the hometown Houghton gremlins are going to take on the ishpaming westwood patriots coming in from ishpaming michigan jake condon filling in for jimmy young tonight and folks it should be a pretty exciting matchup two teams with pretty low records so far this season the gremlins started one and two patriots are still looking for their first win on the season but both these teams have faced a pretty tough schedule so far both of these teams trying to build up after a disappointing last season and two first year head coaches looking

to battle here at alumni field tonight should be an excellent game coming up in the next few minutes we're going to have coaches interviews from coach Eli Loma and coach Sam Gillis and we will be able to talk to them about what roster decisions they've had to make in the past couple weeks how they're adjusting to their first year as a head coach in the MHSAA system and what they're expecting from the opposing teams tonight so should be a fun one.

To start off, you're one and two so far this season.

You lost your first two games against very good teams in Calumet and Kingsford, but you won your home opener last week against Lons.

The final score on that one, 54 to 6.

Just going through the season so far,

Obviously, you kept it pretty close against a very solid Calumet team, but how does it feel to not your first career win as the head coach here

in coach?

Well, that feels amazing, really.

It's something that I wouldn't even have dreamed of it happening when I graduated from high school here.

For me to be a varsity coach and win a game at home,

I mean, it's a dream come true, really.

And talking about that a little bit more, this is your first year as the head coach for the Gremlins.

You spent a lot of time here as the junior varsity coach.

You were an assistant for the varsity program for a long time as well.

But what's it been like stepping into the varsity head coaching role, especially with a lot of the players that you've been coaching recently for our JV?

Yeah, it's been a pretty smooth process.

The kids, of course, it's been an easy transition for them.

And then the assistants that have been around on the varsity, they've been able to step in and they expanded their role.

So last year, he had Tim Driscoll, who's a coach with vast experience and he was able to do just about everything for coaches.

But now those guys who have been assistants, they stepped up, they took on a greater role.

So for me, it's been a really easy transition.

And

as far as, excuse me, the roster helping you with that transition, are there any key players that you think you're expecting to have a very sizable role over the course of the rest of the season?

Anybody that you're hoping to see break out in the near future here, just players in particular that you'd like to shout out and tell all listeners to keep an

eye or an ear on at least over the course of the game?

So one thing with that is we have seven seniors who are backs or receivers.

All seven of them scored a touchdown last week.

And out of those seven, I mean, each one of them could step up and be the big player that week.

Of course, Brody Donnelly, he's got the, he's the quarterback.

So the ball is in his hands every play and it's largely an option based offense.

So, I mean, if he wants, he's getting the ball every play.

So obviously he's a name you're going to be hearing a lot.

But you got other players like Sam Roth.

I mean, I expect him to have monster games in here somewhere.

It's going to happen where he breaks through.

He's so dynamic with the ball in his hand.

But like I said, any one play, any one of those players can step up and score from anywhere on the

field.

Taking a look at this week's matchup, you've got Ishming Westwood coming in.

They're still looking for their first win of the season, but you've seen them a decent bit during your time as a JV coach, as far as the assistant.

What have you come to expect from the Patriots over those seasons, and what do you expect to see from them tonight?

So I would expect they're going to come out and they're going to be tough.

Ever since I first started, they were always tough, tough players.

They'll play hard.

What we got to do is just match that or exceed whatever energy that they're bringing, we got to bring it in more so.

And I think that we have the players to do that as far as their offense.

I mean, they're dynamic.

They got a bunch of things that they can do.

So we got to be ready for a bunch of things coming at us.

And finally, especially, again, as a first year head coach, I don't want to beat on that too much.

But this is a team that

Went two and seven last season, I believe your last postseason appearance was in 2022.

As you take over the head coaching role, as you try to get this team back into its winning ways, are there any key messages that you're trying to bring to the players or the rest of the staff here to try to establish a new winning

team culture back here in Houghton?

It's all about attitude from in practice, from Monday through Friday.

What are we doing?

What are we working on?

And what are we enjoying about football?

What we should enjoy and what these kids do enjoy is hitting, blocking, getting hit.

Just the physicality of the game.

They love it.

If we have a practice where we don't hit, I start getting complaints from the players like, hey, we need to hit more.

And I love that.

These kids are tough.

They love the fight and that's what's going to get us that and discipline.

So we can't just be meatheads out there.

We do have to have a little bit of thought going on in between the skull.

So if we are disciplined and we work hard, we're going to see us do a lot better.

And then we can start competing with a team like Calumet where the kids aren't that different between here and Calumet.

What they've done really well is they have effort and discipline and they execute what they do really well.

So really what we want to be is more like Calumet and then beat them.

Thank you for having me.

So starting out this is your first year as the head coach of the Patriots.

You were a graduate of Westwood High School.

Spent some time at Michigan Tech after that.

But in the past few years you've been an assistant coach at Nagani.

So how does it feel to go back to your old stomping ground and now taking over the reins here for the Westwood Patriots?

Yeah, it's been a great transition.

You know, I get a teaching job here a year ago now.

And you know, it just feels good to be back in the

the halls and give back to a community that gave a lot to me.

It's been a great transition so far.

The kids have been working well with putting in a new system and some kids haven't played football in a couple years and they're working well.

We're seeing a lot of improvement so far.

And you're still looking for your first win this season, but you've had a pretty tough schedule to start the year as well.

Your last two games have been against Calumet and Menominee.

What do you think that you're able to take away from that as a coach, and hopefully your players and the rest of the team are able to take from having those games against really good schools?

Yeah, I mean, and end of the day, you got to play who's in front of you, regardless of how good they are, you know, with programs like Calumet and Menominee.

