Angela Lang
Constitution Consternation (Hour 1)
Matt Rothschild and Angela Lang, Executive Director of BLOC- Black Leaders Organizing for Community guest host today. Continuing the discussion Dom started with Angela yesterday, what should be the focus of the constantly expanding campaign for the Supreme Court of Wisconsin? Well, how about the Constitution? Many ads in these SCoWis races attempt to frame opponents as "soft on crime," which both serves as a racist dogwhistle and to reopen community wounds. Yet the state's highest court doesn't address common crime. It's time for change in these races- and we don't mean change as in money. With $59 MILLION already invested into this race, we desperately need LESS money in our judicial races. Regardless, this is the race we have this time. BLOC endorses Judge Susan Crawford for SCoWis Justice. Check your voter registration and all items on your ballot, then make a plan and vote by April 1st!
Then, moving on to another threat to our Constitution, this time our nation's. Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil is currently being held in an ICE detention facility after the Trump administration revoked his status as legal permanent resident. He has not been charged with any crime. So why is he there? Because of speech- a right protected in our First Amendment.
We end our day with something good- always. And as Matt joins us, we have a poem. Enjoy Audre Lorde's "A Woman Speaks," some bird calls, and a call to come together in community.

What SCoWiS does– and doesn’t– do (Hour 2)
Angela Lang, Executive Director of BLOC- Black Leaders Organizing for Community- joins us to discuss the upcoming Supreme Court of Wisconsin (SCoWis) race. Read her latest piece up on The Recombobulation Area- now part of Civic Media- on how the SCoWis campaigns have changed over the past decade. The focus has shifted to emphasize candidates being "tough on crime," which so frequently carries racist tones. That's particularly problematic when we consider that SCoWis doesn't hear cases about common street crimes. So what does our state Supreme Court do? Tune in, and make sure you have a plan to vote by April 1st in the general election. Check your voter registration and all items on your ballot, then make a plan and vote!
We continue the conversation with audio from Wisconsin Attorney General, Josh Kaul. Attorney Kaul shares his concerns regarding Judge Brad Schimel, facing off against Judge Susan Crawford for a spot on our state's Supreme Court. Schimel failed as our state's Attorney General. That's why Josh Kaul won that election in 2018 and earned re-election in 2022.
And of course, we conclude our day by sharing something good.

Countering the ridiculousness of it all with some sense (Hour 2)
Matt Rothschild fills in as guest host for the day. Angela Lang, executive director of BLOC- Black Leaders Organizing for Community- joins as cohost for the hour. We discuss efforts towards countering the hate, the divisiveness, and the absolute nonsense of the second Trump administration. In this hour, we address the world's richest person, unelected and unqualified, dominating the first Cabinet meeting and AI generated videos about ethnically cleansing Gaza. So what can we do about it? How can we bring some sense to this all as a form of countering the destruction of our democracy? Well, we can protest. As several hundred did yesterday outside Senator Ron Johnson's Madison office to voice their concerns over Medicaid cuts forecast in the next national budget.
Another powerful way of countering the divisiveness is to find what brings us together. Like the first signs of spring in the calls of a sandhill crane or buds on a tree. Or in poetry. As he often does, Matt chose a powerful poem to share to end the show. Listen to the full session of Clint Smith reading his poetry or choose only the poem we shared here.

Civic Media Spotlight for January 4th & 5th (Hour 1)
Kicking off this weekend's Civic Media Spotlight, Jane, Greg and Calvin talk about whether they make New Year's Resolutions and what effect they have on us if we don't follow through. We take calls and read texts from the listeners on this and give advice on how to reach goals for yourself.
Then, Green Bay based comedian John Egan joins Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba. John talks about the stand-up scene in Green Bay and De Pere. Pete and John share stories from around the state in comedy, and John talks about new dates coming up!
Following that on the Todd Allbaugh Show, Todd updates listeners on the tragic attack in New Orleans in the early hours of New Year's Day. His focus in this segment is on the Fox News coverage. They made up lies about the alleged perpetrator before anybody really had any information, stating that he was an illegal immigrant and this is all Joe Biden's fault. In reality, he was a citizen of Texas and an Afghanistan veteran. Todd emphasizes the importance of truth, and how Fox News has continually failed to reach that goal.
Wrapping up the first hour, on The Maggie Daun Show guest hosted by Dan Shafer, Dan is joined by BLOC’s Angela Lang and Law Forward’s Jeff Mandell to discuss the complexities of ACT 10 and its repeal. Enacted in Wisconsin in 2011, ACT 10 severely limited public sector unions' collective bargaining rights, sparking protests and debates over workers' rights.

Returning Ourselves (Hour 2)
Matt Rothschild and Angela Lang, Executive Director of BLOC, guest cohost today.
At the top of the hour, Matt and Angela wrestle with the aftermath of the Abundant Life Christian School mass shooting on Monday. What should be done to protect students, teachers, and all those who use our schools? And what right do we have to know the personal information of those impacted by these tragedies? If you are searching for a way to help those affected by the shooting, one path is to donate to help the community. Among many options, United Way of Dane County has organized a fundraiser you can contribute to here.
We end the show with Wisconsin Poet Laureate, Nick Gulig. He talks with us about how to return to ourselves through poetry. How can we navigate the 'cacophony of ailments' that plague the MAGA cult and the poisonous narcissism of Trump?
