The Avant-Garde keyboardist moves from Polka Days to Astrometric Space Music during a live radio conversation and concert on the Max Ink Radio show
It’s a mesmerizing live music performance from Graham Marlowe, the versatile keyboardist also known as Lakewaves, who brought his unique blend of musical styles to the “Live in the Lair” segment of the Max Ink Radio Show. The synth maestro, whose repertoire spans jazz, rock, ambient, and avant-garde, captivated listeners with his impromptu compositions and rich musical narratives.
Born in Pulaski, Wisconsin, Marlowe shared stories from his upbringing, including memories of the annual Pulaski Polka Days festival. Although he never picked up the accordion, Marlowe’s respect for polka music is evident.
“There’s a complexity to it that I appreciate,” Marlowe says. “But some of it just doesn’t make sense to me.”
Marlowe’s interest in music began early, influenced by his brothers. The oldest, heavily involved in the professional jazz scene, shared various styles along with instilling a discipline which helped shape Marlowe’s music foundation. It was further enriched by his parents’ diverse musical tastes, spanning from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young to Pink Floyd and Rush.
Educational Pursuits and Influences
Marlowe’s academic path includes a degree in music and English from St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. He studied under Fred Stern, the renowned jazz director.
“Fred Stern’s innovative teaching methods helped me hone the ability to match music with emotional responses in film scenes, “Marlowe says. “My experiences with him shaped my approach to music composition and performance.”
Musical Ventures and Live Performances
In addition to his solo work, Marlowe performs with the Lakewaves Trio, a group he describes as blending the improvisational spirit of a jazz club with the high-energy atmosphere of a rave.
“The sound is jam-oriented, but we are not necessarily a jam band,” Marlowe explains.
Marlowe’s improvisational prowess was on full display during the live session. He performed tracks like “Phone Number Acquisition” and “Manic Upswing,” each piece a testament to his ability to create vivid musical landscapes in real-time. The latter, inspired by a challenging period of unemployment and sobriety, resonated with its raw power.

The Synthesizer Graffiti Artist
Marlowe’s stage setup, a complex array of synthesizers and sequencers, drew comparisons to a spaceship. He explained his process of layering sounds and creating textures, comparing it to a graffiti artist creating a mural.
Influences from electronic pioneers like Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis, and Tangerine Dream are evident in his work, yet Marlowe’s sound remains distinctly his own.
Future Prospects
As Marlowe continues to explore new musical territories, he remains committed to evolving his sound and engaging with diverse audiences. Whether performing solo or with the Lakewaves Trio, his ability to move between genres and connect emotionally with listeners ensures his place as a dynamic force in the music scene.
