RIPON, Wis. (WRPN/WAUH)- Governor Tony Evers announced yesterday he will not be seeking a third term; instead, he will retire at the end of his term as Wisconsin’s 46th governor.

The 73-year-old Evers has spent 50 years in public service. In his announcement Governor Evers said, “For five decades, my family has sacrificed to give me the gift of service. They’re my world, and I owe it to them to focus on doing all the things were enjoy and love doing together.”

A recent Marquette Law School Poll released last month found a majority of Wisconsin voters—55 percent—didn’t want him to run again, while 48 percent still approved of the job he has been doing.

Ever’s announcement clears the field for a new Democratic candidate. Republicans Josh Schoeman and Bill Berrien have declared their intent to run for the governor’s office.

Evers will remain in office through January 2027.

Transcript of his statement.
