Butternut hosted Solon Springs Monday night in a match up of what could be two of the top teams in the Conference.  Solon Springs is likely the favorite again after going undefeated in conference play last year.

The young Midgets were up for the challenge.  Solon lead throughout the game, but Butternut battled all night.  They cut a double digit deficit in the first half to 5 before the Eagles hit a bucket before the buzzer to lead 31-24 at the half.

Caitlynn Bebeau hit one of her 3 threes early in the second half to cut the lead to 4, but then a couple minute lapse allowed the Eagles to run out to another double digit lead.  The Midgets had a rally of their own to cut the lead to 9 midway through the 2nd half and had the Eagles in foul trouble, but they could get no closer.  One more run in the final minute for Solon as they pulled away for a hard fought 73-51 win.

Kalli Nelson led all scorers with 34 points and a number of assists.  The Midgets were led by Gianna Nahring with 20 points and 10 rebounds, Caitlynn BeBeau with 15 points and 3 assists.  Brooklynn Treml 4 points and 10 rebounds.

“I’m proud of how we played.  A few jitters early, and a couple short lapses is all it takes for a team like Solon to be in control.  We battled back and made them work for it,” commented Butternut Coach Troy Scherwinski.

Solon Springs improves to 4-0 in conference play.

Butternut falls to (2-2, 2-3) and will travel to South Shore on Thursday for a DH with the boys starting at 5:45.
