Dr. Johnny Lupinacci
Creating Belonging
Are you ready to go back to school? More importantly, are you ready to get back to education and learning? Dr. Johnny and Producer Jess talk about all it takes to get back into a learning space where each learner feels valued, respected, and ready to participate. Dr. Johnny walks us through the most important steps in preparing to lead a class: checking in on yourself as the teacher. He shares some of the rituals and texts that help him start school sessions on a strong foot. Centrally, he focuses on reviewing the Rights of the Child and those good core democratic values we highlight every day on Busted Pencils.

Thank goodness it’s Friday, that’s nothing trivial!
Goodness this week passed in a blink, and yet we covered SO MUCH! Thank goodness it's Busted Pencils Friday, when we get to break it down. This week, we soaked in the radical joy that returned to politics with the Harris-Walz ticket. We talked professional ethics- this week's anchoring lesson from On Tyranny- from classroom to boardroom to situation room. And today we get Tim's Trivia, delivered in a riddle... sort of... Plus, a new lesson from from the 20th Century to focus our thoughts next week.

The Right to be a Uuuman*, A Social Studies Lesson
Today, we're talking human needs and human excellence. First off, checking in on the Olympics- an important opportunity for multi-cultural exchanges. And an excellent chance to promote diversity, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. AND the Olympics provide ample teaching moments for two educated social studies educators.
Then, a social studies lesson in honor of the newest Vice Presidential nominee, Coach Tim Walz. Frequent caller LA Tom has brought up FDR's "second Bill of Rights" several times this week. Just what is the second bill of rights? Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny do what they do best: educate.
*Tim's Pittsburgh roots turn "human" into "uuuman"

Harris-Walz: Make America Joyful Again
Joy- pure radiant jubilant joy- returns to American politics with the announcement of Tim Walz as Kamala Harris' VP pick. Who could have guessed three weeks ago that we would be so excited for the 2024 Presidential election? Who would have guessed that public education would rise to such prominence in this race? Well, Dr. Johnny Lupinacci called that second one back in January. On the matter of joy, we're all very pleasantly surprised. Now we get to work advocating for education, for professional ethics, and yes, for joy.

Beyond “Weird”
What would Matt Damon's mom think of calling Trump and JD Vance "weird"? Well, we asked her! On the one hand, weird is a loaded word, especially for those in the LGBTQ+ community and all those who've been saddled with the term in childhood or beyond. On the other hand, countering a bully requires flexibility to adapt and match their style. Plus, using the word offers an opportunity to reclaim and redirect it. Like most everything, there's nuance here, and we embrace healthy discussion and debate around it!

TG- and I can’t emphasize this enough- IBPF
It's Friday, and we're all back together (virtually) again! Johnny rejoins Tim and Jess to wrap up a busy week of educated educators talking hella education. Wrapping up the week, we check in on our lesson, of 20, from the 20th Century on not obeying in advance. Next week, we'll focus on lesson #5: remember professional ethics. Tune in to hear about professional ethics from classroom to situation room. And for the second week in a row, Tim's Trivia stumps us. Ah, maybe next week!

Teaching In Times of Crisis
When historical events unfold, teachers must teach. Today, Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny talk about how to address big historical moments- events that often feel like or ARE crises- in the classroom. They emphasize the need to build regular moments of genuine connection into daily routines. When these exist, teachers have a strong base of trust with their students, and students feel comfortable to share their fears and experiences during those critical moments. More than that, having built-in time for addressing current events in a safe environment means that teachers need not abandon curriculum in trying times- deviate, certainly, but never abandon.

Unity, not Uniformity
The clock and the calendar say it's not yet been a week but boy, it feels like it's been at least a year since President Biden announced the end of his re-election campaign. In the months (er, days???) following, we've been exhilarated with the new sense of unity that has blossomed after a storm of division. That unity doesn't mean we are uniform, and in fact, what we're seeing and hearing is a strong commitment to valuing the diversity that strengthens our democracy. Today, in addition to breaking down our week of democracy in all the action, reviewing this week's lesson from On Tyranny, and getting stumped by Tim's Trivia, we're examining some options for the Vice Presidential nominee.

It is time to push each other forward, not down.
Sometimes, in the words of Dr. Johnny Lupinacci, we have to have a little bit of a backbone with our solidarity. What does that mean? It means it's time to compare some options for the VP slot on Kamala Harris' presidential ticket. Over the next few weeks, we'll hear a lot of comparison and contrast as the final Democratic ticket forms. On Busted Pencils, we are committed to hearing and facilitating healthy debate. It's part of how we're modeling this week's lesson, of Timothy Snyder's 20 - # 12: make small talk.
