were questioning the data or they would say, well, did you see the Harvard study?
Well, did you see all the studies?
You can't just cherry pick one thing or another.
One study does not make a medical movement.
If they can get the name of one study or name a college or a university or something, when they say the, check VAERS, it's like,
Do you know what you're really talking about right now?
Do you understand what you're doing because you're trying to now, because someone else will hear these words and they won't research it.
They'll just say, well, I know Harvard's a smart place and they said study.
So I'll just say Harvard study and they'll know what I'm talking about.
If you're just joining us by the way, Dr. Kristen Lyerle is our guest.
She's the host of Dr. Kristen Lyerle show in Green Bay on weekends.
And we're talking about Donald Trump and Bob Jr's announcements yesterday.
Don't take Tylenol.
We have a compilation
courtesy of Jimmy Kimmel actually
compilation
courtesy of the Kimmel show if you want us here's a basic summation of the entire speech they gave earlier this week from the White House regarding this topic Calvin will you play that please
don't take Tylenol
Don't take it.
With Tylenol, don't take it.
Don't take it.
Don't use Tylenol.
Don't take Tylenol.
Don't take Tylenol.
Fight like hell, not to take
it.
There
it is.
I think you shouldn't take it.
Don't take Tylenol.
The baby goes, gets a shot.
They say, here, take a couple of Tylenol.
I've heard that for years.
Take Tylenol.
Don't take Tylenol.
Don't have your baby take Tylenol.
Don't give Tylenol.
To the baby.
Don't give Tylenol to the baby.
Don't give your baby Tylenol.
Don't take Tylenol.
Don't take Tylenol.
Don't take Tylenol.
Don't take it.
Don't take it.
So That's it.
There's nothing much to say.
Don't take Tylenol.
Just don't take it.
And I just say
to you
don't take Tylenol.
Don't take it.
That sums it up what he just said.
There's nothing left to say.
There was nothing to say to begin with.
Yeah, that's
it.
Grandpa, it's time for bed.
Yeah, exactly.
And the other important piece of this that I think is getting skipped over, so the alternative now that they're suggesting this, Lou Varkin.
Luca Voron.
contains a folic acid from what I understand.
This is being sold by a company that Dr. Oz has staked in.
I don't know about that, but I can tell you that the data is not there for leukovorin.
So this is another whole entire problem.
The data is not there.
We are years away from being able to recommend leukovorin.
And the data at this point only supports that it treats
a particular symptom in a certain subset of people with autism.
But they're selling it like, if you have autism, they're almost selling it like a cure, like a snake oil.
But it's not there, guys.
And the fact that they're making it available to people who have Medicaid, and it's going to be something that you can get your hands on, it's not there.
This is false hope, and it's not fair.
And isn't it?
It's like supplements.
It's a supplement.
St.
John's Wart.
It's the same thing as those kinds of things.
Is that correct?
It's
not.
It is a B vitamin, so it sounds like it's a supplement, but it's actually something that we use in chemotherapy to treat methotrexate overdoses.
I've never used it in my practice because there's some very particular uses, but it's not like a multivitamin that you can just buy over the counter.
You do need a prescription
for it.
But again, I think it's important to note, at least from what I was finding yesterday, Dr. Oz, who is now part of our health system,
is part of a group that owns this,
this drug.
Well, and also speaking of Dr. Oz.
24 hours ago, and this was reported in, I'm looking at you two, Yahoo News.
He walked the statement from President Trump back.
Oh, he did.
And he said, quote, we know that people who take Tylenol for prolonged periods of time during pregnancy seem to have a higher incidence of autism and aggregate.
I don't know what that means.
Show me the study on that one, doc.
So the message is not,
Never take Tylenol.
It's take Tylenol judiciously.
Take it by talking with your doctor.
Make sure that you have an important reason to take it.
Important reason is pain.
You take it because of pain.
Don't take it.
This is the words of a doctor.
Don't take it willy-nilly.
because you think it's so safe, it couldn't possibly cause a problem because those assumptions appear to be erroneous.
That statement just wrapped in tons of research and data, doctor.
I don't even know how we're talking about this.
He's right, we're wrong, let's take some supplements.
But
isn't that the advice that you would give any patient, doctor, liarly, is take it sparingly, right?
