Details Revealed in Double Fatal Accident
WAUTOMA, Wis (WAUH)- The Waushara County Sheriff’s Office has released more details about a two-vehicle accident on July 17th that claimed two lives.
It happened on Interstate 39 near mile marker 125 at 11:29 that evening. Initially there were 911 calls minutes earlier about a wrong way driver heading north in the southbound lanes. Deputies found the crash in the northbound lane of traffic.
Fifty-nine-year-old Scott Overfelt of Wisconsin Rapids was driving in the northbound lane. He died at the scene. Thirty-nine-year-old Dana Markko of Amherst was driving the wrong way. She was taken to the UW-Health in Madison where she died two days later.
Preliminary investigations, supported by witness statements, toxicology testing, and scene investigation confirms that Markko was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Sheriff Wally Zuehlke says it was a tragic and entirely preventable event. He added, “Two lives are now lost-one an innocent motorist, the other a result of impaired and reckless decision making.”
