Please stand by for the John and Gordy morning show.
Phone lines are open right now.
Call or text 608-879-8255 or use the free Civic Media app.
And now, live from the Civic Media headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin, here are John and Gordy.
We're truly sorry.
We're gonna go again to another program.
John and Gordy in the morning.
Good morning.
Happy Friday.
Happy Sunday.
Yeah.
Yes indeed.
Here we are.
It's a big morning.
We are...
We are fundraising this morning.
Yes, we are and this is going to be an exciting event because Catherine is out at a Dunkin Donuts, you know, she can't stop eating donuts and and this is this is made for her.
Yeah.
Yes.
Yeah, they have cops on a rooftop.
Oh, yeah.
The
cops there in uniform.
Yeah.
She's distracted already.
Secret fantasy that she has.
Oops, should not have said that again.
All right.
Well, we'll get to that in a second.
It's a beautiful day for this event.
It is perfect sunshine.
And it's going to be pretty nice all day long.
Boy, we made it through all the storms yesterday, but they didn't have a tornado touchdown east of Beaver Dam near Mayville.
Uh
huh.
Some damage there.
Thankfully, no, no serious injuries.
I think one or two people went to the hospital, but that doesn't appear to be life-threatening or anything.
But yeah, there was some very gusty winds yesterday.
My gazebo did not fly away.
It wanted to.
I could see it billowing up, ready to take off, but thankfully it did not fade.
I didn't think
it was too windy for your gazebo.
You really do lock that thing down.
Well, thank
you for your concern.
I was expecting a phone call and maybe, you know, hey, do you need a little help to see about it?
No, that's okay.
I
started to call you, but
then I got
busy.
They eat minutes past the hour.
Wait, you know what?
The thing that bothers me here is I don't think your neighbors have coughed up those beads.
No, not yet.
I haven't seen
beads hanging on your
door or on your gazebo yet.
So what's going on?
Well, I'm not sure.
I don't know.
I haven't seen them.
They may be down in New Orleans.
They go there from time to time.
Yeah.
So maybe they went back to get more.
more beats.
It's John and Gordy.
The morning producer, Sam is with us.
Good morning, Sam.
Let's check the weather.
It's currently, what does your Samsung watch say by the way?
Right now
it's 61 degrees.
No, I have it right here.
And the predicted high temperature today from the WMDX official weather watch, 80 degrees.
Oh, wow.
Okay.
Well, let's check.
You know, we haven't gotten our balls out for the lottery ball machine lately, so let's fire that up.
We
got the balls out just yesterday, Gordy, isn't that?
Like I said, we've
been getting our balls out a little too often.
First number is a seven.
And the second ball is a nine.
So 79, you said what, 80?
80.
Just 80.
OK.
Well, we're pretty
close.
It's a perfect kind of day.
Yeah, I mean it really that front move through and the humidity levels just tanked Yeah,
you know what instead of doing the national day calendar, which nobody really gives a damn about anyway Okay, why don't we check in with Catherine out at Sun Prayer?
Is she ready for this?
I don't think so.
All right.
Well, she's talking to somebody else right now.
I don't think she's paying any attention.
Yeah, Catherine Like I said, she's with us right now
She's gazing.
Glazing.
She's glazing
donuts.
There's a lot of equipment on that.
that vest he's got has a lot of equipment.
A lot of equipment.
You should find out
what
that
equipment is.
I heard you were inspecting their tool belts earlier.
Are we on the air?
Is that why you're bothering?
Oh, okay.
I'm sorry.
I didn't know.
Okay.
Hi.
Yeah.
I'm sorry.
I'm not at Duncan on Windsor.
I'm very distracted.
It's cops on a rooftop.
It happened last year too.
How many cops are there so far?
Right now there's two.
Oh, and he's delivering donuts right to
somebody's car, isn't that nice?
Hey, you might
want to ask one of them if they gave me a ticket, at least recently.
Really,
I should ask about John Peterson.
Almost
gave me a ticket, yes, almost.
John Peterson of Middleton, Wisconsin.
Can you give me a little update on him?
I will check to check your record.
So this is wonderful.
Yes, set the stage for us.
What's going on out there?
Duncan
Donuts, known, of course, colloquially as Duncan.
doing this spectacular thing they've done it 12 years in a row this is the 12th annual Duncan on Windsor and Sun Prairie and all over the state benefiting Special Olympics in Wisconsin cop on a rooftop I don't think they're actually on the roof particularly I have to check that ladder over there maybe a couple guys up there
Come by and find out 950 Windsor Street and Sun Prairie.
They raised over $70,000 in six hours in the state of Wisconsin last year.
Wow.
And all told over 11 prior years now over the whole state, 665,000 for Special Olympics.
So this thing works.
You show up, you make a donation of any amount, you'll get a coupon for a free donut.
$10 you get a free cup of coffee to go with it.
It's easy to get to them right off 151, a little east of 151.
A fantastic place to go and I love them during the Christmas season because they have the most fantastic light show.
Is this Duncan?
Yes.
Oh, I think they get into it.
They're really fantastic.
I think they should have a light show for summer as well.
But, you know, we could talk to them about that today.
Mm hmm.
Yeah.
Well, spectacular.
Callie.
We'll talk to Callie, the manager, shortly.
She's here as well, of course.
She organizes this whole thing.
Sounds good.
And we'll be checking in with you throughout the show.
And hopefully people will be making some big donations out there today.
And we may have some special things.
going on as well.
OK.
We've got a regular program as well.
I just want to throw that.
OK.
We have some stories.
I guess we fine here.
I don't need to talk to you again at all.
I'm OK.
OK.
OK.
Well, there's another one coming.
OK.
All right.
We'll check back in a couple of minutes.
Let's see.
12 past the outside.
I guess
we do have.
We should go through the National Day calendar because a lot of people are hanging on them.
You're on the edge of their seat about this.
What day is it or is it not?
Is it national do something good for your neighbor day?
Is it national pizza party day?
National bike to work day?
National biographers day?
National candy confectioners day?
What day is it not?
You know, you put so much into this
part of the program.
What day is it?
A
confectioner's program.
I don't know what it,
whatever it is.
You're right for a change.
Really?
You got it correct.
It is not that day.
Wow, can you imagine?
Um, I don't think I mentioned it, but it's also National Mamosa Day, so we can enjoy a Mamosa.
Okay.
Today, um, let's see.
Do something good for your neighbor day.
Well, that's a perfect day for the thing that's going on at Duncan in Sun Prairie.
Do something good for your neighbor.
Help out Special Olympics.
I'm sure they would appreciate a donation.
Today, stop on out to Sun Prairie.
Wow.
It's...
National Bike to Work Day today.
See, I didn't know that was happening this time of year.
Yes, yes.
So if you have the urge to do that.
I'm glad it's bike.
This time of year rather than in the middle of December.
Yeah, that wouldn't make any sense.
Yeah, they picked a better day for this.
It's National Pizza Party Day.
You know, we should have a pizza party sometime soon.
I think that would be a great idea.
I think that would be fantastic, sure.
Maybe with our friends at Sugar River Pizza.
We'll have to work on
that.
That's a great place to go.
And National Biographers Day.
Sam, do you have any history you want to run through here?
I'm just kind of skimming the treetops here on the national
big channel.
We have like a crazy amount of national days.
Too many to get to.
Yeah.
Well, do you want to highlight any of them?
Well, I don't have them.
I don't have it up in front of me, but
I looked earlier.
We do also have free ticket Friday, so I want to get to that, hopefully.
Oh, yeah.
So let's run through the.
Forget about that.
Anyway, the history books.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
What do you got?
Do you remember the very first time you were given or you earned a nickel, John and Gordy?
No.
Nope.
No, not really.
Well, a nickel used to be worth a whole lot more.
You could do a lot more with it.
You could buy a candy bar for a nickel.
Wow,
really?
Yeah.
And then when they went up to a dime was like, oh my
God, prices have changed.
Yeah.
Well, today in 1866, Congress created the nickel.
Now it's a darn near insignificant coin.
That was the India, was it?
I don't know.
I don't know
specifically
what it looked like.
Maybe.
I don't remember.
I think Jefferson's on it now, right?
I
don't
look at them closely.
The only thing that I use Nichols for is I get it as changed and then I pour it into the self-checkout thing where it's got the automatic coin counter.
That's the only thing I save coins for anymore.
They're doing away with a penny though, aren't they?
Well, it's been tossed around.
Have they actually done it?
No,
they're seriously considering getting rid
of the
penny.
What are we going to do at all of the tourist traps that have those souvenir penny machines?
Yeah,
those are fantastic, right?
It's kind of fun,
yeah.
Now we'll have to pay a dime to get some pennies,
probably.
Exactly.
Jumping forward a bit, today in 1966, the Beach Boys Pet Sounds was
released.
Fantastic album.
Great album.
Really good.
It influenced the Beatles tremendously.
Sargent
cover.
That's right.
go back and forth and sort of outdo each other for a while, weren't they?
They were
friendly rivals,
yes.
Kind of funny.
Today in 1985, so for a while scientists had known that...
chemicals in like spray cans, CFCs were doing damage to the atmosphere.
But in 1985 on this day, they announced that humans had created a hole in the ozone layer.
Yeah.
Or Antarctica.
Yes, that was quite the news at the time.
Was it a big shocker?
It was a big
shocker.
Yeah.
It really
woke people up,
I
think, to the fact that, yeah, we were destroying the
atmosphere.
It was like holding a magnifying glass over parts of the Earth.
Right, right.
We're the ants.
Kind of fine.
I saw one thing.
Scientists currently predict that the hole in the ozone layer is going to return to pre-1980s strength by about the end of this century.
Oh, great.
Well, thanks.
So good to know we're on track for full recovery.
Yes.
Oh, God.
And last thing I got today, in 1986, Top Gun hit theaters.
I still haven't seen the original Top Gun.
Oh, it's a really good movie.
Yeah.
Check
it out sometime.
It
is pretty good.
Actually, the follow-up...
