Active Stretch of Severe Weather: Will it Continue?

MADISON, Wis. (CIVIC MEDIA) – With 22 tornadoes occurring over 4 different days so far this year, Wisconsin is already above last years twister totals.

On a Tuesday evening, sirens blared across many parts of the state, marking it the biggest event with 15 confirmed tornado touchdowns. A severe weather outbreak in Wisconsin on May 21st, 2024.

13 of them were rated EF1s and 2 were EF0s.

Tallying us up 22 tornadoes so far this year.

Only 4 days delt with the destruction of tornadoes so far this season.

The most recent tornado struck Jefferson County over Memorial Day Weekend.

The strongest tornado was rated an EF-2 that ripped through Evansville, in February. Marking it the first touchdown to ever take place in that month, statewide. It took no lives but injured cattle and did nearly $2.5 million in damage to the area.

On average, Wisconsin has 23 tornadoes that occur throughout the entire year.  

Last year, the state saw 21 of them. With that number already surpassed by the end of May, summer will have a lot to tell.

The National Weather Service predicts that severe weather will continue to be a factor throughout this entire summer.

Most of Wisconsin’s severe weather strikes from June through July.

Currently in an El Niño Advisory and a La Niña Watch. NOAA predicts that we are shifting into a La Nina climate pattern sometime in July. Forecasters say with the switch, severe weather season this year could be longer and more damaging.
