MADISON, Wis. (WMDX) – Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has signed Senate Bill 92, now known as 2023 Wisconsin Act 1, into law Monday.

The law is intended to help reduce reckless driving in the state by authorizing law enforcement to impound a vehicle if the driver is cited for reckless driving in certain circumstances.

According to the language of the bill, which is now statute 349.115, a vehicle may be impounded if the driver is cited for reckless driving and hasn’t paid the fine for previous citations of reckless driving, if the ordinance is enacted by local governments.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe in our communities and on our roads and streets, whether they’re taking their kids to school or driving home from work, but reckless driving and other dangerous behaviors are putting folks at risk across our state,” Gov. Evers said in a release, which also detailed a number of budget proposals to help address issues with travel in Wisconsin.
