Climate in the Courts (Hour 3)
Is Big Oil about to go the way of Big Tobacco and face an overdue courtroom reckoning for its role in putting our climate and human health in danger? If so, there’s no shortage of courtrooms where that might happen. Former US Attorney Jim Santelle joins Melissa Baldauff in this week’s Climate Check to discuss a World Court ruling as well as landmark lawsuits making progress recently in Hawaii, New York, and Italy. Also: Civic Media reporter James Kelly has an update on stories across northwest Wisconsin.

Good Trouble Still Needed (Hour 3)
It’s been five years since the passing of Civil Rights leader and former congressman John Lewis, and his spirit still calls us to get into what he called “good trouble” in the fight for voting rights, dignity, and justice for all. Earl Ingram’s new Civic Media podcast asks how we carry that legacy forward—from civic engagement to mobilizing for change, in order to ensure Wisconsin stands on the right side of history.

Making Derrick Listen (Hour 3)
The representative from Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District is hardly representative of public opinion, which is decidedly against taking away their healthcare and nutrition benefits to pay for tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy, but some folks are going to try again tonight to get Derrick Van Orden to pay attention—if he can rip himself away from Twitter for a few moments. We’ll talk to the new chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin Devin Remiker about this evening’s event in La Crosse.

Overdue Reform (Hour 3)
When the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that the state could move forward with a ban on so-called conversion therapy, it was actually ruling on a much broader topic: Republicans abusing the rules in order to allow the Legislature to interfere with state agencies. It’s not the only example of an abuse of power—remember those gerrymandered maps? But the liberal justices now in charge of the court seem to be making it harder for politicians to bend the rules. We’ll talk to state Sen. Kelda Roys. Also: Climate Check with Melissa Baldauff, a check on western Wisconsin news with James Kelly, and Earl Ingram launches his Civic Media podcast.

Cows Going Solar (Hour 3)
In this week’s Climate Check, a lighter story about adaptation. The knock on solar farms has been that all those panels would restrict crop growth or grazing. It didn’t take long for folks to get creative in ways that make the panel mobile and even provide shade for cows while they graze! And we’ll get updates from Civic Media friends Earl Ingram in SE Wisconsin, James Kelly in NW Wisconsin, Jimmie Kaska in southwest WI with updates on how the new state budget will support UW projects and more.

Ban the Bags (Hour 3)
In this week’s Climate Check, it really is that simple — plastic bag bans work to reduce litter and damage. Also: Despite a Trump administration at war with cleaner energy, one automaker says it’s keeping its plans to expand battery development, even without tax incentives.

The GOP Wants Thought Police on Campus (Hour 1)
When it comes to public funding by legislatures, the University of Wisconsin System is already one of the least-supported in the country because of an ongoing Republican war against education. Now GOP lawmakers want to drag the UW down further. Instead of considering the requests from Gov. Tony Evers and hundreds of business leaders for an overdue funding increase, Republicans are now talking about cutting UW funding. Why? Their perpetual whining about “political correctness” has them demanding changes in how ideas are discussed. How much closer to Orwell’s “Thinkpol” can they get?

Selective Support for Clean Energy (Hour 3)
The big, bloated boondoggle of a budget bill working its way through Congress not only has massive cuts to Medicaid and other vital programs, it also tries to kill the tax credits that could create a new generation of clean energy jobs. Republicans are suddenly having second thoughts—not about protecting healthcare, but at least protecting the tax credits that benefit their corporate friends who could create those new jobs in their states.
