Good morning, I'm Wayne Mauser for Civic Media News.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley beat outside Representative Francesca Hong in a tight race for the Democratic nomination for governor.
Crowley became the party's lead candidate despite initially dropping out of the race.
After relaunching his campaign, he was quickly endorsed by Governor Tony Evers.
Despite that, the race was only decided by a few thousand votes.
Crowley will advance to take on Republican U.S.
Representative Tom Tiffany in November in an open election that could test the limits of Progressive's appeal in a critical battleground state.
Tiffany easily advanced on Tuesday, defeating Andrew Manskey.
Winnebago County Circuit Court Judge Scott Wolt is the target of an official judicial misconduct complaint filed by the Wisconsin Judicial Commission.
The complaint was filed last week.
It lays out several instances where Judge Wolt is accused of, quote, woeful judicial misconduct, unquote.
According to the complaint, during a March 2023 interview on the Eye on Oshkosh YouTube show, he joked that when he's recognized in public
He tells people he's a quote sensational engineer on quote because he quote deals with society's garbage on quote several allegations stem from his reelection in 2023 when he allegedly confronted several local attorneys at a local happy hour because they backed his opponent in another instance He's accused of berating a public defender the complaint details several other allegations the judicial commission concluded the actions constitute willful judicial misconduct the commission
has requested a three judge panel be appointed to recommend discipline.
The State's Department of Transportation tells us about an intersection closure in New London in Wapaka County.
That intersection is the south half of the intersection of State Highway 54 at County D or North Chano Street.
It will be closed next Monday at 6 a.m.
and reopened by September 14.
The north half of the intersection will be reopened the same day.
There may be a short time when both sections are closed on Monday morning to facilitate the moving of the traffic control devices.
State Highway 54 will
remain open throughout the project.
In a second community grant cycle of the year, Align Energy and the Align Energy Foundation awarded $708,599 to various causes and nonprofits across Iowa and Wisconsin.
40 communities were awarded $130,000 for improvements to emergency services.
Organizations in 30 communities that provide household essentials, food assistance through food pantries, meal outreach and delivery programs were awarded over $210,000.
$1,000 in grants.
Nearly $90,000 was awarded to 15 communities for conservation projects.
More than $255,000 in grants and scholarships were awarded to support programs that help prepare future generations for success.
Scammers are now using video calls as they pose as a representative of your bank or financial firm.
Bob Nelson reports for Civic Media News.
Sometimes they come as cold calls, other times they're text asking and consumers to call a provided phone number.
They will tell you they need to verify the consumer's identity.
They will then switch to a video call.
The scammer then asked the consumer to point the camera at their computer screen while they log on to their online account or screen share on their cell phone.
Michelle Reinen is the administrator for the state's division of trade and
consumer protection.
Because of everything that's happening and how quickly this moves, a consumer may not even realize that they're exposing that information because they think they're getting help from a legitimate representative from that financial institution.
She says real bank representatives will never ask to see a consumer's password or financial numbers.
Pressure to act quickly is also a red flag for a scam.

A Rippin woman was among those honored by the State's Department of Health Services last week with awards recognizing exceptional work to prevent and reduce the impact of alcohol, commercial tobacco and other drugs in their communities.
The DHS selected the award winners from a pool of 100 nominations submitted statewide.
Kelsey Adams of Rippin was honored with beyond the call to action outstanding substance use prevention professional award.
The award recognizes a substance use prevention professional for work that engages members of their community and empowers them to live their best life.
Kelsey is the Green Lakes site coordinator for the Boys and Girls Club of the Tri-County area.
In this role, she helps youth of all ages develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to live substance free.
Awards were presented at the Wisconsin Substance Use Summit in Green Bay.

Before Tuesday's primary, polling head Francesca Hong is a clear favorite in the Democratic primary for governor.
On election night, David Crowley, who had dropped out of the race on July 8th, then re-entered nine days later with the endorsement of current Governor Tony Evers, held narrow leads for most of the night while totals were being reported.
It wasn't until Milwaukee County's delayed reporting of over 24,000 absentee ballots that the race was called in favor of Crowley early Wednesday morning.
In addition to Milwaukee County, server issues in Winnebago and Green County's
also delayed the reporting of final vote tallies well into Wednesday.
Crowley will face Republican Tom Tiffany in this fall's general election.
Plenty of attention was on Northern Wisconsin's two contested primaries in Congressional District 7, which became an open seat when Tom Tiffany decided to run for governor.
Republican Michael Alfonso, the son-in-law of former Wisconsin Congressman and current Trump administration cabinet member Sean Duffy, cleared the field and will face Democrat Fred Clark.
Meanwhile, in Western Wisconsin, it'll be a rematch between Republican Congressman Derek Van Orden and
Democrat Rebecca Cook in the state's third congressional district.
The Madison police officer who shot and killed Corey Ruiz last month is being officially identified.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice says Keele Badinger Peterson was injured by Ruiz with a knife during an attempted arrest on July 22nd and then fired his weapon at Ruiz.
The deadly encounter led to protests at Williamson and Baldwin streets, including an encampment that lasted until last week.
Badinger Peterson has been with the Madison Police Department for more than 10 years and hasn't been involved with use of deadly force
in the past.
The last group of beagles at Ridgland Farms will be out of the facility tomorrow.
Big Dog Ranch Rescue says the final 155 dogs will be released from Blue Mounds, most of which are puppies believed to be just a few months old.
This departure will mark the end of a mission by rescue groups to have all dogs leave Ridgland Farms, a mission that began back in April.
Big Dog Ranch Rescue mentioned it has rescued more than 2,100 beagles from the facility to date.

