WAUKESHA, Wis. (WAUK) – Wisconsin Democrats on Wednesday condemned former President Donald Trump’s stance on abortion rights, warning that his policies would threaten the freedoms of women in the state. The criticism came during a press conference this morning in Waukesha County, where Trump speaks later in the day.
Danielle Scampini Linn, with the group Motherhood for Good, said Trump has “proudly bragged” about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade and has endorsed prosecuting and punishing women who have abortions.”Trump’s latest comments leave little doubt. If he is elected, he will sign a national abortion ban. He will allow women who have abortions to be punished and prosecuted,” Linn said.
Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Sarah Rodriguez, who was raised in Waukesha County, echoed those concerns, saying Trump’s agenda has had “devastating effects on the health of women across the country.” Rodriguez said Trump has refused to rule out signing legislation that could restrict access to in vitro fertilization and contraception.
She vowed that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris would always protect a woman’s right to choose.
The comments came as Trump was set to make a visit to Waukesha, which have trended more Democratic in recent years. Rodriguez said she believes Trump is worried about losing support in the traditionally Republican stronghold of Waukesha. “Waukesha was once considered a Republican stronghold, but in recent years I’ve seen my neighbors, my friends, my family members who are now voting for Democrats,” Rodriguez said. “That’s because here in Waukesha we are common-sense people. We reject extremism and government interference”
The Democrats’ event was part of an effort to energize voters ahead of the November election, which they say will determine the future of reproductive rights in the U.S.
