The interview began discussing some of the other Non-profit work Conway had accomplished, including their work with Mid-State Sisters of Skate Roller Derby League. Malouf then asked about what Out Loud MC does.

Pinpointing the need

OUTLoud’s mission is to create and foster safe inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies. Conway expressed the need for a safe space in Marathon County. The group has been around for not quite a year, and have taken part in local Pride parades and other outreach events collecting data. That data pointed to all of the programming offered by the organization. Out Loud MC is still looking for a location for their center, but they are making sure to have all the details planned and prepared for now. Conway has really been able to rely on her experience organizing the Roller Derby League to help her in this endeavor.

Crucial Ally Support

Malouf, as a cis-straight man, made it clear that it is so vital for allies to stand with members of the lgbtq+ community. Conway also stated that she is an ally, and that this stemmed from her realization that she, a parent of queer kids, needed resources. Conway then said that they are already hosting a lgbtq+ parent/caregiver support group. For the time being the group is getting by from the generosity of the community business owners lending them their spaces. Another program they are working to build is a peer mentorship group for older lgbtq+ individuals and allies to connect with youth members looking for that support.

QUEER Youth Need Support

Conway emphasized the need for youth support groups for this community in central Wisconsin. That is the core of their mission in Marathon County. Conway cited the Life Report data which stated that queer identifying youth in Marathon County are most at risk for depression and suicide. This Holiday season Out Loud MC is trying to plan gatherings for those who are without family during this time. One gathering is a Chosen Family and Friends Meal, on Wednesday November 27th from 2:00 PM at the former YMCA building room 203, food is served at 5:00 PM.