It was a year ago that Love played the Jets in a
preseason game and ended up needing surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb.
Obviously, what happened last year sucked.
It was very tough.
You know, I'm glad the timeline was what it was and I was able to be good for week one.
But definitely one of those things you got to take consideration going into preseason area.
So I think the plan is to play some limited role this week.

Well, we have a number of guests.
We're gonna start out with Brian Riley.
Who's the director?

Good morning.
So you have a pretty big cast you were telling me
We have roughly 40 actors in the show.
I believe it's just a little over 40, including 18 actors playing orphans ranging from 10 to I believe around 13 or 14 within the orphan cast.
And then we have additional actors playing combinations of servants and Hooverville citizens and a couple of
Cabinet members because we also have president Roosevelt featured in the show.
So we have a whole crowd of people
Okay So this takes place in the 1930s based on the comic strip, right?
Correct.
So this is based on little orphan Annie Which as I recall was it was actually kind of originated from the raggedy Andal and then turned into a comic strip which then became a
a stage musical about little orphan Annie who gets adopted, taken in by the industrialist Oliver Warbucks, otherwise known as Daddy Warbucks.
And so we get to see her trials and tribulations.
She gets to adopt a stray dog and go head to head with the wicked Miss Hannigan who oversees the orphanage and
is just she's just so mean she just makes them scrub the scrub the orphanage and uh so dresses and things for you know for her own benefit um so that yeah that's that's the gist of the the story
okay so we have Emily Clemens who's playing Annie and she's about to write age range but do you have okay you'll have to take that microphone there Emily
Do you have to wear like a red wig, or can you use your own hair in this?
I am wearing a red wig.
Yeah?
How do you like that?
It's not the most comfortable, but my hair is obviously not red enough to look like
Amy.
But from what I'm hearing, you're equipped with the voice for Annie,
right?
Do
you like to sing?
I love to sing.
Yeah, okay.
Yeah.
Do you like some of the songs that you get to do?
Yeah,
most of
them I really like.
Most of the ones I don't like I'm not in.
Okay.
I mean how does it feel to basically take center stage?
It's actually really cool because it's like a really good opportunity because I feel like I've gotten like really good roles before but I've never like
Had to like kind of come out of my shell for like acting.
It's usually I'm like one type of rule.
Okay.
All right Now on the other hand, we're gonna talk to Todd Mockmiller here and Todd you made the sacrifice.
I mean For daddy Warbucks you you went the role you got your head shaved,
huh?
Yeah, I figured if I'm gonna play the part of my as well look the part
Now you had actually had a family member that helped you with that or
yeah, my daughter Holly does Does hair in Brookfield and she said daddy.
It's time.
So I she buzzed my hair and I took my razor to it when she was done
Is this your first time in theater
my very first time
Wow Okay, and I'm scared to

So they literally found you at the school and they said all right, you're gonna be an actor
My wife and a couple of teachers talked me into it
Okay.
Now also with us, we have a Grace Bartlett and Grace, you are, you are playing, well, the meaning in the role, Miss Hannigan, right?
Yeah.
Now
you're going to have to speak up because that mic's a little bit soft spoken.
So, um,
Have you done any theater before this?
Yeah, I did theaters around middle school and high school, and then a couple of community shows in Fond du Lac, but this is my first time doing it with Ripon, or at least doing their musical.
I was
in their
play that they did before Annie, so.
Yeah.
How do you like playing, well, the bad guy, basically?
It's definitely a change from roles that I've done before, but...
I think it's so cool being on the opposite end of roles.
I just came off of playing Annie, or not Annie, Amy March in Little Women and so being like a little kid and then going to this mean old rotten lady like definitely messed with my brain chemistry trying to adapt to the role but it's been like the most fun that I've had ever in
theater.

I have to ask you about the wardrobe because you're you're basically costuming people from the 1930s.
Who do you have doing that for
you?
So we have a very talented and well organized costumer by the name of Perrigan Schultz.
She's taken under this task and has done a tremendous job.
Luckily, this is a the 1930s.
It's definitely more vintage.
but it's still comparatively contemporary clothes.
So, especially having just done Shrek for the middle school earlier in the spring, which Emily was also in, we don't have two wacky of costumes, although there is a character called wacky in the show.
But, yeah, the costumes, it's mostly suits and dresses and...
all of that.
So a lot of that is off the rack, but it's definitely been a herculean undertaking that Peregrine has definitely met the match to.
So we're very lucky to have her involved.
A lot of the songs from the musical Annie are pretty well known.
Maybe you should name drop a few of them for us if you would.
Oh, you put me on the spot.
It's kind of a hard knock life to try to figure that out.
Maybe I can think of one or two, but
Um, maybe ask me tomorrow.
So, um, yeah, those, those are a few that if you caught that, we have, we have, of course, the tomorrow, which Emily does a tremendous job at belting out, uh, the first time singing to her, uh, to her stray dog, Sandy that she finds out on the street played by Emily's brother, Everett, who's also doing a tremendous job.
Uh, and then of course, hard knock life.
I think most people are familiar with Annie, are aware of Hard Knock Life, and boy, do the orphan chorus really knock that one out of the park.
That was not a hard one for them to master, and they really do a tremendous job with that.
And then, I think one of my favorites might be...
We like to thank you Herbert Hoover, which is sung by the Hooverville cast for those that aren't familiar in the 1930s after the stock market crash during the Great Depression.
You had a lot of displaced people that many of them in New York were setting up shantytowns in Central Park and throughout the city.
And so you have these homeless folks that Annie runs into and they go into this number
Thank you thinking sarcastically Herbert Hoover for how how they live today and it's it's fun.
It's you know very sarcastic and It should be good.
It should be really good, but the the cast does a really great job with all of their numbers

And after COVID, we started doing musicals.