Nobody's like, yes, take as many drugs as you can ingest.
No doctor is telling you that, or are they?
And talk to your doctor about it so that you can personalize your care.
But you know what you said, Greg, I think is really important because this is what they did with Luka Voron.
This is what they're doing with these Tylenol studies.
They find something that has a grain of truth to it.
And you know, when you look at all the Tylenol studies out there, there are some studies that show that there is an association between taking Tylenol in pregnancy and autism.
And that is true.
And there are other studies that show that there is not an association.
including a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association that was huge.
So the association is a maybe, but association does not mean causation.
It does not mean that Tylenol in pregnancy causes autism.
It's like saying eating ice cream is associated with drowning.
Eating ice cream doesn't make you drown.
You just eat ice cream when it's warmer out, and you also go swimming more often.
So they take that confusing piece of information that a lot of people who aren't in the science world and can't parse out the studies because they don't have the background, and they use it to politicize it and benefit from it.
And it's wrong.
I also think it's important of Vears keeps coming up.
It's V-A-E-R-S Vears.
Ron Johnson cited it yesterday because now he's still pushing the horse medication and talking about all the reports on Vears.
I could go to the Vears website and report that I drank orange juice and I grew a unicorn horn.
I could.
And because there is no check up on those reports to VAERS, correct?
And there shouldn't be.
And there shouldn't be because it is meant to be an open database where people can report whatever their adverse effects are.
And then they take that information and look into it.
I'm going to do that right after the show.
It's getting in the way of my headphones, this unicorn horn.
It's just not very useful.
We're going to continue our conversation with Dr. Kristin Lierly on the other side.

So text in the word YARD, Y-A-R-D, and good luck.
Dr. Kristin Lierly is here, our friend and colleague talking about, of course, Donald Trump yesterday and Bob Jr.
coming out, scaring people about using Tylenol, and we had a text from Sue in Franklin.
And I kind of agree with Sue.
She said, uh, how about releasing the Epstein files?
Right?
Yeah.
And, and this, this is serious and this is important, but we've talked about this again since Trump began his second term.
These are lots of squirrels.
These are lots of things to distract from bigger things that they would like us not to be talking about.
And that goes to, we're going to talk about escalator gates that we're going to do that tomorrow because we just don't have time today.
Have you seen the signs that look like a Tylenol bottle, but it says Epsteinaminophen?
And you know what?
Trump probably couldn't say it as well.
And the problem is that now it's important to delineate, though, when we say distract, because I heard a really great video about this.
When we say distractions, we don't mean that they shouldn't be taken seriously.
And that it's
not important.
Or not.
That is the problem, too, is that these distractions have to get bigger and bigger and
and meaner and more threatening and more dangerous to the public and to our basic liberties and democracy they don't care what they use as a distraction but they still are the fact that we passed a budget that is going to rip health care away from people and we have a we have a file a report that gives the names of a lot of individuals who need to be held accountable because
as we never talk about when we're discussing the obscene vials.
This is about the justice, the closure, and peace of mind of the victims and their families.
The survivors, those who have been through this, that's who we should care about.
I don't care about some celebrity who might be on that list.
If they're on that list, let the law have them.
But yeah, the distractions are going to get bigger and more dangerous.
But they are the things that try to keep our eyes off the ball.
Well, and again, not that these aren't important things because they are.
But I do think the budget's going to we're we're going to run out of funding for the for the government next week.
And so
Republicans have full control of the government.
I mean,
there's no excuse.
And they're blaming the Democrats that they can't get a budget deal done.
Yes, they control all three branches, but it's the Democrats fault.
Yeah,
it's crazy.
Let's talk about your show.
Another thing that we do not give enough attention to is school shootings and this weekend we're going to be talking with a family.
who their three-year-old son goes to Ascension Catholic School in Minneapolis, and they tell their harrowing story of how they live across the street.
She dropped him off at school and heard the gunfire when she got home and literally ran eight months pregnant back to the school to get her son.
He's okay, but these folks are traumatized.
Their community is traumatized, and you get to hear their story on the Dr. Kristen Ligerley show this weekend.
It is, and you're right, we don't talk about it enough.
We have just, I'm, since Sandy Hook, since Sandy Hook happened, and we as a country did nothing about Sandy Hook.