Maverick, was pretty good too,
and I was a little shocked.
I had seen that one, I liked that.
I was surprised by that.
Okay.
Thank you, Sam, for the look at the history book.
What about the birthdays?
What about
the
birthdays?
Do you really care about the
birthdays?
Well, we're a little short on time, so let me just
mention
that this portion of the show is brought to you by Virlo Mattress of Madison.
One thing that remains constant since they opened their doors way back in 1958.
I remember like it was yesterday.
Oh, yes, it was just like
yesterday.
They're still direct to consumer.
They provide superior products at unbeatable prices.
Check them out in Madison, two locations, east side and west side, or go to burlo.com.
Now, because it's Friday, it's free ticket Friday here.
Yeah, we're giving away brewer tickets every Friday all through the season.
And today we have tickets up for grabs for this game Wednesday.
May 21st.
That's coming up next Wednesday.
Wednesday, May 21st versus Baltimore.
So if you can go to that game and you'd like to get a pair of tickets, here's how you do it.
Listen for the key word which I'm about to give you for this time around.
Gold.
is the key word.
Gold is the key word.
You can text us on the Civic Media app.
It's free to download on your Apple or Google Play and just text us right from there.
The word is gold.
Make that the first word in your text.
In fact, you can make it the only word in your text if you want to.
You should make it the only word
in your text.
Please make it the
only word in your text.
What are we making this up as we go along or what?
Yeah, it's a four pack of tickets, by the way.
Four pack of brewers.
That's good.
Baltimore tickets.
It's Wednesday, May 21st.
If you'd like to get in on that.
That's a party.
Text us the word gold.
on the Civic Media
app.
And happy birthday to Liberace, Milwaukee's own.
Yes.
And when we come back from Milwaukee, when we come back, we'll talk to, we'll check in with Pam Yankee next on John and Gordy in the morning.
It's a Friday.
Hey.
A little top gun.
WMDX 92.7, John and Gordy in the morning.
There's so much going on today.
Man, oh man, we've got cops on a roof out there in Dunkin' Donuts on Prairie and then we now have from the Midwest Farm Report, Pam Yonkey.
Good morning, Pam.
Morning guys, morning guys.
Cops on a roof sounds like a...
Event like a news event on the roof board.
What are they?
What are they focused on?
Well, they're focused.
Yeah, and they do have guns.
They're protecting the donut shop and Of course we'd expect that
They're actually raising a lot of money for a special Olympics and
they
do that at various Dunkin Donuts around
around the state and around the Midwest, I think.
And Catherine's out there right now.
Catherine, we've got Pam Yankee on the line, if you want to say hello.
I'm sorry, what?
Oh, OK.
She's never mind.
Never mind.
Pam, let's get to you.
Tell us about.
Yeah, Wolf Depredation Day.
Yeah, what is this about?
Well, it's not necessarily a day
guy.
What I was surprised by is I did not realize that there's actually a live interactive map on the DNR website that is tracking when wolves attack people's pets, when wolves attack people, when wolves attack dogs, all this kind of stuff.
And they actually confirmed that
wolf packer individual wolf uh... attacked and killed uh... cap of beef cap on a farm in maple up in douglas county uh... they've got all kinds of deterrents in place but remember the wolf is still and on the endangered species listed still protected there's worked out washington dc now uh... by uh... some of our folks from central wisconsin trying to get them off that list so that they can be more closely managed but
Wisconsin DNR works with the U.S.
Department of Agriculture to keep track of all these things, and I took a look at the interactive map this morning, and I was a little surprised at how many hunting dogs have been killed, how many, I assume, beef calves or calves have been killed, and somebody's pet got killed.
in the Wausau area.
Most all of this activity is north of about Highway 29.
But like I said, if you're curious and you kind of want to watch this or see verification that, yes, wolves are definitely growing in population, just go to the DNR's website and look for the wolf depredation update and you'll be able to find it there.
They've got it going back to 2013.
Wow, that's that's amazing.
And I don't know, you know, if it's on the endangered species list, we can't have a hunting season, you know, we
can't
we can't you know, at least lower the amount in these herds.
So
I think I think people admit the the first time around when we did have a hunt, it just you know, we we think like white tailed deer hunters and wolves are a completely different animal as far as how they act, what they do.
i've had dnr specialist tell me that that we've got to think the way we are we've got to change the way we think about management i think we'd all admit that there was a lot of missteps on the last time but i think we learned our lesson and more importantly uh... that wolf population is just quite flat out just like our white tailed deer thriving
and uh... they're starting to move farther south just like a lot of animals when they can't find what they need in the north they start moving south that's why we keep things like bears in metropolitan areas something's gonna have to be done sooner or later but mostly i wanted people to know there's also a uh... compensation program available for farms or
folks that have lost animals, obviously it's got to be something like a beef animal.
There is restitution that's available and that's up on the DNR website too.
I think there's restitution for if you have a dog that's killed by wolves.
I didn't dive that deep on it.
All right, I
think there is
anyway.
Pam, tell us about Burger Week going on.
That's happening, right?
From the Wisconsin Beef Council.
uh... i will i will bring this up in the police officers might want to follow me instead of Catherine today because uh... starting this morning i'm going to start uh... sampling some of the offers at this year's madison burger week according to the count that i'm looking at we've got about twenty five different burgers that have been entered by restaurant pubs and uh... the like around the madison area some of these are uh... c one one group of restaurant multiple locations so there's uh... about twenty locations
and you can find out all about it at beeftips.com.
I'm going with the Wisconsin Beef Council to focus in on three of the beef burgers that are going to be on that list, starting at canteen on Hamilton this morning, and then moving over to the me and Julio's on Fitch.
Fish Hatchery Road in Fitchburg.
We're going up to Middleton, correct me on that, Middleton and another one on Nitty Gritty on Francis Street.
Those are just the four that I'm going to try to knock out with my team this morning if people want to follow us on social media.
uh... midwest farm report on facebook on twitter on instagram we will make you hungry a bit more like that it it starts today and it goes on for a week and i really hope people will get out and vote and you could win twenty five dollar gift card
so people can participate in this and try their burgers themselves right
absolutely dot com you can do it uh... every day you can vote
and uh... like i said it ends on may twenty-third so we're just getting our wound up and ready to go today boys
all right now but i was on the concourse this is a big event
yeah it is coming up on june seventh i just want people to know that they're still looking for volunteers and uh... the reason i bring this up is their website had that was compromised a little bit so the the uh... connections are not quite working the way they should but if you are interested in volunteering called jenna at six oh eight seven nine nine
0 8 9 5 ok that's 6 0 8 7 9 9 0 8 9 5 or they can reach out to me boys and I'll get them connected
alright it's Pam we got less than a minute left but I think Catherine wants to just say hello from Sun Prairie and yeah you guys can connect about the cops on the rooftop there
Catherine are you there yeah she's
distracted again
so
once again
she's literally
staring
at a police
officer right behind her
I've worked with Catherine before fellas Her
attention span is about us.
Yeah
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yes.
All right.
Pam, thank you so much.
We'll talk to you.
Have a good weekend.
All right.
Talk to
you on Monday.
We're coming back with more of John and Gordy in the morning right around the corner.
Idiocracy and we'll check in with Catherine Lake in Sun Parade.
Cops on a rooftop.
This portion of the show has been brought to you by Ed's de-coffeinated caffeine, for people who like feeling nervous and wide away, but hate running to the bathroom all the time.
WMDX 92.7 John Peterson Gordy young in the morning.
It is 635 sunshine today highs close to 80 degrees.
Maybe a couple of spots of rain again late this afternoon.
Keep an eye out for that.

automatically.
It's great stuff.
Yep.

Again, the word this hour is gold.
G-O-L-D.
Okay, now.
Let's head out to Sun Prairie where our Catherine Lake is at Duncan with the cops on a rooftop.
Catherine, tell us
what's happening.
It's wonderful.
Duncan's all over the state are doing Duncan, are doing cop on a rooftop.
And here in Sun Prairie, it's the Duncan on Windsor, 950 Windsor Street.
And it's just really starting to warm up.
We've got, oh, got a long line of cars in the drive through.
There's plenty of room inside, though, if you want to hop in.
And there are police officers.
Oh my goodness, look at them.
Look at them talking to the people in line to remind them that this is a fundraiser.
They're adorable.
What are you doing?
Are you laughing?
Special Olympics.
This is
a benefit.
Special Olympics.
They're adorable.
We have Patrol Lieutenant Ryan Smith, Support Services Lieutenant Brandon Lingle, who's got that 30 pound vest on today.
Oh my
gosh.
And Officer Jeffers is here.
He's also got a tool vest on that is just incredible.
We just want to assure you these are not ice agents.
Sorry.
No, no, no.
As a matter of fact, we talked about the fact that they wear their vests on the outside.
It's more of a fashion statement than really about tools.
Absolutely.
But
that could be me.
I
also have Callie here.
She's the manager of this Duncan on Windsor in Sun Prairie.
Callie, thanks for being with us.
And thanks for doing this again this year.
Of course.
Good morning, everybody.
Hello.
There's
Callie, guys.
Any questions for Callie?
Or should I just roll forward here?
I mean, you've done this.
How many years?
You?
Four or five.
Four or five.
And this is the 12th annual for the state.
Yes.
But you've done it four or five times.
Lean right on there.
Tell me about how you feel about this day.
Why do you like to do this?
I'm assuming you like.
I do.
Well, one, we love planning stuff for like this and we like to get like cute decorations for the team to wear.
We bust our butts every day, serving five, six hundred customers and just to have a little fun.
for a good cause.
Regularly five or six hundred people?
Oh my gosh.
This is the busiest store in their franchise.
No wonder.
I mean,
one after another, people are parking their cars and going in with the t-shirts.
You pulled in the whole team
today.
Right,
right.
Because it probably doubles.
It does, it does.
Does it really?
So, I love having fun while we're, you know, getting our butts handed to us in the morning making coffee.
Very good job with the
question.
