The Mascot Theory is a staple of Wisconsin’s music scene with its soulful, Americana-inspired sound. The band also has an enduring dedication and gives back by supporting local charities. Lead singer and guitarist Erik Kjelland discusses the band’s journey and the impact of Flannel Fest. It’s an annual event bringing musicians together for a common cause.

“Every now and then, you just have to get up and go,” Kjelland explains when asked about Fast Car Getaway, a song that speaks to moments of change. “But the lyrics remain intentionally broad, allowing listeners to connect their own experiences to the music.

The band started years ago. Kjelland claims The Mascot Theory was never intended to be a long-term project.

“It was a total accident,” he says. “The first performance at a coffee house was more than 13 years ago. But we found our footing, evolving through lineup changes and personal transformations. The best part is we’re still having fun and making music that we love.”

The Mascot Theory also prioritizes supporting other musicians and fostering a collaborative music community.

“If you want to build a scene, you’ve got to work with other bands,” Kjelland says.

This spirit shines at Flannel Fest. The fundraising event was co-founded by Kjelland and fellow musician Beth Kille. Now in its 11th year, Flannel Fest showcases local talent, while also featuring a few nationally-touring bands. The whole goal is to raise money for the Keep Wisconsin Warm/Cool Fund. The state-wide organization assists vulnerable Wisconsin residents in need of heating and cooling resources.

“It’s amazing to see the impact,” Kjelland reflects. “All the money goes directly to our neighbors—veterans, the elderly, anyone who needs help. It’s about making an event that’s great for everyone.”

Flannel Fest takes place November 15 at Tanner’s Grill & Bar in Kimberly, Wisconsin, and November 16 at Madison’s Barrymore Theatre. Find all the details here.

The conversation wraps up with an introduction of a new song. Shy Ones. He wrote it as a tribute to his father.

“You never really know what’s going on in people’s heads,” he says, nodding to the introspective nature of the song and the gentle influence of his father’s quiet strength.

And for fans of The Mascot Theory, Flannel Fest promises a night of community, great tunes, and a cause worth celebrating.