This has just become part of daily life, it seems like.
We don't, you know, we can't talk about any reasonable gun safety measures.
No, no, no, no, no, no, it's, it's- Don't politicize it.
Don't politicize it, yeah.
It's too soon.
So this is just freedom.
This is just freedom.
My 19 year old was a second grader when Sandy Hook happened and every time I think of Sandy Hook and I think of he's an adult and all of these kids that didn't graduate and we still haven't made any headway it's thoughts and prayers and that's another thing that they talked about was thoughts and prayers I never were enough and now they're just insulting and you can see the the dad just the energy coming from him and how he is turning it into activism and he is so determined
to make people, to make our leaders do something.
That's his message, do something.
And it's important too, and I just saw this yesterday and I'll look further into this, but Alex Jones, Alex Jones, that hate monger who he has the right to say the horrible things he says, who tortured the families of those kids for years, got them doxxed, had people showing up at their homes,
threatening the parents of these murdered children.
Now, the Trump administration is going after one of the investigators into that shooting.
Alex Jones still hasn't paid out anything.
Yeah, why?
Why?
This is another, this is a true distraction.
Like, let it go and focus on things that are actually gonna make a difference for people.
If they're not releasing... Like
responsible gun ownership.
Like mental health.
That'd be good.
If they're not releasing the Epstein files, you sure as heck are not gonna get Alex Jones ever paid.
time to anybody for anything.
But if you want to tell your leaders about how you feel about these topics, my vote.wi.gov, go
there, put in your
information, find out your representatives, call them, email them, send them a letter, be respectful, but tell them what real leadership looks like.
And if they're not doing the job you think they are doing, they should be doing.
Guess what?
We have elections next year.
Keep your eyes open for what's going on.
When can we hear your show this weekend?
It's gonna be on WGBW on Sunday morning at nine o'clock on WISS on Saturday and Sunday at three and we're posting online on all the socials So just follow me and I'll give you an easy place to click
Dr. Kristen Lyrely host of the Dr. Kristen Lyrely show.
Thank you so very much my friend really appreciate it Love hanging out with you guys.
We have news coming up next and then we go beyond the cheese with the Wisconsin State Cranberry Association
Don't go away, you're listening to Matt Maier on air on the vast, statewide, country-wide, pick us up around the world and in Minnesota on the Civic Media Radio Network.

You cannot listen on this stream.
You do have to listen on terrestrial radio so you can catch the action on WRC in Richland Center and here in Racina Kenosha on WRJN.
So the crew at the Padres, our broadcast starts today at 2.35.
We haven't gone beyond the cheese for a while.
We're very excited.
decided we have the open cabin.
Let's go for it.
Beyond the cheese.
We go beyond the cheese where we highlight industries in Wisconsin.
Outside of dairy, we are delighted to be joined by the executive director of the Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association.
Grant Holly is here.
Good morning, Grant.
Good
morning.
How are you guys doing this
morning?
We are great and we are delighted to have you here.
We love learning about Wisconsin.
And I think because I've been doing this for so long, I am pretty aware of the importance of cranberries in Wisconsin.
Grant, but I don't think people appreciate just how many cranberries we grow and what a big part of the state economy cranberries are.
We grow almost all of them, which is kind of cool.
We account for about 67% of the country's cranberries and over half of the world's cranberries.
So odds are when you're going past cranberries, especially if you're in Wisconsin, they were probably grown here.
And they've been being grown here since Wisconsin was Wisconsin.
So they've been here forever.
So the question I have is because whenever you hear, and I must admit, I think it was only a few years ago when I found out the importance of cranberries to our state economy is when you think of cranberries, you think of a fruit, you don't generally think fruits the best place in Wisconsin because of seasons and weather and all that stuff.
So what makes Wisconsin so great for cranberry growing and our pure dominance in the industry?
pure
dominance.
Yes.
Wisconsin forever.
So
yes, it's so what makes the cranberries so special, especially within Wisconsin?
One is our climate.
And there's the whole climate change piece and everything that's going on out there is actually only strengthening with cranberries right now.
So the fact that they are a fruit that grows so far to the north means they're pretty hardy.
They do have like a
good coat on them.
They have a nice skin.
It's not easily bruised like other fruit and it ships very easy.
