It is the second mass shooting in his Wisconsin district this year. US Representative Mark Pocan wants action and expresses disbelief at the ongoing epidemic of gun violence. He also points out that the country leads the world in school shootings and mass shootings. Pocan joined Matt Rothschild, guest host of The Dom Salvia Show, to address the recent deadly shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison

“We have to admit we have a problem,” Pocan says. “Thoughts and prayers are insufficient and don’t lead to anything. We need real action to address the gun violence epidemic.”

He goes on to tell Rothschild he is critical of the influence gun manufacturers have on organizations like the NRA. Pocan calls their focus on profit rather than safety as a contributing factor when trying to deal with this issue.

Pocan also rejects the idea that more security measures like school resource officers or metal detectors would solve the problem.

“Fortifying schools without addressing the root causes of gun violence is not a real solution,” Pocan explains. “We have an addiction to guns. We have to understand this is not just about guns. This is a public health crisis.”

The discussion turns to the need for a broader economic focus within the Democratic Party. Pocan stresses the importance of addressing issues like minimum wage, healthcare, and housing, especially as the country faces a rising cost of living.

“We need to be the party that fights for the average person,” Pocan says.

He also has concerns about the growing influence of figures like Elon Musk on Republican lawmakers, and how Musk’s financial power could shape policy decisions. And Pocan warns – unless the Democratic Party reconnects with its working-class base, it will struggle to combat the divisive tactics being used by the GOP.

In the end, Pocan asks for solidarity to face political and social challenges.

“An injury to any of us is an injury to all of us,” he explains. “We need to have each other’s backs, and fight like hell for each other.”
