A Path Forward for Wisconsin (Hour 1)

February 19, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us as cohost.

In this hour, it's all about Wisconsin and our path forward! Yesterday, citizens across the state cast their ballots in the spring primary. All wards voted in the State Superintendent of Public Instruction primary, and many wards also voted in school board primaries and for local referenda. After the tally, incumbent Superintendent of Public Instruction Jill Underly and pro-voucher challenger Brittney Kinser advance to the general election. Also yesterday, Governor Tony Evers delivered the biennial 2025-2026 budget address to a joint session of the state Legislature. In it, Evers outlined his priorities for funding essentials in this state. At the top of his list: PFAs remediation, tax relief for those who genuinely need it, school funding, and expanded access to health care. Gee, how radical!

Revisiting Josh Kaul, Bill Press, and Bishop Budde (Hour 1)

February 14, 2025

This episode is a curated Best Of, pulled from January 22nd and 23rd. First, from January 23rd's first hour, our talk with Wisconsin's Attorney General Josh Kaul on the lawsuit our state joined opposing President Trump's unlawful attempt to end birthright citizenship. Then, from that day's second hour, checking in with our friend Bill Press on how to navigate the firehose of BS from the chaos administration.

The second half hour comes from our second hour on January 22nd, with Matt Rothschild as cohost. We turn to Bishop Mariann Budde and the moving sermon she delivered to the Interfaith Inaugural Service on January 21st. And of course, we ended that day with something good.

Here’s all the money, but where’s the heart and the voice? (Hour 2)

February 12, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us as cohost for the day. Turning away from national politics for a bit, we look at the race for Wisconsin's Supreme Court. This election is shaping up to be exorbitantly expensive, with millions and millions already raised by the two candidates. In 2015, Scott Walker signed a bill into law rewriting Wisconsin's election finance laws. Now, money is speech in Wisconsin, and there is no limit on donations to state parties, who can then disperse the funds as they see fit. It's law, but it's not right. And we ask where the speech is for those of us without tens of thousands to give to our favored candidates. Where is the voice for the working people? Where are our elected leaders to stand up to the billionaires stripping our government for parts and footing us with the bill?

Billionaires don’t belong in the Oval (Hour 1)

February 12, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us as cohost for the day. Every day of President Trump's second term is apparently 'bring your billionaire to work' day. With Elon Musk, the world's richest person, answering questions from press in the Oval, we're wondering who the real president is. And Musk is already openly admitting to misleading the public- we call that 'lying' round here- on rationales for cutting life saving aid. No, there was not $50,000,000 in condoms allocated out of USAID's funding. And despite Musk claiming that his team will get things wrong and make it right, we're still waiting on an apology and clarification. And we'll keep on waiting. Because it's just not going to happen. Ok, so Musk's lying to us. But is Trump at least delivering on his promise to lower inflation ON DAY ONE? Nope. Not even in the first few weeks.

January 25, 2025

Catch up on the best of this week's segments

Next, from Thursday's second hour, hear about how to navigate the firehose of Trump's, shall we call it 'guano', to focus on what matters with Bill Press.

Then, from Wednesday's first hour with Matt Rothschild: was that a Nazi salute from Musk? That was ABSOLUTELY a Nazi salute performed by Elon Musk.

Finally, hear something good from Wednesday's second hour, with a poem selected by Matt Rothschild, and a clearing of the record from Dom.

Speak Truth to Power. Always. (Hour 2)

January 22, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us as cohost for the day.

President Trump seeks to change the US Constitution by executive order, a clear violation of that very document. On the first day of his second term, he ended birthright citizenship by executive order. Granted, over 20 states immediately filed lawsuits and the negation of the 14th amendment's granting of citizenship to all those born on US soil won't take effect unless the legal challenges are all dismissed. Here's a line-by-line breakdown of Trump's executive order.

As this second Trump presidency unfolds and brings out the worst of oligarchy, we must be prepared to speak truth to power. We saw a powerful example of that on Inauguration Day. The Right Reverend Mariann Budde delivered an inaugural sermon on unity, patriotism, and compassion. And she addressed Trump directly in a plea for mercy towards the citizens and residents of this great country. She's an example for us all.

If it quacks like a duck or steps like a goose… (Hour 1)

January 22, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us as cohost for the day. We need to talk about hand signals and the meanings they carry. Like we frequently recognize a welcoming beckon or a dismissive shooing, there are certain unmistakable things we can do with our hands. No one in our culture would mistake an extended middle finger on an otherwise closed fist as anything other than rude- potentially unless among very close friends. Similarly, a single raised flat handed salute from the chest only looks like one thing: the Nazi or Roman salute, an absolutely overt fascist symbol. And that's exactly what Elon Musk performed at the inauguration for the 47th President of these United States. Not to be misunderstood, Musk repeated the gesture. Beyond our reckoning, experts in the matter assert: what Musk did was perform the Nazi salute. If those who abhor the gesture won't convince you, look to the actual self-declared fascists who are celebrating. And that is absolutely unacceptable. Don't look away or make excuses. Elon Musk is showing us exactly who he is and what he wants. Do NOT let him have it.

Weekly Best of Dom Salvia Show for Jan 18

January 18, 2025

Catch up on the best of this week's segments and join us on Monday for more!

First, Jack Smith's report on the January 6th insurrection and Donald Trump's role in it, with Maggie Daun from Tuesday's first hour.

Then, how bad of a problem is wealth inequality? Hear from our favorite Delano Democrat Harvey Kaye from the second hour of Monday's show.

Next, on Wednesday, the warring parties in Israel and Gaza agreed to a three phase ceasefire and hostage deal. The event bears strange echoes to the Iranian hostage crises of 1979-1980, which Dom discusses with Matt Rothschild and a disgruntled frequent caller with too much disinformation in his diet. This, from the first hour of Wednesday's show.

Finally, we remember Mr. Baseball, Bob Uecker, with Civic Media sports reporter Mike Clemens from the first hour of our Thursday show.

Have a great weekend, we'll catch ya on Monday!

Hard truths and a moment of beauty (Hour 2)

January 15, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us as cohost today.

Today, Pam Bondi, President-elect Trump's pick for Attorney General faced Senate questioning. Unlike the nominee for Secretary of Defense, Bondi actually seems to possess the necessary skills and experience to fulfill the leadership position. Unfortunately, just like her fellow Cabinet nominee, Pam's primary qualifying merit for the position is her undying loyalty to Donald Trump. She represented Trump in his first impeachment trial of his first administration. Bondi campaigned with him in 2020 and pushed the Big Lie that the election was stolen from him. Even today in her hearing, she refused to say even once that Joe Biden won the 2020 election. Her inability to commit to being impartial and independent from Trump deeply worried Democratic senators today. And it deeply worries us.

We end the show with a moment reflecting on the healing majesty of nature with Wendell Berry's poem "The Peace of Wild Things" in our recurring Tell Me Something Good segment.

Ceasefire, finally. (Hour 1)

January 15, 2025

Matt Rothschild joins us today as cohost.

Today, the combating parties in Israel and Gaza reached a historic ceasefire agreement. The ceasefire agreement, brokered with mediators from the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, follows President Biden's proposed plan from May 2024. After over 15 months of devastating war, we take a few moments to cherish this relief. If followed to completion, this deal will lead to a permanent ceasefire. There is not, however, any language in the deal to work towards a true permanent solution that creates a state for the Palestinian people. Without a path to self-determination, we fear a return to this situation before too long.