But the other pieces is that it tolerates a lot of abuse, which is really kind of nice, which aids in the fact that you don't have to add a lot of things to it for shipping.
You don't have to add things to it to be able to bring it home.
It cooks.
Well, it is packed full of nutrients and then Wisconsin itself because the cranberry originated here.
There are so many special things about cranberries that we're only starting to be able to learn when a crop.
is found in that area.
There are symbiotic relationships.
So if you picked potatoes up from South America and brought them to North America, you're not bringing everything else that goes along with it.
You're not bringing all the little critters in the ground, not bringing all the bacteria, all the fungus.
And so you have to synthetically help.
that crop because it's in a brand new area.
Sort of like a southerner moving up to Wisconsin.
I got to find a big coat.
That
was job
one.
But with cranberries, we still have all of those things that are sort of in play, which helps us to be able to reduce a lot of other pieces that you see inside of agriculture.
We don't till.
And it really just makes a product that is really good for the environment.
And as we're finding out more and more, it's really good for you.
Boy, I sound like a commercial, but that's what I'm...
Well, you should be.
You are.
You are the executive director of Cranberry, so...
Yes.
You're at Cranberry for sure, essentially.
Yeah.
Well, that's really... I'm your connection, no problem
whatsoever.
The first taste is free.
We have enough we have more than enough so that leads me to another question then for me is that you know when we think of cranberries we think of desserts we'll think of juice of course what are things that what are things that we don't associate with cranberry that we may use in our everyday life or or as you said
things we're finding out, we're getting use out of them for that just, you know, they do a good job.
What purpose do cranberry serve besides the usual suspects of what we eat and drink?
So, I mean, easily, I mean, you go through the grocery store and you're right.
You're gonna find the juice, you're gonna find some of the sweet and dried stuff that's out there, but you can really go beyond that.
Again, Southern Boy coming up to the North.
One of the reasons why I wanted my seasons back, so that's why I love Wisconsin.
I'm a very seasonal person.
Do cranberries exactly the same way?
So, I usually have some in the freezer.
Frozen, they freeze up to a year, again, because that nice, thick coating that they have on them.
And I'll use them for smoothies quite a bit.
I literally just throw some orange juice in, throw
some
cranberries in, maybe a few blueberries, banana if you want, a bullet that's sucker up.
And suddenly you got a great snack in the summertime, but beyond that.
So that's also, it's one thing that I love about Wisconsin is it's packed full of carnivores.
Let's talk about where we can also bring it in.
So you brought in, you
This segment is beyond cheese, but we can also talk about it.
It pairs very well with so many of the Wisconsin cheeses.
Wonderful thing to be able to do is go out and get a nice Wisconsin porterhouse.
And then I'm the type that it's, I kind of like it still moving.
So I get it on the grill and I throw a little bit of Wisconsin brie on top of that to where it starts to caramelize.
Drizzle a cranberry relish on top of it.
That sounds really good.
The
only thing better is especially with the holidays that are coming up.
Grab a bird.
I don't care what kind of bird
it
is.
Make it a pheasant.
Grab a turkey.
Duck works really, really well.
If you don't like a pigeon, grab one of those.
I don't care.
I was going to say seagull.
As long as you said seagull and not eagle in case the DNR is watching
But you stuff those birds with those cranberries because stuffing always comes out a little edgy anyway So you put the cranberries inside of the bird inside of the cavity and it really Enhances the flavor if you want to get some like the cinnamon flavored I did some of the jalapeno flavored cranberries for duck and again It it was a religious experience
that sounds
really
the flavors.
And I just don't think that that's something people ever have ever thought of.
It's, you know, it's Thanksgiving.
You have the turkey, and you have, of course, the perfectly natural tin cranberries that come out with the ridges on it.
which is their original form naturally.
But I mean, I grew up.
That's fancy.
I don't know about you.
But but I do think that there's a lot more going back to the natural state of things, which is only better for us.
Yeah.
It really is, and cranberries are so good for you.
We're actually funding within the industry a number of health research pieces and the health research that's starting to be able to come out.
And we've always known that it makes E. Coli nice and slippery.
You say cranberry, somebody else is gonna say UTI.
And they're good, that's gonna be harmonious all the way through.
