RACINE, Wis.(WRJN) – More veterans in Racine could soon have a place to call home if they need it. Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin is seeking approval to add nine homes to its village at 1624 Yout Street, bringing the total to 24 units.

The City of Racine Planning, Heritage and Design Commission recommended approval this week for a major amendment to the group’s conditional use permit.

The new homes would be part of the transitional-living community for veterans. Each unit has a bed, a small kitchen, storage and a TV, and a nearby community center provides bathrooms, showers and a place to gather.

The nonprofit said it has funding ready for four of the new homes, and people are already lined up to move in.

City staff recommended approval, saying the request fits the city’s land-use plan and that no zoning change is proposed.

The project still needs final city approval before work can move ahead.