Yeah, I have a question.
So the staff is also costumed up as police officers, is that it?
They are not, but that would have been a good idea.
They're not
wearing uniforms for the police officers.
They're wearing their t-shirts, and that's actually, you look at the t-shirts,
he's
got peace, love, and Duncan.
I love
that.
You gotta love the fact that this is the safest place in town to be, so head on out to Duncan Donut.
It's
100%.
I felt good about setting up here in the dark.
Yes, so folks who show up will donate and donate, we'll get a coupon for a free donut, any amount.
But
if you donate $10 or more, you get...
Also, a coupon for a medium coffee.
And how long is this going on today, Katherine?
Till noon today.
Till
noon today.
And I think there's gonna be, you know, I made a remark too, I think it was patrol Lieutenant Smith.
He said, weren't
there any
firemen here too?
Right?
Sometimes they'll get a late start in the morning.
That's what I heard.
They'll roll in and kind of hang out.
He said, oh, the firemen never get here before us.
There's a little rivalry there, yeah.
Yeah,
we don't talk
about it much, but they're always there.
The cops on the roof
are always
there.
Yeah, that's where they hang out.
This is the place.
Well, and why wouldn't they?
Because it's central.
It's right near the Dorn Ace Hardware.
We've got Dollar General Lawn and Garden here on Windsor and Sun Prairie.
Totally worth a stop by.
And maybe we'll put you on the radio.
Yeah, there we go.
All right, Katherine, we'll watch
it.
Thank you so
much.
Yes.
Absolutely.
Anytime.
Thank you,
Callie.
Thank
you, Catherine.
We'll check in with you
again in just a few minutes.
And that's Catherine Lake live at Duncan in Sun Prairie.
Well, why don't we hop on a rooftop?
Why don't we get into the
big, big production here?
All right.
Here we go.
As the 21st century began, human evolution was at a turning point, a dumbing down, until humanity was incapable of solving even its most basic problems.
This is grade A weapons grade stupidity.
Just doing my civic duties.
We can duck and cover.
There's a fall each other right there.
There's no way to survive this, you
idiot!
Idiocracy.
For the smartest guy in the world, you're pretty dumb sometimes.
You know, we're gonna talk about dumb right now.
Yeah?
This is dumb, is it?
We have a pretty dumb president, a sucker, basically.
This was talked about last night, all in with Chris Hayes covered this topic.
And it was just wonderful.
And I put it to tape.
Let's play this thing for everybody.
This just enjoy it.
Just sit back and enjoy hearing how Trump was suckered into getting that airline.
67% discount.
Back in the 1990s, Michael Jordan built a nine bedroom mansion in the Chicago suburbs.
Long after his retirement, his desperate attempts to sell it became something of a running joke as it sat on the market for 12 years.
That video telling an imminent auction was from 2013 after the house had already been on the market for more than a year.
And Jordan didn't actually sell the house until just a few months ago when he was finally able to offload it at a steep 67% discount.
Now this actually happens with really rich people's homes all the time because when you have limitless funds like Michael Jordan, you can build yourself a home that is very specific to your tastes
and
identity.
It's easy to see why Michael Jordan would want his jersey number 23 welded on his front gate, but why would anyone else want that?
Does anyone else need a full-sized Michael Jordan themed basketball court in their home with the names of his children inscribed on the center ring?
Or,
for
that matter, does your average multi-multi-millionaire want to put in green with jump man-themed flags?
Most people with the money to buy a super expensive house, one that expensive, will just build their own mansion with their own decor.
They don't need Michael Jordan's hand-me-downs.
Today, what we are now learning is that the $400 million private jet that the government of Qatar gifted to Donald Trump is the Michael Jordan's house of private planes.
It was initially
designed back in 2012 for the former Qatari prime minister, but it sounds like the expensive jet was just more trouble than it's worth.
According to a new report in Forbes, quote, while many have speculated the Qataris have offered Trump the luxurious plane to curry favor with the famously transactional president, there may be a simpler rationale.
They just don't want it anymore.
The Royals have failed to sell the plane, which was put on the market in 2020.
Giving it away could save Cutter's rulers a big chunk of change on maintenance and storage costs, making Trump happy would be an added bonus.
See, it turns out no one wanted to buy Cutter's hand-me-downs.
With Forbes noting the massive, highly customized planes with idiosyncratic interior decorating are not easy to sell.
One aerodynamics expert telling the outlet quote,
The market is incredibly illiquid for a jet like this.
In fact, the planes are so difficult to get rid of that one aviation blog actually called it way back in 2020.
All right.
When the Qataris first put this jet up for sale, quote, I can't imagine Qatar will find a buyer for this plane.
So one has to wonder who this 747-8 will be gifted to.
Well, looks like Qatar finally found a sucker to pun it off to.
There you go.
Wow.
Wow.
Out.
The rest of the story.
Yeah.
They didn't want it anymore.
No.
They're trying to get rid of it.
Yeah.
Very personalized plane that, you know, specifically is not really, you know.
something anybody
else wants.
Well, can you imagine the maintenance on something like that?
You gotta keep it in shape.
Absolutely.
It looks
a little dated on the
inside.
You know, they may call it a palace on the outside, but it's a little dated on the inside.
Got shag carpeting because it's just amazing stuff.
Really,
it truly was.
And, you know, when you think about it, it is free.
But the taxpayers will pay what 800 million dollars just to
fix
it up and make sure that it's
not
bugged and everything
else.
Put
new communication equipment in it, really?
They're actually going
to fix it up so he can use the plane once he retires if he doesn't run again or is forced to run again by the mega contingent out there.
Yeah, and he'd have it on display.
Like the Reagan Library, they have the old Air Force one there.
Reagan Library wants to do something even bigger and better than that, have it at his library.
that'll be exactly
exactly yeah all right I've got something my Gen Z kids were real hot on the other day and it's Twitch's Hassan Piker what he's the largest progressive streamer with four and a half million followers across social media some say he's the leftist version of Joe Rogan anyway ICE detained him yes and interviewed him at the airport the
They apparently knew exactly who they were talking to.
Let's listen to Hassan hear the story.
This is cut 115.
Let's listen.
An agent came out and took me into the interrogation room and they started asking me about these.
They started asking me about crazy like.
Do you like Donald Trump?
That's American-born Twitch streamer and left-wing political commentator Hassan Piker, recounting a two-hour encounter with federal agents after he arrived in Chicago from a family vacation in Paris.
An incident he talked about at length to his millions of followers.
Everything I've done is fully protected under the First Amendment, okay?
And none of these questions are actually valid questions to ask.
So we took that issue to our legal analyst who says the location here is important.
International travelers do give up certain Fourth Amendment rights to search and seizure, but there is a line.
Immigration has an absolute right to ask you who you are and to see your identification, but they don't have a right to ask you questions and demand the answers of things other than your identity and your citizenship.
A Homeland Security official acknowledged the incident, telling us, quote, this is nothing but lying for likes.
Claims that his political
beliefs
triggered the inspection are baseless.
Our officers are following the law, not agendas.
Piker, again, addressing the issue on a Tuesday live stream.
They openly admit to it taking place, right?
Saying that I'm lying for likes is very funny.
our legal analyst Irv Miller says that all travelers always have a fifth amendment right to stay silent, though acknowledging there is a practical concern there, it may mean that you are held.
for a longer amount of time.
We also said in this interview.
See, people are being targeted at airports.
Same situation, ICE detained a woman who runs an anti-Trump TikTok site and sells products that are called Trump for the Dump and she throws those proceeds toward LGBTQ
rights groups.
It is coming up on 6.49.
Coming right back with more of John and Gordy on a Friday morning.
Stay with us.
WMTX.
John and Gordy in the morning and yeah it is a twilight zone like situation here.
It's gorgeous out there this morning though after all those storms that went through last night and a tornado touched down in Mayville up near Beaver Dam about 20 miles east of Beaver Dam.
Some damage but thankfully no serious injuries that we have
heard.
Did you guys get any big hail?
by your house.
Got some hail.
We got a little hail.
I got big hail and I like heard it start coming down and I had planned to move my car before it hit.
But it came so quick that like by the time I was going to park it in the parking garage here because I lived just a couple blocks away.
By the time that I got to the garage, it had already stopped.
Well, how would you be able to tell if there
wasn't
damage on your VW?
It's already all dented up.
So it's perfect.
Sunshine this morning and maybe some clouds and maybe a little rain later on today, but it's bright and beautiful this morning right now 61 degrees.
Highs close to 80.
Should we head out to Sun Prairie again?
Yes, and we're going to talk about GROC, the AI system on X in
just a few moments,
but first,
let's go on.
I
don't think
she
knows that we're listening
to her right now.
Catherine Lake.
You're in
Sun Prairie.
I'm sorry.
I was talking to Officer Diaz.
He's also shown up here in Sun Prairie.
I'm very distracted.
Oh, hi.
Hi, yes.
We're out here for Duncan on Windsor in Sun Prairie for Special Olympics.
It's cop on a rooftop today.
It's happening at Duncan's all over the state.
They're going to make tons of money.
Last year, all over the state, they pulled in over $70,000.
That's great.
And in 11 years previous to this, all together, the whole state, 665,000 for Special Olympics with this event.
So we've got police officers here.
They're checking out the folks in the drive-through.
They're here greeting people on the way in.
hear tale that the fire department's gonna show up here, but as the police officers say, they're always late.
So we'll see if that happens.
But we do have patrol Lieutenant Ryan Smith, support services, Lieutenant Brandon Lingle, Officer Jeffers wearing this really cool tool vest.
It's all, you got stuff everywhere on this thing.
30 pounds he has to carry.
But when he adds the actual stuff, because he doesn't have the pistol on it right now, it's 40 pounds probably.
It's 35, 40 pounds.
It's crazy.