But this past year, we found out that the same bacteria that causes a lot of stomach ulcers, H. pylori,
It does the same thing with that bacteria.
It makes it nice and slippery, sends it out of the system.
So now Occam's razor comes in to where if it's making these bacteria nice and slippery, what other bacteria
are they
making
nice and
slippery as well?
So is this a flavorful kombucha?
Is this something that actually is really helping with probiotics?
Apologies to the Kanbucha people that are out there, but it's
not mine.
It's terrible.
This tastes
good.
There you
go.
There's my million dollars.
But this is, it's healthcare people can afford.
It really is incredibly healthy.
There are flavonoids that are in there, Harvard's doing a huge research on them.
currently they've been working on the chemical forever.
And then they were actually looking to be able to source the chemical that's really aiding the human condition because their original source was not panning out well and they tested cranberries and we were through the roof.
So now they are...
We're sort of saddled onto that.
They were doing the study anyway, but now that they're actually using cranberries for the source, because it's the most economical and it's the best source that they can use, it's only gonna be good for us, we think.
If you're just joining us, we are going beyond the cheese with Grant Holly.
He is the executive director of the Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association.
We own cranberries,
baby.
Yeah,
Wisconsin, we own them.
That's that's the question I want to ask.
And I don't want to get you in trouble because I know you're the executive director of the Association.
So I know you have to walk probably political lines just in your business and industry.
But when we think you brought it up yourself, when people think cranberry juice, they'll also think UTIs.
Is there, you know, cranberry juice is great.
I love it.
But it's also very sugar packed.
I don't think it's the best representation of cranberries.
What do you say to people who just will say like, oh, I'll just drink cranberry juice.
Do you say, well, no, you want to, you want to actually have the cranberry, put it in the bullet, mix it up, do that thing, but you can't rely upon a store-bought sugar pack cranberry juice to do the job of what you're talking about.
You don't think you're absolutely right and this is going to come down to a lot of personal preference.
Sometimes it comes down to willpower because so there is like a cranberry pure that's out there and you take a shot of that a day and it is 18 kinds of amazing.
It is bitter and if you sit back and it's like that's what keeps you from taking it then okay.
Let's at least get the stuff that's inside of you.
I'm a Gen Xer.
I took Flintstones vitamins when I was a kid, so that means I'm going to live to be a thousand.
One of the reasons why kids take Flintstones vitamins is because they had added sugar.
And my grandmother, it's again, go back down to the south.
And when the chickens came out of the barnyard, they were incredibly healthy.
We fed them incredibly great.
yada yada yada, but for me to be able to eat it as a kid, the things that my grandmother did to that chicken did not make it what I would call healthy in another sense.
So whatever you do to it is completely up to you to be able to bring it into your diet, but you are bringing those nutrients into your diet.
Personally, I do take a lot of the fresh cranberries.
I freeze them out.
I like the taste, to be perfectly honest.
I don't need the sugar.
And there are numerous products out there that have literally zero sugar, low sugar,
and
then you got the others that basically add in as much sugar as you're going to find in raisins, naturally.
Grant, do you have to do anything to fresh cranberries because they're really hard, aren't they?
They are, but play with it.
It's the best thing that I can say.
Literally turn it into an experiment, turn it into a family type of event.
So again, when I throw it inside of a bird for stuffing, it's they break down nice and easy.
Sometimes I'll smoosh them up a little bit to try and get more of the juice in.
I'm still sort of messing around with that.
But it's that, that even though they are kind of hard, it now brings in a ton of fiber into your diet at the same time.
So again, you're getting even more of the good stuff that's actually starting to be able to come through.
We're going to continue our conversation with Grant Holly as we go beyond the cheese with the Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association.
Cranberry is not just for throwing at your younger siblings anymore.
We'll have more on the other side.
Stay with us.
You are listening to Matt and Air on Air on this Civic Media radio network.
We'll be right back.
Beyond the cheese.
Good morning.
Welcome back to Matt Nair on Air.
Jane Matt Nair, Greg Bach.
Doctors, slide on the board coming to you from our studio at Radio Park in Racine.
Join us, call or text at 855-752-4842.
You can also leave a comment on the live stream.
Good morning, live stream on Facebook, YouTube and what used to be Twitter.
Delighted to be joined by our guest, the executive director of the Wisconsin State Cranberry Association Growers.
