The two candidates running for Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District met last Wednesday for what could be their only debate before the November election.
Republican Michael Alfonso and Democrat Fred Clark faced off in a debate hosted by WDIO TV in Duluth, Minnesota.
Among the issues discussed was Enbridge's Line 5 Pipeline, which has faced renewed scrutiny following a major natural gas-liquid spill in Iron County and environmental concerns surrounding construction of its reroute around the
bad river reservation.
When Alfonso expressed support for he also said protecting Lake's forests and farmland at the expense of building you
know, line five is one of t costs down for every singl whether it's just a sec and I say if you truly w come down, how can you not
Earlier in the debate, Alfonso had also accused Clark of opposing Line 5.
Clark disputed that claim and said his concerns were with Enbridge's environmental record, particularly the risk to the Lake Superior watershed.
I have put out a statement calling on the Wisconsin DNR to hold the Enbridge company accountable for the set of environmental problems that they've had, including one of the largest pipeline spills, in fact, the largest pipeline spill in Wisconsin history.
This company has not operated in good faith.
And until they're willing to do that, we need the state to hold them accountable and stop work until there are reforms.
Because the risk of a spill in the Lake Superior watershed and the Bad River watershed into Lake Superior is extraordinarily high and the environmental impact of that.
would affect this area for generations.
Clark also called for federal oversight of where pipelines are built.
Other topics included healthcare, housing, data centers, and more.

Governor Tony Evers is leading a lawsuit against the Trump administration over unemployment insurance systems.
In a statement released Friday, the Evers administration said the Trump administration, without notice, made the decision to terminate millions of dollars in funding to prevent fraud and implement improvements in Wisconsin and other state's unemployment insurance systems.
The governor's office said Evers sent multiple letters urging for the funds to be released, including a letter sent directly to Trump, and that they have gone largely unanswered.
The Trump administration said the U.S.
Department of Labor terminated the investments because it, quote, does not effectuate agency priorities, end quote.
Weekends don't get much better in Wisconsin with summer-like temperatures at the peak of autumn splendor for much of the state and a decisive Packers win over their longtime rival, Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field.
Top it all off with the Brewers one step closer to the World Series with the win over the daunting Dodgers in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series.
Today's temps won't make it any easier to get back into the work week with another warm sunny day before rains move in over much of the state tonight.
details coming up in weather.
A long-awaited trial begins today in the case of a seven-year-old Manitowoc County boy found dead after allegedly being buried in a snowbank as punishment.
A jury trial is scheduled for Timothy Housholtz, the great uncle and guardian of the boy.
Housholtz is accused of ordering the punishment, which led to 7-year-old Ethan Housholtz's death in April of 2018.
According to the criminal complaint, the boy was being punished for not adequately knowing 13 Bible verses.
The complaint says Housholtz ordered his teenage son Damien to supervise the punishment.
The complaint goes on to say Damien stood on the boy's body and head while he was facedown in a puddle and then buried him in a
about 80 pounds of packed snow without a coat or boots.
Damien Hauschilds pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in June of 2021 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
A judge has since added five more years of supervision after the prison term.
Neither parent was home at the time of Ethan's death.
A security incident at a Wisconsin pumpkin patch over the weekend led to one person being arrested in Kenosha.
According to a statement released by the Jerry Smith pumpkin farm in Kenosha, on-site security
responded quickly and detained the person until law enforcement arrived.
Details regarding what exactly led to the security response Friday night haven't been released by law enforcement.
The Packers came out on top yesterday in a victory made even more sweet because it was against longtime rival Chicago Bears.
But in a moment of true sportsmanship, fans on both sides of this bitter rivalry paused together in a moment of silence, honoring former Bears head coach Mike Ditka.
Ditka, who personified the Bears franchise for many, died Friday at the age of 86.
Perhaps the most notable tribute came in the stands rather than on the sidelines, in the sea of blue number 89 jerseys worn by many Bears fans who made the trip to Green Bay.
