MADISON, Wis (Civic Media) — Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha Counties will receive over $500,000 in funding for coastal projects through the 2024 Wisconsin Coastal Grant Awards. The grants will support initiatives to enhance public access, improve water quality, and promote environmental education along Lake Michigan’s shoreline.
Gov. Tony Evers emphasized the importance of the Great Lakes to Wisconsin’s culture, economy, and history. “These investments will go a long way toward helping ensure we protect our shoreline communities, address the unique challenges we face, and promote long-term growth and success,” Evers said.
In Milwaukee, the public school system will receive $50,000 for green infrastructure projects at five schools. Harbor District, Inc. will get $30,000 to plan the redevelopment of the Milwaukee County boat launch.
Racine will use a $35,000 grant to monitor water quality in the Root River, while Kenosha has been awarded $46,000 for improvements to protect the historic Southport Park Beach House.
The governor announced nearly $1.3 million in total grants to support Wisconsin’s coastal communities through the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program. The 31 grants, administered by the Wisconsin Department of Administration, will be used by various organizations including local, state, and Tribal governments, regional planning commissions, universities, and nonprofits.
The funds aim to enhance quality of life, promote economic development, protect and improve Great Lakes resources, and build resilience in coastal areas along Lake Michigan and Lake Superior.
