Civic Media Spotlight for the Weekend of March 8th & 9th (Hour 1)

March 8, 2025

To begin the hour, Trygve Olson of The Lincoln Project shares some new research from the Lincoln Democracy Institute with the Todd Allbaugh Show. For the last year, they've been talking with thousands of Americans in swing states, including Wisconsin. These discussions went far beyond the typical poll, asking not just what people think, but WHY they think it. The results can teach us a lot about connecting with our neighbors and having difficult discussions.

Then on the Dom Salvia Show, Dom and Earl Ingram discuss a potential looming recession due to the economic chaos of the second Trump administration. The news is bad but the discussion is great!

Next on the Maggie Daun Show, Maggie is joined by guest co-host Tom Palzewicz. Jeff, a conservative caller from Superior, explains why he believes Trump has the right to change laws. Turns out the Constitution, as Jeff believes, does not give Trump that right.

Finally, Milwaukee Film Critic, Matt Mueller joins the Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba. Matt and Pete talk about Adrien Brody's long acceptance speech at the Oscars, the winners of awards and their thoughts, and what should've been nominated but wasn't.

President Whiplash

March 6, 2025

Tom Palzewicz is Maggie's guest co-host today. President Trump continues to issue...unissue...then reissue executive orders. Rinse and repeat. It's exhausting, but as Maggie and Tom point out, Donald Trump is the president for all people. He needs to answer to the middle class, not just the billionaire class. When it comes to the federal government, the amount the US spends on the people is less than 10 percent of the budget. Under this current administration, people are being interfered with in their daily lives, and it hurts.

Numbers Don’t Lie

March 6, 2025

It's almost the weekend! Tom Palzewicz, the most reasonable guy in politics, joins Maggie as her guest host. They dig right in with Prof. Charles Franklin from Marquette University. He's got a new poll, and it turns out, voters really haven't learned as much as they need to know going into the spring election. Only four weeks to go...It's coming up on April 1. Check your voter registration and/or voting precinct by visiting https://myvote.wi.gov/en-us/. And overall, Wisconsin independents aren't super excited about what they've seen from Trump or Musk so far.

The World Is A Microcosm

February 27, 2025

Jeramey Jannene from Urban Milwaukee joins Maggie and Tom this hour for our new segment, "Milwaukee in a Microcosm." They begin by discussing Tearman Spencer. Read up: https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2025/02/26/former-city-attorney-pleads-not-guilty-case-bound-over-for-trial/.

It's worth your time. Turns out local politics has it's issues...and looks a lot like what's happening on the federal level. All the stuff happening in your city can impact you and your family more than what's happening in Washington D.C. Plus, the Miami of the Midwest will see fewer cruise ships in 2025. Jeramey points out that multiple cruise ship lines will be reducing their Great Lakes offerings in 2025.

Maggie and Tom also discuss DEI...or lack there of in this current America. DEI is about breaking barriers so all people have the opportunity to thrive in schools and the workplace. It promotes and supports diversity in all forms and works to address and eliminate any form of discrimination and bias. Here are some authors and works for you to check out:

The World We Live In

February 27, 2025

Tom Palzewicz, the most reasonable guy in politics, is here once again as Maggie's co-host. Maggie and Tom begin today by talking about the measles outbreak in Texas. Maggie went to the CDC website to get official information but realized that is no longer a reliable source. This is the world we live in now...

Tom and Maggie also wonder how, in this current world, we get people to understand and really listen. Common sense seems to be something that is missing.

It’s All About Control

February 20, 2025

Tom Palzewicz, the most reasonable guy in politics, is Maggie's co-host today. The conversation regarding the dismay over the Trump administration's trash talk of European allies and NATO continues this hour. There's a lot of transactional dealmaking happening. Illinois Governor JD Pritzker gave his 2025 State of the State address earlier this week. Maggie and Tom discuss Pritzker's warning against authoritarianism.

Corruption Runs Deep

February 20, 2025

It's Thursday (and a jam-packed hour), and Tom Palzewicz is back as Maggie's co-host. Kash Patel has officially been confirmed, and Mitch McConnell has announced he's not running again. Maggie and Tom discuss how it's actually a related move. Plus, the Trump administration is getting rid of CISA and targeting government officials who had been flagging foreign interference in U.S. elections. Maggie and Tom also discuss the latest Republican take on Ukraine and the new American-Russian alliance.

Weakness of the Mind

February 13, 2025

Tom Palzewicz, one of the most reasonable guys in politics, is back as Maggie's co-host. Dane County Circuit Court Judge and Wisconsin Supreme Court Candidate Susan Crawford joins Maggie and Tom to discuss the (just announced!) March 12 debate. The Wisconsin Supreme Court plays an important role into our rights and acts as a check and balance for other branches of government. Judge Crawford says she will be a judge we can count on to uphold those values. Maggie and Tom also take some time this hour to look into how Democrats should handle the upcoming budget reconciliation bill and vote. They are literally fighting corruption, so is withholding their votes until they get some GOP compromise the right move? They need to play a shrewd game to help protect some of our principles and and programs, as Maggie and Tom discuss.

Promises Kept, Promises Broken

February 13, 2025

It's another Thursday, and Tom Palzewicz is back as Maggie's co-host. On today's agenda, tariffs, inflations, and shut downs - oh my! Are these promises kept or promises broken? Maggie and Tom discuss how President Trump's tariffs are going to lead to a trade war and how the rising prices will effect swing states like Wisconsin. These decisions only line Trump's pockets. As Maggie and Tom point out, we are a critical juncture.

Who’s Watching the Watcher?

February 6, 2025

Tom Palzewicz is back as Maggie's co-host. This hour, Maggie and Tom discuss data collection...or as it currently stands, the lack of data collection. One of the things the US government has done really well has been the non-partisan collection of data and sharing it with the public. Now that data is being scrubbed, and as Maggie and Tom point out, this is what autocrats do. They pretend the information being collected isn't happening, and this may the most fundamental problem we have going forward as a democracy.
