Let’s Honor Memorial Day
It’s Memorial Day Weekend, and that’s our theme on NEWisco Weekend.

Our cover story features Civic Media’s very own John Maino and why telling the stories of veterans and those we’ve lost in service to our country is so important to him.
Teri Barr has a feature on the history of Memorial Day. Pete Schwaba stays on theme with a poignant film perfect for the weekend. We’ll have stories on Quilts of Valor and Summer safety when boating or swimming from Melissa Kaye, and Konrad Krueger tells us about the Green Bay Action Sports Organization. We wrap things up with Operation Song. It’s a meaningful and moving issue of NEWisco Weekend.

NEWisco Weekend is a part of the Civic Media radio network and airs Saturdays at 8 am and Sundays at 11 am on 97.9 WGBW and 98.3 and 96.5 WISS. Paws for Patriots: Healing Veterans Through Canine Companions
Happy Friday! Maggie begins today's show by shining a light on the transformative work of Patriot K9s of Wisconsin with Executive Director Lani Rethaber. This remarkable organization pairs service dogs with veterans facing PTSD and other mental health challenges. Through a unique training model that involves both community volunteers and prison programs, these dogs are specially trained to detect stress hormones and provide deep pressure therapy—empowering veterans to reclaim their independence and restore personal connections. With veteran suicide rates at crisis levels, the conversation underscores the critical need for programs like this. It's a true testament to the healing power of the human-animal bond and the lives being changed across Wisconsin thanks to these devoted canine companions.

Superheroes and Budding Superstars (Hour 2)
Even if you live outside of Northeastern Wisconsin, NEWisco Weekend is one of Civic Media's greatest weekly shows! It is hosted by none other than Civic Media News Northeast Wisconsin Bureau Chief Lisa Hale, and she joins Pete tonight to give a preview of the fun conversations she'll be having this weekend in celebrating superheroes and everyday community heroes.
Up next, Teri Barr joins us for a very special Barr Band Friday, reminding us not to judge an artist based on their age. Our live musical guest is Paige Kleber, an up-and-coming singer-songwriter from Madison who is just 12 years old, making her the youngest guest on Nite Lite so far! She was inspired by the accomplishments of young artists like Taylor Swift, and we believe that her journey will inspire other young musicians in much the same way. Despite her young age, she has already released an album of amazing original songs and plays shows around the state, including several performances of the National Anthem at sports events. Between the annual Madison Area Music Association and Wisconsin Area Music Industry awards shows, Paige is up for several awards, and she will be performing at the WAMI Award Show.
Head to paigekleber.com to check out Paige's music and upcoming shows, and to join her mailing list, the GlueSticks Fan Club!

Social Security Lies, Truths, and the Billionaire Agenda
Maggie is joined this hour by Former Maryland Governor and Commissioner of the Social Security Administration Martin O'Malley to debunk some of the biggest social security lies. No matter what Elon Musk tells you, it turns out social security is not a Ponzi scheme, won't go broke, and millions of dead people aren't still getting benefits. As Maggie and Martin discuss, social security is actually a 97-year-old system designed to help everyday people. Plus, Teri Barr is back for another edition of "What's Good, Local and Overlooked in Wisconsin." Teri talks Wisconsin sports highlighting the band Doozey who's making waves at the NFL draft.
