Bayfield County has approved a new program that will provide $1 million to support local ambulance services next year.
According to the Ashland Daily Press, the county board unanimously approved the EMS Performance Assistance Program last week.
It follows a decision in July to put money toward existing ambulance providers rather than contract for a separate backup ambulance service.
The funding will go to the county's towns, cities, villages, and the Redcliffe Band, which will then direct
the money to their EMS providers.
Half of the funding will be distributed based on population, while the other half will be based on ambulance call volume.
Communities will also have to meet several requirements, including maintaining their local EMS funding at or above 2026 levels and participating in a new countywide coverage system designed to help dispatch when a local ambulance service is unavailable.
The program begins in January and will run through the end of 2027.
Governor Tony Evers has announced more than $152 million in state transportation aid has been distributed to counties and municipalities across Wisconsin.
The fourth quarter payments were delivered October 5th and will help local governments repair, maintain and improve local roads and connecting highways.
More than $142 million was distributed through the state's General Transportation Aids Program.
Another $4.3 million went to 116 municipalities
through connecting highway aids, with about 5.3 million going to Milwaukee County for expressway policing.
The funding was included in the 2025-2027 state budget signed into law last year.
The latest round closes out transportation aid payments for 2026.
In total, local governments received more than $570 million in general transportation aids this year.
A breakdown of payments to individual counties and municipalities is available through the Wisconsin Department of
Transportation's website.

President Trump has approved nearly $18 million in disaster relief for Wisconsin.
He made the announcement on Truth Social Wednesday while reaffirming his endorsement for Governor Candidate Tom Tiffany.
In his post, he said, quote, the people are tough and smart and will come back stronger than ever.
This comes after Governor Evers formally requested a federal disaster declaration from the president following severe storms and a tornado that swept through the state in July.
Madison's mayor is proposing a budget for 2027 that includes a $7 monthly property tax increase for average homeowners.
The mayor says state restrictions forced cities to rely too heavily on property taxes to fund essential local services.
Under her plan, the city would avoid major service cuts thanks to grant adjustments by Metro Transit while funding new positions in violence prevention and public safety.
City workers would also receive a 3% cost of living pay raise.
The Common Council will review and vote on the final budget plan next month.
We've got quite a weekend coming up for Wisconsin sports fans.
The Milwaukee Brewers will host the Dodgers in Milwaukee on Sunday for Game 1 in the National Championship Series.
If the Brew Crew comes out on top in this series, they'll head to their first World Series in more than four decades.
On the Gridiron, the storied rivalry between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears will play out at Lambeau Field also on Sunday.
Game time was moved to a noon kickoff from the original late afternoon start, a more prestigious network time slot.
The Packers' Bears rivalry is the oldest in the NFL, going back more than a century to their first meeting in 1921.
The Packers lead the all-time series with 109 wins to the Bears 98.
A 77-year-old was killed in Dodge County yesterday when sheriff's deputies say a semi flew through a stop sign and crashed into the man's car.
It happened in the town of Elba around 7 a.m.
yesterday morning.
The truck driver, a 28-year-old from Waterloo, Wisconsin, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
Authorities say a sheriff's officer was also taken to the same hospital after a driver hit their squad car, which then hit the officer who was helping with the investigation into the initial crash.
Sheriff's officials stressed the
importance of paying attention to the roadway and avoiding distracted driving.
As we end the first full week of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, Wisconsin is seeing a small decline in domestic violence homicides, but advocates warn the numbers remain dangerously high.
A new report from End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin shows deaths dropped from a record 99 in 2024 to 82 last year.
Milwaukee County accounted for roughly half of those deaths, highlighting an ongoing crisis in the area.
Experts point out that most of the homicides were committed by men with firearms used in nearly three quarters of all cases.
Advocates say despite the minor dip, state totals are still far higher than they were a decade ago.
Wisconsin Supreme Court justices and county courthouses could get more security under a request for nearly $3 million in additional funding in the next state budget.
The proposal would keep four court protection jobs funded, add staffing in the Marshall's office, and provide $1.5 million in county security grants.
The state court's director says circuit court judges reported 129 security risks last year.
Lawmakers have rejected earlier requests for more court security, pointing to the presence of Capitol Police.
And that's your state news update.

Getting ready for game one, high on Mike Clemens with sports were the Brewers had some batting practice tomorrow before Sunday night at Ampham Field against the Dodgers for the National League pennant.

I think what this bullpen has done all year is pick each other up.
We trust each other with the ball.
I know if I get two runners on, DL, Abner, McGill, our
behind me and the bullpen to take a deep breath and, you know, trust who they have behind us.
There's no difference.
I just think it all comes down to who wanted the most.
You know, for me, I mean, I played on both sides.
I got drafted here.
So obviously I want to go out there and put my best foot forward
