Back to School: Building Community
Teacher Joanna joins Dr. Tim to pick up the conversation about the back-to-school season. Turns out, back to school involves more than tacking up new posters and cleaning desks. In those first days back in the classroom before students join them, teachers lay the groundwork for the entire year. Joanna shares her tips for building strong community with her students and establishing her classroom as a democratic learning space.

Thank goodness it’s Friday, that’s nothing trivial!
Goodness this week passed in a blink, and yet we covered SO MUCH! Thank goodness it's Busted Pencils Friday, when we get to break it down. This week, we soaked in the radical joy that returned to politics with the Harris-Walz ticket. We talked professional ethics- this week's anchoring lesson from On Tyranny- from classroom to boardroom to situation room. And today we get Tim's Trivia, delivered in a riddle... sort of... Plus, a new lesson from from the 20th Century to focus our thoughts next week.

The Right to be a Uuuman*, A Social Studies Lesson
Today, we're talking human needs and human excellence. First off, checking in on the Olympics- an important opportunity for multi-cultural exchanges. And an excellent chance to promote diversity, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. AND the Olympics provide ample teaching moments for two educated social studies educators.
Then, a social studies lesson in honor of the newest Vice Presidential nominee, Coach Tim Walz. Frequent caller LA Tom has brought up FDR's "second Bill of Rights" several times this week. Just what is the second bill of rights? Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny do what they do best: educate.
*Tim's Pittsburgh roots turn "human" into "uuuman"

Harris-Walz: Make America Joyful Again
Joy- pure radiant jubilant joy- returns to American politics with the announcement of Tim Walz as Kamala Harris' VP pick. Who could have guessed three weeks ago that we would be so excited for the 2024 Presidential election? Who would have guessed that public education would rise to such prominence in this race? Well, Dr. Johnny Lupinacci called that second one back in January. On the matter of joy, we're all very pleasantly surprised. Now we get to work advocating for education, for professional ethics, and yes, for joy.

Civic Media Spotlight for August 3rd & 4th (Hour 2)
Up first this hour, Air Force Veteran Roy Rogers joins Jim and John to talk a bit about his experience in the military, which includes the story of stepping on a land mine in combat and losing part of his hand. But also shares an extremely interesting and funny story about his "famous" name. It involves George Washington, Anita Bryant and outhouses.. An amazing story! You've gotta listen!
Then, Busted Pencils has a conversation with Dr. Joe Gothard, incoming superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District about equity and excellence. Dr Gothard shares his commitment to elevating both equity AND excellence for all students in the district. He has a strong history of doing just that in his previous role as superintendent of the St. Paul School District of Minnesota. In this segment, Dr. Gothard shares his experiences from Spring 2020, a tumultuous time he navigated as a leader with the Covid pandemic unfolding and the social turmoil following the murder of George Floyd. In his experiences, Dr. Joe has developed a simple question he asks constantly that cuts to the heart of education's purpose: how are the children?
The week ends with a segment from Nite Lite with Pete Schawaba, when he was joined by comedian, actor, and artist Steve Seagren joins the show. Pete and Steve talk Wiffleball, what Steve is painting, and then shares songs that he can be happy never hearing again.

Teaching In Times of Crisis
When historical events unfold, teachers must teach. Today, Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny talk about how to address big historical moments- events that often feel like or ARE crises- in the classroom. They emphasize the need to build regular moments of genuine connection into daily routines. When these exist, teachers have a strong base of trust with their students, and students feel comfortable to share their fears and experiences during those critical moments. More than that, having built-in time for addressing current events in a safe environment means that teachers need not abandon curriculum in trying times- deviate, certainly, but never abandon.

Zipping Up the WPEN Summer Summit
Bert Zipperer, returning Pencil Buster, active union enthusiast, and retired school counselor, joins Dr. Tim and Producer Jess to discuss the WPEN Summit. Wisconsin's educated educators have been a'talkin education all day. We attended learning sessions, gathered stories, and met with the most fully leaded teachers this side of the Michigan. And now it's time to chop it up. Bert currently serves as president of Madison Teachers Inc- Retired (MTI-R), a union representing retired educators who were part of MTI during their active teaching careers. He may be retired, but he's been busting pencils all day and STILL agreed to do an encore hour with us!
