MADISON, Wis. (Civic Media) – The Wisconsin Department of Justice announced Tuesday that it was filling charges against three people accused of being involved in an unappointed elector conspiracy for the 2020 presidential election.

Josh Kaul, Wisconsin AG, made the announcement at the state capitol building.

Kenneth Chesebro, Michael Roman, and James Troupis are charged with conspiring to commit the crime of uttering as genuine a forged writing or object, a felony.

“The criminal complaint in this case alleges that the defendants were part of a conspiracy to present a certificate of purported electoral votes from individuals who were not Wisconsin’s duly appointed electors,” Kaul said in announcing the charges. “The Wisconsin Department of Justice is committed to protecting the integrity of our electoral process.”

The charges were filed in Dane County. The criminal complaints detail the planning and execution of attempting to cast Wisconsin’s electoral votes in favor of the Republican presidential ticket, Donald Trump and Mike Pence.

Court documents also detail the elections processes in Wisconsin for appointing electors for presidential elections and how votes are counted and certified.

Also filed with the charges were the certified results of the 2020 presidential election and all of the documents the state is required to show in order to certify federal elections.

Gov. Tony Evers released a one-word statement — “Good” — in response to the announcement of the charges.

The maximum penalty for the charges if convicted is a $10,000 fine or six years in prison, or both, according to state statute.

A copy of the charges filed against all three defendants are available below.