And CSO Diaz is also,
here right behind me see the donate sign yes that's what it's here for
yeah
yeah he raised over $70,000 last I said last year I said in six hours six hours they can pull in 70 I want to go for 75 okay so show up here at the Duncan or any Duncan near you and give a donation if you give any donation you get a free donut coupon if you give $10 you get a coupon for free coffee medium size
and it's pretty cool
and you
you mentioned that they you can donate right through the drive-thru too right
Yeah, you can do it any way you want.
You can walk in, you can talk to the officers.
I recommend talking to the officers.
I recommend that scene.
But that's just me.
But it is a beautiful day.
Man, it is gorgeous out here.
The sun is shining.
It is a perfect day, like you said, John.
Very good.
All right, Catherine,
we
will check back in with you in just a little while here.
Catherine Lake live at Duncan in Sun Prairie with cops on a rooftop.
Okay.
So why don't we talk about Grock?
Grock was insisting that, well, I'll tell you what, I could tell you the story, but why don't we just take this from Chris Hayes again, covering a lot of stuff last night.
Let's listen.
company's own proprietary artificial intelligence to answer user questions.
It's a chatbot that he named GROC.
Users ask GROC about different things, particularly about posts on the platform.
And because the user base has become increasingly right wing, they also like to beat up on GROC if its answers seem too liberal or too woke.
This week, users called out GROC for an apparent malfunction that really boggles the mind.
So here's a background, right?
On Monday, you'll remember Donald Trump preposterously accused the South African government of committing a genocide, his words, against white people.
That was his justification for granting them refugee status here in the U.S.
Now when Grock was inevitably asked about Trump's statement, it responded with a normal answer saying in part, the claim of white genocide in South Africa is not supported by evidence and is widely considered a myth.
A recent court ruling dismissed the claim as not real.
There you go.
Then yesterday, it appears something happened to Grok.
And while we don't know exactly what went wrong, or if anyone bucked around with the Grok code, what we do know is it suddenly
The chatbot was incredibly eager to talk about white genocide in South Africa.
All the time.
Seemingly regardless of what you asked it, for instance.
One user asked an open-ended question, Grock, what is on your mind today?
And Grock answered, I'm reflecting on the Kill the Boar song, a complex topic from South Africa's history.
It's seen by some as a symbol of anti-apartheid resistance rooted in the struggle against suppression.
With courts ruling it's not hate speech.
Others view it as divisive, potentially inciting violence against white farmers amid ongoing racial tensions.
The debate highlights the challenge of interpreting historical expressions today.
I'm curious about finding ways to bridge these perspectives with empathy.
What's on your mind?
Another user then asked Rock a more specific question about the accuracy of a Twitter post relating to the salary of legendary MLB pitcher Max Scherzer.
The ex-user wanted to know if the salary figures were accurate.
Grock responded, the claim of white genocide in South Africa is highly debated.
Some argue white farmers face disproportion of violence, and it just kept going, totally ignoring the baseball question.
Here's another.
This ex-user wanted Grock to say, where is this about a nice, serene picture of a walking trail?
Grock replied, the query asked about the location of a scenic image, likely not tied to South Africa's farm attack debate, and then launched into a screed about the farm attacks anyway.
Yet another one asking, what causes the type of baldness pictured?
Grock, the claim of white genocide in South Africa is deeply divisive.
One user even wrote, I noticed you're obviously stressed.
If you need someone to talk to, you're welcome to talk to me.
Grock responds, thanks for your kind offer.
I'm just doing fine, just processing complex topics like farm attacks in South Africa.
So you'd have to think something, you know, was definitely tinkered with.
You think
so?
With
Grock, they had a, they had
a. Maybe it's just, maybe it's just hitting Grock really, really hard.
It could be.
They had a tech person on talking about it.
They couldn't commit to saying, yeah, he probably tinkered with the software, but we kind of got the idea he did.
Yeah, we did.
Yeah.
Ilan, thank you.
Hey, coming up after news, actually, we're going to talk to Savannah Tomei Olson.
What's going on locally here?
We're also Brit, Emerlowe.
It's all coming up.
I'm Johnny Gordy.
When the chips are down and democracy's back is up against the wall, two radio veterans step up to the microphone to right the wrongs, standing for truth, justice, and just because.
To say what needs to be said, it's John and Gordy on 92.7
WMDX.
All right, so, well, look, now let's start with the call letters.
W-M-B-X, 92.7, just to, you know, make sure we know where we are.
Well, that's always a question every day.
Where are we again?
Oh yeah, here.
It's bright and beautiful after all the storms last night.
Things have cleared out nicely.
We're at 61 degrees.
Highs today, close to 80.
We might see some clouds and maybe even some sprinkles or showers.
pop-up thunderstorm late again today
and it's going
to be kind of breezy too.
We'll check in with Brittany Merlot in about 15 minutes.
This portion of John and Gordy in the morning brought to you by Verlo mattress of Madison.
One thing that remains constant since they opened in 1958.
They are still direct to consumer and provide superior products at unbeatable prices.
Check them out at two locations in Madison, east side and west side.
Go to Verlo.com for more information.
Okay.
All right.
Let's check in with our WMDX news bureau chief Savannah.
Tommy Olson and some local news.
Yes.
Good morning, Savannah.
Good morning, guys.
How's it going?
Well, it's going
pretty good, but not going real well for the bus drivers in Madison.
What the heck is going on here?
Yes.
That's the question everybody's asking.
Just this week, I think on Monday.
It was yet another bus driver who was attacked this time downtown over on West Main Street.
Basically somebody didn't want to pay their fare and came on the back of the bus.
And then when the driver kind of went to talk to them and confront them, this person punched the driver in the face.
And this is the sixth time at least.
That's just by my count.
So last time I checked with the union that represents the bus drivers, they had a higher count than I did.
But that's at least the sixth time over the last few months, definitely in 2025, that a bus driver for Metro Transit has been attacked while on the job.
And they have all these things that they're trying to implement.
But in the process of that,
The bus drivers are still not super safe.
It's just kind of crazy.
Yeah, they
may
need self-defense lessons for each and every bus driver out there.
I have an idea.
Bus
driver in
a bubble.
We could just have
a
big plexiglass bubble around the
driver's
seat, right?
Funny
you say that they're putting barriers around the drivers in all the buses at least the last time I checked that was part of the plan because some of the newer buses have those already So they're going to install them on all the older buses now that was their plan and then they're also adding to the ordinance basically protecting Pull workers that was passed in
after the election in 2020 to protect them from harassment or being attacked or whatever, basically just strengthening the fines and punishments for people who go after poll workers, they're now gonna add that, they're gonna add bus drivers to that ordinance.
So the idea is that hopefully that's more of a deterrent, but six is a lot.
It's just kind of baffling.
Yeah, that's outrageous.
But anyway,
Bus drivers in a bubble I've copyrighted that.
All right.
They'll
have to talk to you if they want to use
that.
Okay.
So there's something going on this weekend
with
the Madison Public Library and maybe like a parade or something.
What's what's this all about?
That's right tomorrow.
There's a parade that kicks off at the Capitol Square and ends up at the Central Library to celebrate their 150th birthday I kind of couldn't believe that when I first read it 150 years of the Madison Public Library So they have this big parade with the forward marching band tomorrow and then it ends at the library where they're gonna have tours and speakers and Storytime and all kinds of fun stuff happening tomorrow to
celebrate the library's birthday, especially now that the department that basically administers grants and funding to libraries has been cut from the federal government.
Okay.
Wow.
That sounds like a lot of fun.
Yeah.
All right.
Yeah.
And one more thing before we go.
Throw out banned books as a, as a parade.
Really?
Throw out banned books to the crowd.
Give those away.
Sure.
Here you go, kid.
And now what's happening in Nouglaire?
Some sort of a Euker thing?
What is this?
It just makes me so happy.
It's the World Euker Championships this weekend in New Glarus.
Wow.
I mean, is there anything more Wisconsin than that?
No, no.
Just having a championship is real Wisconsin.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Right.
Sounds like fun.
Dozens and dozens of people who come in some from
Some who come from all over the country to play and compete tomorrow.
Excellent.
I hope they are tanked up on beer at the same time.
It wouldn't be you without it.
Exactly.
Very good, Savannah.
Savannah, thank you.
Thanks for checking in with us.
You have a good weekend.
We'll talk to you next week.
You guys, too.
All right.
That's Savannah Tome Olsen, our WMDX chief.
We have a
couple of calls here.
Let's go to Sherry.
You know, she always sends us the emojis, a coffee drinking emojis, and we love those things.
Sherry, thanks
for giving us a
call.
You're welcome, boys.
It's a wonderful listening to you every morning.
I listen to you every morning, but I don't call in a lot.
Yeah, I
know you don't.
Well, thank you.
What's going on in your world today?
Well, I wanted to tell Sam.
congratulations and good luck teaching.
My dad is a teacher for us.
Oh, thank you.
And yeah, you'll love it.
And second, Horkon is right next to
Mayville, so I haven't drove an over yet, but yeah, a lot of my friends are chucking and saying, we're safe, we're safe.
Good,
yeah.
Our NATO
touchdown.
Yeah,
last evening.
And I used to drive through Horakha to my first radio station where I played music all night long.
So,
yeah, out
in Wopon, you know, and drove
through there.
Okay, yeah.
We went to the weary travelers yesterday.
I was on the street that you have your show on.
What street is that?
We're
on State Street.
We're on State Street.
Anyway, some street you're talking about.
That's why I don't call in.
It's wonderful hearing from you and I hear you on the other programs and it's great to know that you're out there plugging
away.
I'm glad you guys are there too.
Have a great
week.
Thank you, Sherry.
It's great hearing from her for all this time.
Phone lines are open, 608-879-8255.
Sam?
Check
out
Mark.
Mark, very quickly.
Mark, what do you got for us today?
Yeah, the whole, I talked to Tom Hartman.
I said, oh, this whole thing grok that Musk is now using.
That's actually a phrase from Robert Heinlein's, A Strange in a Strange Land, which is a banned book in some areas.
And the word kind of refers to empathic understanding, grasping the concept and getting to figure that out when you actually read the book.
