Be Leary of Charitable Organization Scams

The holidays are a great time to help organizations, and needy individuals, through donations. Many generous individuals usually donate money, which is greatly appreciated during the holidays and all year long. When donating be cautious before sending any type of funds. Michelle Reinen (rye-nun) is with The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP).

If anyone reaches out for a donation make sure the charitable cause is legitimate.

There are ways to recognize a fake charity website.

Michelle Reinen says that it is best to donate to a local organization but there are sources to verify if a charity is legitimate.

If you are a victim of a charity scam you can contact DATCP’s Consumer Protection Hotline by phone at 1-800-422-7128 or by email at DATCP Hotline at wi dot gov.
