Wisconsin Farm Bureau and Farmers Union groups hosted a virtual town hall Thursday with the two candidates running for Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District.
Republican Michael Alfonso and Democrat Fred Clark answered questions about rising costs, tariffs, labor shortages, and the future of family farms.
Both were asked what they believe is the biggest challenge facing Wisconsin agriculture over the next 5 to 10 years.
Alfonso said its affordability.
The cost of everything is skyrocketing.
Thanks to the last
administration, the Joe Biden administration, where we had 9% peak inflation.
The worst inflation we've had in over 40 years, farms are shutting down.
They cannot handle this level of inflation.
Alfonso said he wants to lower operating costs and eliminate the federal estate tax for families passing farms down to the next generation.
Clark said consolidation in agribusiness is a major concern.
He called for stronger antitrust laws and enforcement to address the power of large agricultural companies.
And
The candidates were also asked how Congress could help the next generation of farmers get started.
Alfonso called for lowering startup costs for young farmers and reducing capital gains taxes for farmers selling land to other farmers.
Because at the end of the day, I want more family farms and I will support any program that will bring more of them.

Plagued by penalties, the pack lost 20 to 17.

The property is in the township of Sumter.

Authorities found and arrested the suspect shortly after arriving at the scene.
The motive behind the fire is still under investigation.
The Madison Common Council has voted to terminate interim independent police monitor Arameek Glass.
The move comes following weeks of controversy over her job performance outlined in an employment review from the city attorney's office.
That review states Glass had made no meaningful progress in searching for a permanent monitor after nearly 10 months with no approved job description, posting, or interviews.
It also cited a missed July 17 budget deadline, strained relationships with Madison police, and an open
outside investigation into complaints about Glass's own conduct.
Wisconsin's measles outbreak has topped 300.
Health officials reported 43 new cases over the last 10 days, bringing the total to 310 cases.
Most cases are in southwestern Wisconsin, with Lafayette County reporting 103 confirmed or probable infections.
Northern Wisconsin has reported 34 confirmed cases across Chippewa and Marathon counties.
Health officials warn fewer reported cases do not necessarily mean the outbreak is slowing and actual infections could be higher.
With the opening of the gun deer hunt less than a month away, 55 of Wisconsin's 72 counties now have chronic wasting disease, according to the DNR.
Wildlife officials say a three-year-old buck on a deer farm in Taylor County is among the most recent detections of the disease.
That farm will remain in quarantine while government veterinary staff work to identify and control the disease outbreak.
If you're a jerky lover in Wisconsin, you might want to check your pantry.
1,000 pounds of beef jerky is being recalled across Wisconsin and six other Midwest states.
The USDA says the products were produced without federal inspection.
Health officials warn that uninspected meat products can pose risks, including bacterial contamination and undisclosed allergens.
The recall affects three varieties of two-ounce sealed bags.
Imperial Fuego Beef Jerky, Imperial Original Beef Jerky, and Imperial Limone Beef Jerky.
If you have any of these products, health officials say you shouldn't eat it, but throw it away or return it to the place where you bought it.