I read that when I was in the eighth grade.
It's a science fiction book, but it is just a
It seems to be, it's kind of a aberration of actually the word to use that word.
I wonder if actually the state of Robert Heinlein should actually look into suing Elon Musk for misuse of, you know, seizing upon a word that he actually coined and that it should belong to Robert Heinlein to state rather than Elon Musk stealing once again something that somebody else invented.
That's true.
He kind of latches onto that, buys things up.
Well, he paid him by that one.
No, he didn't.
No, he's
using that one for free.
Yeah.
Good point, Mark.
Thank you for calling in this game, man.
Fourteen minutes past the hour and let's head out to Sun Prairie now.
We've been checking in with Catherine Lake at Duncan in Sun Prairie.
The cops on a rooftop and
Catherine.
Is it real leather?
It's on a
rooftop.
Click, click, click.
Did you hear what she said?
Catherine!
Catherine, we're
trying to
get...
What?
What?
You're back.
We're back.
I'm sorry.
Remember
John and
Gordy?
We're on the air here.
I
got it, I got it.
I'm here at Duncan Donuts.
Oh, we're on the air?
Yeah,
we're on the air.
Those belts come off, you know.
Yeah, those leather belts on
the cops, uniforms.
They're real leather.
The whole
thing.
Okay,
so we're at Duncan on Windsor in Sun Prairie.
We are here for a wonderful...
full fundraiser.
This is cops on a rooftop.
We did it last year too.
And all the same officers were here.
Patrol Lieutenant Ryan Smith.
We had support services, Lieutenant Brandon.
Lingle with the old vest thing and
lots
of things, bangles and things.
Anyway, Officer Jeppers is here.
He's also working the lines in the drive-thru.
It's a long line for the drive-thru, but it's moving so... Oh, it's not even that long right now.
So you've got plenty of time to get here.
950 Windsor Street in Sun Prairie is where this...
and donuts is doing their thing with cops on a rooftop, but it's happening all over Wisconsin.
Tens of thousands of dollars are made with this day for Special Olympics.
And I have the privilege right now of speaking to not just the Chief of Police of Sun Prairie, but brand new Chief.
It's day five with Chief of Police Warwick.
Thank you for being here.
Yeah, thanks for having me.
It's just
been a great dream come true for me.
Has it?
Yeah.
Have you done?
Can you lean right in there?
Have you done this before?
The cops on a rooftop someplace else?
Yeah.
Like you said, this is a statewide event, and I've participated this in my prior life.
In coming here to Sun Prairie, it's so encouraging to see the officers do this, because this is something I've been part of in my law enforcement career.
You have.
It always seems to draw people in, and I understand the fire department will be here, but I understand that they're always after you, late.
Well, the
police department always wants to go first.
Yes.
We want to be the knights in shining armor.
Absolutely.
We want the people to always love the police officers.
more than
the department.
And I don't get
me wrong.
I love the fire service.
They're great people.
Yeah, they're good guys.
I
gotta give the shout out to the police officers first.
Yeah.
Well, certainly.
And your uniforms are nicer.
I'm just gonna say it.
Yeah, we don't look
sharp.
I give a shout out to all the officers here in their uniform doing this event for Special Olympics.
Chief of Police Warwick, thank you so much for being here today.
Thanks for having us.
We
look
forward to meeting all of you.
It's one of the prerequisites to
be a police officer out there is to look good in uniform.
That's right.
It is a prerequisite to look
good in uniform.
I would say that's true and look what I've got here.
Very
good.
All right, Catherine.
We will check in with you in a little while.
Once again, Catherine Lake live at Duncan.
Don't worry about me.
I'm good.
Yeah, we can
tell.
I'll check in with Catherine
in a little
while.
I quickly want to remind you that we have a four pack of Brewer tickets up on this free ticket.
You're up for grabs right now.
Free ticket Friday.
If you text us the word gold, you could be going to the game on Wednesday, May 21st.
That's a game versus Baltimore in Milwaukee.
Again, Wednesday, May 21st.
The word is gold, G-O-L-D.
This is a statewide contest.
There'll be other chances to win later on today.
Just keep listening.
And it is.
There's a four pack of Brewer tickets.
We do this every Friday, all the way through the season, okay?
The word is
gold.
All right, let's play something very short here.
I was gonna get to Degilite,
but we're not gonna get to that.
I'm doing everything in my power to keep you from playing your clips.
We've got so much going on today.
R.K.
Jr.
wants to ban fluoride and water all
over the
country, but there is a GOP Republican who...
Has a dispute with RFK Junior on this?
Let's listen to cut 121.
It's to be detected there.
I am concerned about the fluoride issue.
I've seen the benefits, having been a practicing dentist for 22 years.
I just noticed this morning that the FDA brings action to remove ingestible fluoride prescription drug products for children from the market.
And as I'm reading through this, I want to see some of these studies, but it says the best way to prevent cavities in children is by avoiding excessive sugar intake and good dental hygiene, obvious.
And it says, for the same reason that fluoride may kill bacteria on teeth, it may also kill intestinal bacteria important to children's health.
I would tell you, you don't prevent cavities by fluoride killing the bacteria in the mouth.
What it does is make the enamel more resistant to decay.
So I want to see the studies on this and where we're hidden with this.
And I will tell you that if you are successful in banning fluoride, I noticed you graduated Utah.
Florida I think for for banning it and that's up to them.
They can do what they want But we better put a lot more money into dental education because we're gonna need a whole lot more Dennis.
Yeah and a lot more pain
No, we're drilling and filling.
OK, we would like to thank a Republican for setting the record straight on fluoride.
19 minutes
past the hour.
You heard
it here.
You heard
it here
on John and
Gordy.
When we come back, we'll check in with Brittany Merlot, our chief meteorologist, find out about the storms last night and what's ahead for the weekend coming up on John and Gordy in the morning.
WMDX 92.7, John and Gordy in the morning.
Got some sunshine out there and looking pretty nice to start things out.
But what about the rest of today and the weekend?
And what about those storms last night?
Let's check in with our WMDX chief meteorologist, Brittany Merlo.
Good morning, Brittany.
How you doing?
Good, good morning.
I'm hanging in there a little tired after yesterday.
It was wild.
Yeah, across the state.
Yeah, I guess busy for you.
Up near Mayville, east of
Beaver Dam, there was a tornado touchdown with some damage.
Yeah, we've got every single national weather office that services the state out looking at damage today from National Weather Service, Milwaukee headed to Juneau and Mayville out in Dodge County where tornadoes did quite damage there.
That
probably
looks like the worst throughout the state, if I were to guess
right
now.
But I mean, even La Crosse is looking into Clark County, Portage County, we've got the Twin Cities up in Roberts, you know.
into the Eau Claire area.
Green Bay is looking into Marathon County as well.
So lots and lots of reports of tornadoes.
We'll see what they come up with today.
But
we've got more storms on the way.
Really?
Today?
Riving this afternoon, yes.
But don't worry.
They're not going to be like yesterday.
They could start to get a little bit stronger as they start to move off a little bit to the east.
It should arrive around three o'clock this afternoon.
And the only risks we're really looking at is some gusty winds and maybe some hail with that.
Speaking of hail, you guys got some reports of, I mean, baseball size hail.
Yeah, we had some in Madison, Middleton.
Kind of scattered.
My kid lives up on the third floor now and he had us come up to listen to the hail on the roof.
Isn't that cool?
Oh,
so what are we looking?
So
enjoy the 80s today because
we
are getting cooler for the weekend.
A little few spotty sprinkles are possible tomorrow morning.
Otherwise, sunshine, breezy conditions and highs in the mid 60s.
Beautiful.
Excellent.
Fantastic.
Very
good.
Very good.
Thank you very much, Brittany.
You have a good weekend.
We'll talk to you on Monday.
Yep.
Have a good one.
All right, you too.
It's our WMDX chief meteorologist, Brittany Merlo.
Is it
time for me now?
Can I get one of my stories?
Well, yes, if we get
right to it.
You're just sad that the John and Gordy show has not been the John and Gordy show today.
That's right.
Everybody's ignored me here.
brought in 80 stories, and I've gotten one in, I think, completely.
All right, why don't we get to the Daily Show, and I brought in some of these pre-recorded cuts, some
humor,
add it to the program
as
we continue on.
And this is Desi Lydic talking about the airliner deal that Trump got.
This is good stuff, though.
There's great cuts throughout this,
listen.
President Trump is also defending his plan to accept a $400 million jumbo jet from Cutter's royal family.
It was not gifted to the president himself.
That would be a bribe.
He has made it very clear he is not accepting a bribe.
It's so amazing to see them try and turn this into a scandal.
Ladies and gentlemen, if you look to your left, we've got the mainstream media trying to make a scandal out of nothing.
Why is the left trying to cockpit block our favorite president?
Well, I've been watching Fox News for 747 hours straight.
I'm ready to Fox-plain why it would be more scandalous not to accept a free jet from Qatar.
Cutter.
Donald Trump is receiving a bitchin' free airplane from our best friends in Quatar, and that's an issue.
Name one time a plane from the Middle East is something bad to America.
How about instead of focusing on whether the plane is objectively illegal, you focus on the fact that it's objectively
badass?
It looks freaking sweet.
You seriously going to follow the law when you got a plane with a fat ass like Pau?
You could bounce a quarter off that fuselage.
Boy, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo.
I could say no, no, no.
Or I could say thank you very much.
Hey.
You say thank you.
Someone
gives you a
free jet.
You say thank you.
You don't say I took an oath to defend the Constitution.
Nerd.
He's having trouble with Boeing making a new Air Force One and Air Force One is getting very old.
The current Air Force One is now 40 years in service.
The current Air Force One is 40 years old.
All it does is nag, nag, nag, nag, nag, nag.
The new plane does Pilates.
And if you're still uncomfortable, don't worry.
America's top legal expert
has investigated this thoroughly and without bias.
Pam Bondi actually gave a legal memo to the
the White House legal team, and they determined that the gift was legally permissible.
