A Dane County judge said Wednesday that he was putting a hold on his recent ruling that restored collective bargaining rights to teachers and other public-sector workers, according to The Associated Press.

Dane County Circuit Judge Jacob Frost granted a temporary stay of the ruling, originally issued on Dec. 2, that struck down most of the controversial state law as unconstitutional. According to the AP, the stay “is in place while Frost considers written arguments over whether to place his ruling on hold while the Legislature appeals it.”

The law in question, passed in 2011 shortly after former Gov. Scott Walker took office and known popularly as Act 10, caused weeks of protests at the state Capitol by public workers angry over the loss of union protections and rights. Because of the law, some public workers couldn’t act together to bargain for higher wages and saw payment increases for health insurance and retirement benefits.

The AP reported that the stay will likely be in place until at least Jan. 24, 2025, as that is when arguments are due in court.
