December 21, 2024

First up on Spotlight, Nite Lite is joined by Greg Schwem, Nationally Syndicated Tribune Columnist, joins the show. Greg talks about a new book he wrote, Turning Gut Punches Into Punch Lines: A Comedian's Journey Through Cancer, Divorce and Other Hilarious Stuff. On UpNorthNews with Pat Kreitlow, the electors who decide each presidential election gathered in state capitols this week, and one of Donald Trump’s Wisconsin electors, former Gov. Tommy Thompson, said it’s time for everyone to “turn the page” on Trump’s fake electors plot to steal the 2020 election. Pat Kreitlow responds: Hell, no. Trump can pardon in federal cases, but state cases like the one in Wisconsin need to keep moving toward justice for the voters.

On the Earl Ingram Show, Earl is joined by John Diedrich from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to discuss his article regarding a woman who's son accidentally shot himself in the hand with her gun. They talk about the effect that her charges have had on her life and the racial disparities surrounding youth gun injuries and deaths.

Finally, on Matenaer On Air, US Representative Mark Pocan joins the show to talk about the tragic shooting in Madison and discusses some of the paths which need to be taken to try to create change. He also reveals a horrendous truth about news, and the need for more deaths to be deemed "important to cover".

Lessons and Legacies (Hour 1)

December 18, 2024

Matt Rothschild and Angela Lang, Executive Director of BLOC, guest cohost today.

US Rep Mark Pocan (D, WI-02) joins Matt and Angela at the top of the hour to discuss where we are, where we've been, and where we're going. They're big topics, and worth exploring. The three begin with a somber reflection on the Abundant Life Christian School mass shooting on Monday. Then, they move into where the Democratic party needs to move to retain voters and attract new demographics.

At the bottom of the hour, Farmer Hans Breitenmoser joins Matt and Angela for a talk on representation and immigration. What lessons did we learn from the fight for fairer maps in Wisconsin? And what lessons do we need to learn in this fight over immigration that President-elect Trump is waging?

Join Dom Salvia every afternoon from 4-6pm for news (some), humor (more), and great conversation (always)! Listen throughout the state of Wisconsin on the Civic Media network and worldwide on the Civic Media app. Call or text to join the fun at 855-752-4842.

The Price We Pay…?!? (Hour 1)

December 17, 2024

If you're a reader of The Onion, then you know about yesterday's tragic shooting in Madison, but as always, we have those in power who don't want to listen to the will of the people, even when we agree overwhelmingly on the matter. We also listen to clips from one of the greatest interviews regarding firearms and an elected official. We then welcome Congressman Mark Pocan to the show to talk about what happened in Madison, as well as the USPS, a favorite topic of the Representative.

Any Green Shoots? (Hour 2)

December 6, 2024

We’ll ask Congressman Mark Pocan if there are any signs of “green shoots” in the upcoming new session Congress, little signs that some kind of bipartisan action could sprout amidst a desert of Republican infighting and obstruction. And we’ll have former US Attorney Jim Santelle on how Donald Trump’s picks for top law enforcement posts will damage an independent judiciary.

Her political ads are a welcome dose of positive vibes in a swamp of negativity. And Congressman Mark Pocan makes his regular monthly visit and he’ll pull no punches when we ask him about colleagues like Rep. Derrick Van Orden and Sen. Ron Johnson who voted against helping make sure FEMA can help the victims of hurricanes past and very near future.

More Shutdown Games (Hour 2)

September 11, 2024

We start this month’s visit from Congressman Mark Pocan with a simple question: Why are House Republicans once again playing games with a potential government shutdown at the end of this month—this time over non-citizen voting, something that’s already part of the law? And UpNorthNews reporter Elisabeth Montemurro attended a roundtable for women in Wauwatosa about reproductive healthcare rights—including one complaint about a congressman dismissing her concerns.

Next, Trygve Olson from The Lincoln Project joins Pat Kreitlow on UpNorthNews to explain how a group of Never-Trump Republicans is reacting to a generational passing of the torch by Democrats and how that might help GOP traditionalists take their party back and protect democracy in the process.

Finally, we end the week Nite Lite's Pete Schwaba is joined by Marta Hansen, piano technician and owner of The Piano Gal Shop and local musicians/songwriter. Marta preforms a song live in studio, shares what goes into owning a Piano shop, and what Marta's got coming up.

Uncomfortable Confrontations (Hour 2)

We have two different guest segments based on a theme of uncomfortable confrontations. Congressman Mark Pocan will talk about the awkward three weeks that Democrats weighed the viability of President Biden’s reelection bid. And we’ll review the flawed argument used to justify voucher schools with Derek Gottlieb, an associate professor at the University of Northern Colorado, who’s coming to Wisconsin next week to make his case.