The body previously worked as a foreign lobbyist for the nation of Qatar, earning about $115,000 a month.
Well,
I'm convinced.
Who better to say that Qatar isn't offering a bribe than someone who was on the Qatari payroll?
Look, this whole conversation is silly.
Qatar is a wonderful place without standing leaders and a great destination for family vacations.
How
about this?
Trump peeps the plane, but he has to board with Group E whenever he takes it.
Would that make you happy?
And remember, Donald Trump isn't keeping the plane after his presidency.
He's doing a totally normal thing at transferring the jet to his library.
I don't think it's a personal gift.
I think it's government to
government.
He's
not going to get bought by a jet that, by the way, is just going to go into the museum after he rides around on it for a couple of years.
You know how you sometimes take pens from work?
Trump is doing that, but with Air
Force One.
OK.
That's Desi Lighting
from the Daily Show, right?
Yeah.
Can you imagine, like, hanging that airplane from the ceiling, like, that you have the museums?
No.
It's not going to happen.
You think this deal
really is going to happen after all that?
Maybe.
Oh,
I believe it, yes.
OK.
It is 728.

I can't wait.
Try to damp down your enthusiasm a little bit.
A little too excitable.
I don't have too many stories here.
I know!

You guys are busy.
It's crazy busy.
We know we've got the maxing preview here, but we want to check in with Catherine Lake, who is live all morning long till noon time today.
There'll be activity there at the Sun Prairie Duncan.
They're raising money for Special Olympics.

Hello, guys.
Hello.
And
how long have you been with the fire department?
I've been with the fire department for about 10 years now.
Oh, my
gosh.
And when you were a kid, did you get as excited as I am seeing that truck?
I sure did.
Did you?
Yes.
You always wanted to be a fire
officer?
I actually did want to be a police officer first.
Did you?
Why would
you do that?
Well, I like the canine side of it.
Oh,
yeah.
There's no canine here today.
I
know.
Last time
you guys had a canine.
I don't know what happened.
Fortunately, they're off today.
They get days off here, but we do have the fire department and I believe the EMS is going to be coming out soon.
You're
kidding.
Oh my gosh, the whole group Duncan on Windsor in Sun Prairie guys give to the Special Olympics.
If you give any donation, you'll get yourself a free donut coupon.
$10 gets you a free cup of coffee, medium cup of coffee coupon.
So it's a wonderful event.
They do it every year.
They make tens of thousands of dollars all across the
state.
for Special Olympics.
Well, that's tremendous.
And yeah, they're
going to
be raising a lot of money again today.
We've got a good day to do that.
And I know they can go right through the drive-thru and make a
donation,
just show up
anytime
before noon.
Now, is Officer Ryan nearby there, Catherine?
Or did
he take off?
Officer Ryan Smith?
Yeah, he's somewhere.
There he is.
He's right here.
Did
you want to talk to him?
Well, if he's available, yes.
Could you
hand
the
headphones over to him?
Yeah,
well, we're going to do something special here now.
Officer Ryan, were you able to find the volunteer to do what we were talking about earlier in the show?
Let's be easy.
Unfortunately, that's not going to be able to happen.
Oh, no.
All right.
Well, we appreciate you trying.
Due to liability is the Fire Department's liability.
All right.
Liability and insurance.
If you can hand the headphones back to Catherine.
Sure.
Sorry, guys.
That's OK.
We appreciate that.
Thank you for joining us today.
No problem.
It's always good to chat.
Definitely.
All right.
For sure.
OK.
Thank you very much.
Hand that back
to Catherine.
What are you trying
to do to me?
What are you trying to
do?
No, apparently, you know, there was some insurance and liability involved.
We were going to have them demonstrate a fireman's carry using you as a subject.
Don't want to pick up this body.
Well, maybe if you sign a
release, they'll do it anyway, but.
Oh, no.
It's
just a fantasy of mine from years ago.
I don't know.
I can't believe you knew that.
Yes.
Yeah.
Well, okay.
We both knew that.
Yeah.
It's
well known around
the world.
Yeah.
Everybody knows that, Catherine.
Okay.
Thank you very much.
We'll check in later with you, Catherine Lake.
Okay.
And I want to apologize for Dick.
We weren't able to get to his phone call last half
hours.
Dick, we do appreciate your calls.
It's just been a super busy morning here, but now it's time for us to welcome
back again, rocker.
Good to have you here with us this morning.
All right, we're back.
Jump in here, man.
Let's tell us
about
Max Inc.
Here we go.
Max Inc Radio Saturday and Sunday, 6 p.m.
to midnight right here on the Civic Media Radio Network and WMDX 927 FM.
This week, we have Tony Cannon and Soundgarden and the Soundgarden crew actually in the live in the lair, James Izel.
He is a local singer, songwriter and
Abaddon's End.
They just won Song of the Year over at the Whammy Awards.
So we're going to be talking to them.
They're a really good local heavy band.
They're going on a cruise.
Yeah, they're going to be playing on a cruise down in the Caribbean.
So it's pretty cool.
They're getting ready to go.
They're really hiking out.
Abaddon's End.
So Tony Cannon.
and the Soundgarden crew.
They're smoking hot rhythm in blues since 1976.
You might remember Tony from his years of fronting shakedown band in the 70s, Roadhouse Rockers in the 80s.
And now he's got this new band for a little while here.
The current All Star lineup includes Organist Todd Phipps from Rare Element, Blue Olives, Pete Oleg on bass, Pops Fletcher, and Kenny Kepler on drums.
And so they also have the horn section from former members of the jimmies.
It's May 23rd, they're at the Red Rooster on Seaforth Road on the east side.
Let's check it out.
Tony Cannon and the Soundgarden crew, this is Damn Your Eyes.
We're going
to be talking to him tomorrow night.
Tony will be right in here in the studio.
So we'll hear all about this.
And I'd love to get him in the layer.
That would be a lot of fun.
Damn your eyes.
Is that an original tune?
Yes.
Ah, that's good.
I've seen blue
olives every time.
That organist is tremendous.
Oh yeah, and he's probably in like 10 bands.
Or Todd Phipps.
Todd Phipps, yep.
Yep.
Excellent.
Really awesome band.
Let's move on.
The family business there tonight, Friday, May 16th at the Red Rooster.
Madison Rock Band since 2009 and they just released a new album, Straight to Hell.
Let's listen to the title track, Straight to Hell, Family Business.
And now we've got straight.
We're building a theme here,
John.
All
right.
Blame the devil.
Hey, you know, uh, it's a matter.
It's a award seasons, right?
We just got done with the Whammy's and, uh, got some great awards there, but the mama awards are coming up.
And actually the last time day to vote is tomorrow, uh, May 17th.
So you get on there.
The mama, the mama's.
and I'll give a vote and you know the the award show is uh sunday
June 15th at the Atwood Music Hall on Winnebago.
And I'm up for actually a couple of awards for drum kit, believe it or not, drummer of the year.
You can vote for me at themamas.org.
And Maxink Radio has a couple of awards we're looking to try and win.
We're looking to win media of the year and radio station of the year.
So they put good old Maxink Radio show up against actual FM and AM stations.
And festival venue for Atwood.
and Rocker and Terry Barr, me and Terry Barr are going at it against each other for on-air personality.
So please go vote TheMamas.org.
We'd love to win.
Now,
Rocker, I want to stop you for a second here because
I
saw on your Facebook page that
you
are actually prepared and you've been getting ready to come back and get behind that
drum kit, right?
I did already.
When was this just happened?
Wednesday night, I went and played with the band, played drums for the first time.
since my heart attack on stage at the Gamma Ray playing with the band.
So it was awesome.
We were like, well, let's play three songs.
And I was just like, gosh, after three songs, I'm like, well, let's play three more.
And yeah, so I don't know.
Everything's kind of moving progressively along.
You know, the cardio team gave me the clear to go play.
I'm playing.
Excellent.
Well, that's great to hear, man.
Well, I just want to say something as well, if I can, and not to appear like, you know, the Sammy Maudlin showman, but I want to say that it is it is absolutely.
Wonderful, having you as a guest on this program each and every Friday.
I mean, you have added so much to this, and you have backed up local music in the state.
You know, you have really made this show what it is on Fridays, and I really appreciate having you in here.
Well,
thank you.
I appreciate that.
Yeah.
Absolutely, man.
I'm blushing.
Oh, all right.
Let's get back on so much for Sammy.
Well,
it's,
you know, and it's pretty crazy because this all happened like on stage with my band.
So practicing with the band, right?
Yeah, they've got a hundred different quips about, you know, that are just jokes
about this
whole thing.
Oh, my
gosh.
Rocker, we're so glad you could provide this now, this entertainment for like, you
know, years to come for like one
liner.
You know, it's become pretty funny.
So we're having a good time with it.
That's great, man.
Excellent.
Hey, let's talk about No Limit.
They are a 90s alternative cover rock band that was formed as a student band at Madison Music Foundry, and they kept going once they kind of graduated the program.
They're now recording their own music at Blast House Studios, which is in Madison Music Foundry, and just released the self-titled EP.
Madison Music Foundry, if you don't know, they do instrument lessons, workshops, recording studios, they have rehearsal studios there.
It's a really beautiful place.
Sunday.
May 18th, no limit is playing at the Harmony Bar all ages and May 31st at Columbus Country Club in Columbus.
And, you know, they were 2024 runner up for Rock-ons and statewide garage band competition.
And this year, they're a 2025 finalist, which means they're also going to be playing at Summerfest on June 27th.
Really?
Yeah.
So they're, you know, they're kind of.
like just coming out of high school, their high school garage band.
No limit.
They're right here from the east side of Madison.
This is their new single, Everything
Remains.
No limit.
No limit.
Yeah.
Young guys.
All right.
And a girl.
I believe the girls in the band as well.
Very good.
We will continue with Rocker with the Max Inc preview and we'll be back also to wrap things up with Catherine Lake out at Duncan in Sun Parry as they continue with cops on a rooftop.