Grant Holly is
here, we're talking all things cranberries, and we were talking before the break about all the things that you can do with them, and some of it, Grant, just requires a little experimentation.
So you said you throw them in smoothies, and you throw them in right from the freezer, just in their natural state, and you throw them in the bullet, and away you go.
That's it and I you I've added them of course into muffins I've had them into all kinds of baked goods because they take the heat really really well The the recipes that we get and if you actually go to our website and it's really easy to find instead of giving long addresses I've learned to just tell people just Google Wisconsin and cranberries I guarantee you will find our site right tons of recipes that are on there Yeah, it's gonna be our show notes today.
Yeah
it's you'll find tons of recipes that are on there and they're real it's it's so much fun to be able to just play with them and it's again as I said before it's making a family event it's it helps the kids it's let the it's they're pretty safe to be able to work with
Grab the kids and start coming up with your own recipes for cranberries.
They heat well.
They freeze well.
They're not bullies.
So they don't take over the flavors that other things will actually do.
They really add to the flavor quite a bit.
Cranberries play nice.
There you go.
Jenny on the live stream says toss cranberries in a bit of powdered sugar and bake for 10 to 15 minutes.
This takes the ultra hardness away and leaves a little fun pop when you bite down.
great
snack during the holidays.
And she also goes on to say the cranberry cannolis at the Wisconsin State Fair this year were capital letters outstanding WTG WC.
I don't know what
that means.
Oh, there we
go.
I don't know what the kids speak is.
I don't know.
Like, you know, all you younger
folks.
Who buys a lot of our cranberries grand me.
Wisconsin really does quite a bit.
Wisconsin buys quite a bit and then we send out to a lot of the other states at the same time.
We have handlers inside of Wisconsin to make sure that the process cranberries get out through the country quite a bit.
The fresh cranberries, we have a lot of people come up.
and in from other states just to be able to get the fresh.
A better network to be able to get the fresh out could be really good for the industry and it's something that we are exploring.
Internationally we do send a lot of cranberries to Canada.
We send a lot of cranberries over to Europe.
We send a lot of cranberries over to China and it's
Folks, it's again, whether it's for the health reasons, whether it's because they're so hardy, whether it's because they transport so well.
But there's also this level of people want crops that are incredibly sustainable.
And there's that piece as well.
And really, if you eat cranberries, you can eat it from other earth as well.
Because we don't till.
The farms that we have have been there for 100, 150 years.
We have vines that are older than I am by far.
Thank God, by far.
But it's these things, they wouldn't still be there if we were doing things incorrectly.
One of the best things that we have to be able to keep our weeds down and our bugs down is ice.
The next one is sand.
So really, when those are your big natural pieces, because they were found here and they grow here, the environment has already found a way to be able to help them grow.
So... So they're pretty clean, right?
They're pretty clean.
Are they very...
Labor intensive, because we talk to people who wrote ginseng in Wisconsin and good heavens, you have to sing to that stuff.
Are
cranberries as labor intensive as like ginseng?
Not
as labor intensive as ginseng, those folks.
Boy, they work really hard.
Our folks do as well, but it's because we are able to do it with fewer people.
So a single family can work a medium-sized cranberry marsh almost by themselves.
So we've taken so many of the hybrids.
Before, when harvest would last like maybe a week or two, you needed all kinds of people, all kinds of equipment, but Wisconsin farmers really invested into their state.
So we have these hybrids now.
And we have hybrids that will start producing their berries that are ready to be harvest right around the second week of September.
And then we have hybrids that will delay so that we can go almost all the way to hunting season, forcing the years to marches.
So two or three folks inside of a family can actually handle the harvesting if they're able to stagger it as best that you can.
This year in the weather, of course, Mother Nature likes to throw curveballs.
We are moving a little bit faster this year than we have before.
This warm weather during harvest is kind of unheard of, and we're learning how to deal with it, but one of the pieces that it has done is we have growers that are out there for 14, 16 hours a day bringing in their berries because we need to bring them in now.
We don't want them sitting in the heat humidity for much longer.
So, I mean, they're tough and they handle that cold and they do tolerate the heat, but for these lengths of time, no.
Well,
yeah, farming is constantly having to adjust, right?
It's constantly, yeah, it never ends.