And, you know, we're just looking for to compete.

And, you know, I think we have, we found some kids, especially on the underclassmen junior.

class that, you know, are trying to compete and, you know, try to turn things around here.

And, you know, last week was obviously tough, but maybe Minami's a heck of a football team.

And all you can ask every week is to get better.

And I thought the kids had a great week of practice.

All right.

Talking about those players, do you have any key players on your roster that you want to mention that you think will be impact players in this game?

Maybe players you're expecting to step up a bit more than they have so far in the season?

Yeah.

I mean, at the line, you got to look at Keegan Scott.

I think he's 74 now.

switched a little bit.

He's by far our best lineman, most physical kid, and he's a great kid.

And you know, obviously we're missing Cohen-Ostow still tonight.

We're hoping to get him back in a couple weeks.

But sophomore Andrew Beckman's really stepped up into a role that can be challenging as a sophomore surrounded by upperclassmen.

And you know, another kid that's really stepped up

is

senior Dustin Wayne.

number 70 and he's a kid that hasn't played football since he was a freshman and he's you know really stepped into roles that we really need him at and he's done a heck of a job he's one of those kids that you can plug him in and just say play as hard as you can and he'll do it so you know I think those three guys but you know there's a lot of other kids stepping up too I could go on and on about you know the improvement we've seen from from everybody else for sure

and finally coach you ran into the Houghton Gremlins last year lost a really close match up in that one 44 to 46 the final score obviously

Obviously, you weren't the head coach then, but you spent some time at Nagani.

You've been around this team before.

What are you expecting from the Gremlins tonight?

I mean, they're never the biggest team, but I'll tell you what.

They're physical and they play hard.

Obviously, you got the hockey tradition here.

And you know, you're going to get their best effort every game, regardless of who's in front of you, how much they weigh.

They're going to go as hard as they can.

And our kids got to be ready for that.

They're a physical team.

And obviously, new coach as well.

totally new script from last year.

And, you know, they're just physical.

They've had some really close games, some really good opponents, and I think that's testament to what they're doing up here too.

To start with the visiting Westwood Patriots, some pretty significant news for them that you heard in the coaches' interview.

Their starting quarterback, Cohen Ostela, is out due to injury, so backup quarterback Andrew Beckman, the sophomore, is going to have to take over at the QB position.

Definitely going to be an impact there.

We'll have to see how Coach Gillis can manage this game.

Running with a backup quarterback, he seemed impressed with how he's played so far.

Obviously, some pretty tough games to start the season for the Patriots with those matchups that we talked about, Calumet and Menominee.

So, a sophomore quarterback, excuse me, getting a chance tonight here, and we'll have to see how he responds.

Looking at the Houghton Gremlins.

Michael Salena is gonna be the player to keep an eye on here, usually the running back, listed as a fullback actually on my roster sheet here.

The senior gonna be getting a significant chunk of the carries we would expect tonight.

But, like Coach Luma talked about in the pre-game interview that we had,

Every back was able to eat last week all seven of their senior backs scored a touchdown last week So a pretty big thing to keep an eye on Including I believe quarterback Brodie Donnelly in his senior year We'll have to see how he how active he gets in the passing game But obviously if seven different players are scoring touchdowns the receivers are probably gonna have a few reception TDs on the way So we'll get to see how much he gets involved in the passing game tonight, but if you think about how impactful

Your offensive and defensive line has to be for seven different players score a touchdown It's not just a single-skill position player having a fantastic night Everybody has to get involved and my third impact player for that reason is number 61 the gremlins captain Daniel sub listed as a center and nose tackle on my roster sheet Of course his last name is spelled SUH when you see that name and you hear they're playing nose tackle in the state of Michigan You get pretty excited no relation there to endomic ensue the former Detroit lion and his last name is pronounced

Of course, last week we were up in Calumet covering the minors Copper Kings matchup due to the hour and a half-ish lightning delay.

We were there until about 11 p.m.

So obviously got pretty cold that night.

But if we are able to play this game and get everything done on time, hopefully it's brisk but not too chilly for the pretty crowded fans in the stands that we have tonight at Alumni Field.

The high school band has formed a bit of a human tunnel to escort the players out onto midfield, and as they now approach their home bench, the ishcoming Westwood Patriots enter the field from the opposite side.

But the players have now hit the field.

The fans here excited to see if the Houghton Gremlins, the hometown team, can bring this one home and improve to 500 on the season.

Ishman Westwood Patriots, like we mentioned earlier, still looking for their first one on the year.

But both these teams have had pretty tough schedules to start the season.

So it will be interesting to see how these squads perform.

going up against similar situations.

Both of these teams, first year head coaches coming off of a down year last year.

Westwood went one and eight.

They're only win a forfeit.

I believe against Gwynne High School.

I have that down on my notes.

It was them, yes.

And the Gremlins two and seven last season.

So neither team too happy about how the 2025-26 season went for them, both trying to build on this time.

And we'll have to see how they progress through the season.

but should be a pretty exciting match up here tonight.

You heard in both of those pregame show coaches interviews, both teams talked about the physicality that the other plays with.

Coach Loma had a lot of compliments.

They said he mentioned that they're going to come out.

They're going to fight hard.

They're going to do everything they can to fight for every single inch on the field.

And Coach Sam Gillis had pretty similar comments saying despite.

being a bit undersized for the high school roster.

The Houghton Grimm ones are going to go out there and they're going to fight tooth and nail throughout this game.

And we'll get to see just how that game progresses in a moment here.

The Houghton High School Band now stepping up onto the track in front of the home stands as they get ready to begin this one.

And I believe the National Anthem will be coming up here pretty shortly.
