Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul is currently in his second term. And his role at the Wisconsin Department of Justice includes overseeing 800 employees focused on everything from legal cases to criminal investigations, school safety, crime victims’ rights, and open government. Kaul talks with Earl Ingram, host of The Earl Ingram Show, about the most pressing legal and public safety issues facing the state in 2025.

One of the key areas Kaul points out is the ongoing debate surrounding Wisconsin’s gun laws. He addresses the gun show loophole, which allows private citizens to sell firearms without background checks. He emphasizes what he calls is the need for common-sense gun safety reforms. Kaul wants lawmakers to close the loophole and protect communities from the ease with which firearms can be obtained, particularly by minors.
Another contentious issue Kaul continues to tackle is abortion rights in Wisconsin. After the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, women faced restrictions due to an 1849 law criminalizing most abortions.
“Our legal team successfully challenged the law. And now the state’s highest court is set to make a final ruling,” Kaul explains. “We are also calling on the state legislature to repeal outdated laws to ensure continued access to reproductive healthcare in Wisconsin.”
Kaul also expresses concerns about the incoming administration’s stance on illegal immigration. He tells Ingram he worries about the potential dangers of sweeping deportations and the negative impact it could have on communities and families.
“Fair and just treatment for immigrants is important,” Kaul says. “Many have contributed positively to Wisconsin’s economy, particularly in the agricultural sector.”
There will also be an ongoing effort to combat the opioid epidemic in the state during the year ahead. Kaul says pharmaceutical companies have to be held accountable by providing support to those struggling with addiction.
“I remain committed to ensuring public safety, justice, and the fair application of the law in Wisconsin,” Kaul says. “And that’s despite what is sure to be a challenging political landscape ahead.”