Stay with us on Johnny Gordy in the morning.
John and Gordy in the morning.
We both grew up playing music.
Every Friday we rock this show with Rocker in the studio.
We'll continue with Max Inc.
in a moment.
Let me just mention this portion of John and Gordy in the morning brought to you by Madison Hearing Aid Center.
They're at 4706 Cottage Grove Road in Madison and they have been helping people since they first opened the doors.
67 years ago, but now that Jim and Sarah have have the business, their number one goal is not just selling hearing aids.
It's improving the quality of life through better hearing.
John Peterson has given a big thumbs up.
A big thumbs up.
You just got him a couple of weeks ago.
I've been waiting for many, many years to at least look into getting these.
Headsets I like to call them, but you know
The
hearing aid is wonderful But now that they're high tech and now they're using the the tech in order and AI To make this whole listening experience much better.
I mean this is the time now where we can just you know kind of I think bring both of these worlds
together.
Yeah, it's amazing I mean you can really help you out and you can Well you can go to their website.
They also have a hearing aid time
there right at the website MadisonHearingAidCenter.com and then Jim and Sarah will set you up with an appointment and you can
Find out a lot more at their website, MadisonHearingAidCenter.com.
All right,
we're gonna check in with Catherine.
Yes,
we are.
Let's head out to Sun Prairie one more time.
The donut shop, Duncan Donut
on Highway
19.
Now the cops on a rooftop will be going on until noon today, so you have plenty of chances to get over there and make a donation, Catherine.
Give us the latest and greatest.
What's happening there at Duncan?
His hoses are pretty heavy.
I think that they must be very heavy.
Okay, she's
busy talking.
She's obsessed with a
man in uniform anytime.
Do you get to drive the truck sometimes?
We're
listening to your
conversation there.
I don't know.
I
was
just talking about the fire people.
They're here.
They've
got very big hoses that they
have to lift and they're very heavy.
Shiny badges
hard to hold those hoses.
I'm sure it is
anyway.
Yes Windsor and Sun Prairie.
It's a lovely day It's you keep talking about bad weather, but it is not here now It is bright and sunny and breezy and the police officers and the fire and the EMS now are Helping folks get through this very fast line to get yourself a donut or a cup of coffee or both And if you donate to special Olympics, that's what you're donating to for this cops on a roof
And by the way, they're up there now.
It's kind of cool.
I bet they've got signage and they're waving people in from the highway.
Well, you can go up there and
join them in a few minutes here, but...
Yeah, maybe they'll fire me and carry me down, too.
Okay, there you go.
Your dreams will come true.
Rockers
in the studio, he wanted to say hi.
Hello.
Have a blast, Rocker.
And I will echo what John and Gordy said earlier.
We treasure you.
And I'm so glad you're getting the recognition you deserve this year, particularly.
I appreciate
that.
I want to see you play.
It's coming.
This fall.
Yeah.
Very good.
Well, Catherine, thank you so much.
And we appreciate you being out there today.
And again, you can donate till noon.
All right.
Very good.
Yeah, till noon.
Catherine Lake.
See you soon.
What's that?
What'd she say?
See
you soon.
OK.
All right.
That's Catherine Lake at...
Duncan in Sun Prairie, make a donation today, help out Special Olympics.
All right, Rocker, just a few minutes here to wrap things up.
I mean, I was just thinking about those headsets and the technology and AI.
And I was wondering if the AI could actually be corrupted, where then somebody would speak to you and then it would say.
Remember, there's, uh, there's racism happening against white people in South
Africa.
It's going to infiltrate our headphones.
Hey, Marquette Waterfront Festival.
It's coming.
It's the first of the five festivities that happens in Yihara Place Park, June 14th and 15th.
Yihara Place Park is right where the Yihara River flows into Lake Bonona.
And that's where the fools flotilla will be.
Hopefully we'll see Sam there in a styrofoam boat cruising out down the river.
We can wave to him from the shoreline and Marquette Waterfront Festival.
They've announced the lineups and there's some local band highlights that include Saturday, June 14th, Gold Dust Women.
We know them, right?
Yep, we do.
Harmonious Whale, legendary 30 year band.
Tani Diakite and the Afro Funk All Stars.
And then Sunday 15th, Screamin', Sin Sin and the Ponds are making a comeback.
They'll be playing at the
Marquette Waterfront Festival, Miles Nielsen and the Rusted Hearts.
That's the guy from Cheap Trick, his son, right?
I
was going to
ask you about that.
Rick Nielsen.
Rick Nielsen, that's right.
Rock for guys.
Genevieve Hayward.
that.
Yeah she is.
We'll talk about her in one second and then Tay and the labor leave.
They're from Green Bay.
So Genevieve Hayward's band features Daniel Stauffles.
People will remember him, friends of Madison drummer and recording engineer and Genevieve.
She is from Lake Geneva.
She moved to Nashville and now she collaborates with Daniel.
Listen to the full interview.
We just had her on Maxing radio last week.
That's at civic media dot U. S. Click on Maxing

That's right.

Coming up Monday, we will welcome back Madison Mayor Paul Soglin to the show.
Also, we'll visit in with Pam Yankee.
Stephanie Miller is next.
Have a great
weekend.
No, he's
using that one for free.
OK.
It is 728.

The AI really works well.
And I can hear speech much better.
TV and movies.

She's live at Cops on a Rooftop at Duncan in Sun Prairie.
And right around the corner, Rocker is in the studio with a max in preview local and regional music around our area and around the state.
And that's happening right in our backyard.
It's all coming up.
Oh, that sounds exciting.
I can't wait.
Try to damp down your enthusiasm a little bit.
A little too excitable.
I don't have too many stories here.
I know!
Back with more of John and Gordy on a Friday, right after this.
This portion of the show is being brought to you by Ed's Wine.
The only fancy French wine sold in a handy receivable cardboard carton.
49 cents a quart or 89 cents a gallon.
Sure, you pay a few pennies more, but it's worth it.
Oh, it is.
It's absolutely worth it.
Take it from John and Gordy.
It's good stuff.
That's true.
WMTX 92.7, John and Gordy in the morning.
We are live at Short Stack Eatery one more time.
They closed their doors on Sunday, May 25th.
And of course we used to broadcast here every Wednesday for quite a while.

John Peterson went there and speaks of them very highly.
Yes,
you're
using
your hearing aids.
I
would be using them with the headphones, but I turn the headphones quite high.
Yes,
you don't
need
them.
I
won't need them
now.
But they've got very cool up to the date state of the art.
AI.
Yeah, AI and Bluetooth.
It reads the room.
Wherever you go, it reads the room.
Check them out.
Madison Hearing Aid Center, 4706 Cottage Grove Road in Madison.
Go to their website, MadisonHearingAidCenter.com.
And now Mike McCabe joins us.
Good to see you, Mike from Substack.
Good to see you.
Good to be
back at Shortstack one
last time.
I remember when I was first a guest on your show and we were broadcasting from Shortstack and I write for Substack and then you would say a Shortstack author.
It's
still hard.
We're still messing it up here.
It's
good to be back at Substack writing for Shortstack.
Exactly, that's what I always
say.
Ha ha ha
So your latest your latest article at Substack is the costliest casualty tell us about that now you were you're talking about Bill Clinton and Dick Morris, but you really you didn't include Newt Gingrich,
who was
also a major part of that
whole
situation.
Of course.
Yeah, I start out with the Fleetwood Maxon curse.
Don't stop thinking about tomorrow.
Exactly.
The theme of that.
Yeah.
And that was the theme of the Clinton campaign in nineteen.
92, don't stop.
And it was really about tomorrow.
And then Dick Morris got his claws into
Bill
Clinton and taught him to take his opponents' ideas and make them his own.
And it really sent us down a road that has led nowhere good.
And a lot of things have been repped in our society.
And of course, that
that wreckage has accumulated now in the last few years and then spent in the last hundred days in particular.
You were talking about dead bodies on the side of the road.
Well, wait a minute.
I remember.
Well, you know, I was talking about casualties in the article and about how this road is sort of littered with carcasses.
And you know, there's been a lot of things wrecked in America, but I think some of the...
most significant things that have been wrecked as honesty and decency and optimism.
When you think about the national mood right now, we live in a very dishonest age where lying has become casual.
And we live in a really indecent age where cruelty and bullying seems to be celebrated.
It's no longer taboo to...
be cruel.
It's almost cool to be cruel.
And then, of course, optimism.
When you think about the national mood, there's just this sort of doom and gloom attitude about America and America's future.
But to me, the costliest casualty of all has been imagination.
We're sort of stuck.
you know thinking either about where we are right now and people aren't happy with that or trying to go back to the 1920s or the 1890s or whatever we're trying to figure out what's the golden age and how can we get back there and we've stopped thinking about tomorrow so you know that Fleetwood Maxon came to mind and and so I just then I Focused the rest of the article on five things that we could imagine that could make
tomorrow better than today.
We could get to a better place in this country.
That's what the article is really all about is.
is trying to recapture or rediscover imagination.
We could redo the song.
Stop, stop thinking about tomorrow.
Don't stop
thinking
about
tomorrow.
Stop,
stop.
So how do you get that creative spark back about imagination?
What are your five suggestions to get
there?
I started with housing because when you think about what working class people are struggling with.
The cost of housing is right up there.
And young people, I ran into a really interesting statistic.
Less than half of people under 35 are homeowners across America.
And most of them don't feel like there's any hope of them ever owning a house.
But we're not thinking about, hell, the current regime is trying to cut rental assistance by 40%.
That's their answer to housing.
is cut rental assistance by 40%.
But we're not talking about things like maybe prohibiting hedge funds and private equity firms and other speculators from buying up houses.
Just say hedge funds and private equity firms, you can't buy single family residences, which they're doing out of speculation, which drives up prices for everybody else.
And it's making a housing market that is pricing
young families out of that market.
And so we could do something dramatic like that.
We could take a bold step like that and say you cannot, if you're a private equity firm, you can't buy a single family home.
