A small plane crashed into Lake Michigan Thursday afternoon, approximately 12 miles off the shore of Racine, Wisconsin.

The Cirrus SR22 departed Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee at 12:17 p.m. but encountered a problem in flight, ultimately going down in the lake around 12:37 p.m.

Chicago air traffic control alerted the U.S. Coast Guard on Lake Michigan to the crash at about 12:45 p.m., and a search-and-rescue satellite also signaled the downed aircraft.

Coast Guard crews arrived at the scene by 1:30 p.m. and rescued the three people who had been onboard. Their conditions have not yet been released.

Racine Fire Department Capt. Ed Benson confirmed that no officers were injured during the rescue operation.

Emergency personnel from Burlington, Kansasville, Somers, and Caledonia also responded to assist at the scene.