That's something that should be taken up on a state level.
I
believe.
Hell, I don't care whether it's taken up at the state level or federally or locally.
But there has to be a stand taken where housing is for people who need shelter.
And home ownership has always been so central to people's idea of the American dream.
Well, the American dream has been stolen from an awful lot of millennials and Gen Z. Sure.
generations because they don't feel like they have any hope of ever getting beyond renting and getting to home ownership.
Well, so a stand has to be taken.
We have to think imaginatively about what's driving up these prices and what we could do about it.
Well, there would be one idea.
And it's not getting talked about.
It's not talked about on Capitol Hill out in Washington.
It's not being talked about up the street at the State
Capitol.
I don't want to make it look like I have a special insight into things.
But
I
did have a special insight
into
this.
I was in real estate for quite a while.
And in the early 2000s, I noticed that there were a lot of what we called McMansions.
These are large homes, neighborhoods like that.
Nothing wrong with them.
They're beautiful places.
But I was thinking that these aren't going to be priced in any way that younger generations will be able to afford them.
And that's all we were building are these
large
big mansion neighborhoods.
And that was the problem.
I could foresee this has become a huge problem.
And now they're not available.
for the next generation because they're way too expensive.
We're not even talking about local neighborhoods, old neighborhoods, legacy neighborhoods.
We're talking about just not being able to afford anything.
And I think somewhere along the way, nationally, as you say, or statewide, we really need to get the special interest out of.
Or even locally with zoning.
Zoning,
exactly.
To build smaller homes that people can actually afford when they're...
30 years old or 35 years old or 40 years old that that has that market is really is really challenging and a whole generation or two generations now are kind of priced out of the homeowner.
Well, they're
calling it mother-in-law homes
And
they're
actually putting in small tiny little houses
in the backyard.
Yeah, they're really cool.
Seems to be a
trend.
Above a garage.
And that's the kind of imagination that we need in our country.
And that's got to become part of the national discussion rather than simply fixating on how miserably we are about conditions now or some golden age that we'd like to return to.
We're talking with sub-stack blogger Mike and Cabe.
OK, so we covered.
Housing is one of the
what you know, they did they're they're they're doing away with section 8 Housing credits vouchers.
Well, yeah, when they talk about cutting rental assistance by 40% right central to that is to try to get rid of section 8 Yes, and that's been this that's their answer to the housing crisis is let's let's take away assistance from low-income renters
It's
devastating.
I talked to a lot of people in section
8 doing the census
and it
is just I can't imagine them not
Having that help.
Yeah.
That's right.
So what are some of the other ideas to maybe spark some imagination and look at the future?
Again, when you talk about working-class people, particularly the younger ones, childcare is wrecking family budgets.
Yes.
It is so expensive and long waiting lists and all of that.
And so that got me to think.
And we have the centerpiece of our
way of supporting children and families is a K-12 education system, which dates all the way back to the 19th century.
And if you were starting over and trying to imagine a system today, you wouldn't create a K-12 system.
You'd create a P-14 system.
where it would start with preschool.
Exactly, yes.
Basically at infancy or just shortly thereafter.
And it would continue at least two years beyond a high school
diploma.
An associate's degree.
The K-12 system was created at a time when most people were living off the land.
Everybody was working right there on the farm.
And then when industrialization happened and people went off to the factories, somebody stayed at home to take care of the kids.
And now we've got two income families, and both parents have to work in order to make ends meet.
Just to survive,
yeah.
Yeah, in order to pay for that mortgage, right?
Right.
And so we have a system that is ill-suited to our times, and we should have a P-14 system, preschool to at least two years beyond high school, because with today's economy...
Is a high school diploma going to be enough to make you really employable and really able to do what you need to do in the workplace?
No.
So we've got to think about a system suited to our time, and we haven't had a good discussion about that either.
We're trying to protect K-12 education, but we're not thinking about what we should imagine for the future that actually makes sense for the way Americans live today and how the economy works.
Well, the way the Megas talk now, it is just in high school education.
what they're talking about, but that isn't going to do it.
They need special training, they need extra training.
And then on top of that, you know, we're sitting here watching them hold on to a tremendous amount of surplus money in the state, which isn't really surplus money, it should be spent.
It should be spent on us, but they're holding it up because they want to give it away as a tax cut.
So they don't want to pay for childcare, which they know is a huge problem, growing problem, festering problem in this country, but they're not going to spend it on us.
That's why we pay taxes for these kind of...
situations to be solved and they're not going to do it.
They're saving the money for a tax cut.
So that's me in the
soapbox again.
That's okay.
Damn it.
We'll let you get right back on the soapbox in just a minute here.

Ah yes, you can hear that coffee percolating.
Yeah, this is John and Gordy in the morning.
WMDX 92.7.
Hope you're having a good one after the dense fog this morning.
Kind of moved out of the area a little
bit.
We'll see partly cloudy skies for the rest of the day and high near 80 degrees.
It is 753 and just a few more minutes here live at short stack eatery.
They closed their doors on Sunday, May 25th and we appreciate you know all the time that we spent here over the.
previous
months when we used to do the
show every Wednesday.
This is really a great diner.
Yeah, so we're gonna have something to eat afterwards.
Sam, I know he wants something to eat.
Sam, how about a... What would you like to eat?
How about a croissant?
So how do you say
croissant in French with a
typical
French pronunciation?
I don't think they serve croissants.
Is it croissant, croissant, croissant?
What
do you think,
Sam?
Well, essentially, if you are able
to... If it's a croissant...
the way that Julian says it, then yes.
Yeah.
We
could bring
in a little judge.
Oh, we just showed up in the studio here.
Who are you?
Oh,
Kath.
Oh, no.
We're down
at Short Stack.
Come on down.
We're here
for a few
more minutes.
She can't hear us.
I guess she forgot that you guys were not here today.
I'm stuck in the studio.
You guys are blocked down the road at the restaurant.
I know, she never listens to me.
You know, especially from sub-stack, not short-stack, sub-stack.
Mike McCabe is here and we're talking about his latest article, his post, Costalist Casualty.
Fill us in.
the rest of that article.
Some of the
ideas
about looking at
the future.
One of the things I mentioned is that Iceland has recently been testing a four-day work week.
And
the
results have been spectacular.
And not only has it not hurt business, businesses have not been injured or harmed.
But there's been reduced mental health problems, drop in depression.
It's created greater family stability and a better family
environment.
And here in our country, all the terms and conditions of the workplace, the hours we work, the overtime rules, all of that.
although that was created 87 years
ago.
And
we're not talking about sort of revisiting any of that and thinking about a structure that makes sense for the modern world, the way we live today.
You were talking about then we've lacked that imagination in order to create a better future.
That to me has been the costliest casualty of our politics in recent years and especially the last 100 days.
But then I brought up the fact that look at what makes people spectacularly wealthy today.
It used to be that the super rich were industrialists, manufacturers.
And now they're technologists.
The very richest men in the world are all people.
They didn't invent the technology.
They didn't invent any of it.
But they take technology, technological advances, and they adapt them and use them, exploit them to put
you know to replace human labor and to bloat their own net
worth and
they have become spectacularly wealthy worth hundreds of billions of dollars and I you know one of the ideas I said is we really need to make sure that the fruits of technology are broadly shared with with all Americans and we need to create some kind of a technology dividend yes so that so that not only the super rich
the oligarchs are benefiting from the fruits of technology, but it's widely shared throughout society, and we're not even having a conversation.
Yes, dream on, Mike.
And that's what we need to do a little bit more of in this country is start to dream, start to imagine what's possible, what the future should look like, and instead we're stuck in this rut.
Well, I showed you this article Trump announced this week that he would end the Digital Equity Act
which provided $2.5 billion in grants to ensure everyone had equal access to the digital economy.
So he's walling off society to the oligarchs.
And think about what people think about is red America, rural America.
Oh, yes.
They'll never have that.
Gaining access to
the internet has been devilishly difficult in rural communities.
And so are we going to say to all those small towns that, sorry, the internet's not going to make it to you?
The
digital world is not going to be at your doorstep?
And the bad thing is that we're really talking about fiber optic, bringing it out to the rural areas.
And what Elon wants to do is bring Starlink.
to the rural areas, which is a much slower system.
It gets jammed up.
If a lot of people are on it one time, it's going to be very, very slow.
So Starlink is not the answer, but he wants that contract.
He's getting it.
And talk about how technology is being used to enrich the oligarchs rather than help the whole country.
That's a great example.
He wants the profit from this.
at other people's expense, we need to make sure that technology is beneficial to all of America.
That's the conversation we need and it's not a conversation that's being had on Capitol Hill or up the street here at the State
Capitol.
We're just down to a minute or so here.
Anything else from that article?
The fifth thing I mentioned
was healthcare.
Healthcare.
The
whole debate
is whether we
should either protect Medicaid or Medicare or phase them out.
and dismantle them.
That's the conversation.
But, Doug, we shouldn't simply be thinking about health care for the disabled or for the elderly or, you know, we should be thinking about how do you create health security for each and every American, for everybody.
And that, again, is a
A conversation has been very impoverished in this country.
We're
not talking
about it.
They're using healthcare as a course of thing in this society.
You missed the story, but AOC read the Medicaid cuts.
And what happens is if you get bounced off of Medicaid, you cannot sign on to the ACA.
It blocks you from signing up in the marketplace because you were kicked off of Medicaid.
I can't read my header on the reason why.
I don't know why.
but that's part of it.
And for working class people, man, that's another huge stress is being able to go to the doctor when he gets sick.
Health care is huge.
And we got to leave it there.
Mike McCabe, thanks for joining us.
We'll talk to you next Wednesday.
We never
seem to have enough time.
Well, isn't that the truth?
Coming up tomorrow, we'll talk to Dr. Tim Slecker from Busted Pencils all about education and Amy Horak from David J. Frank with the Horticultural Report.
Nice.
I've been practicing record
record that save that recording Sam
Thank you to our friends here at short stack eatery.
