Governor Tony Evers and the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin have announced the distribution of nearly $60 million to communities across the state to expand access to high-speed internet.
According to a press release, the funding through the state broadband expansion grant program is meant to support the deployment of broadband infrastructure to underserved areas of the state.
This round of grant funding will go to support 46 projects across Wisconsin, providing new or improved internet access to over 18,000 locations.
A number of organizations in western Wisconsin will receive a portion of that grant funding.
Mosaic Technologies received one of the largest funding awards at nearly $4 million to expand broadband access to over 800 locations in Chippewa and Clark counties.
Pierce-Peppin Cooperative Services will also receive over $2 million in grant funding for over 800 locations in Eau Claire, Jackson, Clark, Trumplow, and La Crosse counties, and 24-7 Telcom received over $100,000 to serve nearly 50 locations in Chippewa, Dunn, and St.
Croix counties.
The City of Eau Claire will consider its budget proposal for 2027 next week.
The proposal calls for a total budget of just over $198 million, about $630,000 less than the 2026 budget.
The cutback comes as the city continues working to address a projected $2.2 million deficit caused by increasing costs and overall inflation outpacing revenue.
The city council plans to hold public discussion on the budget proposal at their meeting on Monday, and they could vote to officially adopt it at their meeting on Tuesday.

Police say they now know where the rogue drone came from that interrupted the Packers game last week, but that's about all they're saying.
The drone paused the action in the third quarter of the Packers home game against the Panthers last Thursday night.
Both teams were pulled off the field with the Packers facing third and one while the network took a commercial break.
The announcers said there was a rogue drone inside the stadium.
After the break, the Packers resumed their drive, scoring a touchdown in the first play back.
Green Bay Police say they've identified an operator connected to that drone but didn't release a name in their update yesterday.
They say they're working with the FBI, FAA, and U.S.
Attorney's Office in reviewing the matter.
Police also shared a link to FAA drone restrictions for stadiums and sporting events.
With the holidays just around the corner and Wisconsin's first
death related to measles, state health officials say it's more important now than ever to protect yourself from this highly contagious disease.
Ryan Westergaard is an infectious disease doctor with UW Health in Madison.
Westergaard says the baby who died was less than a year old.
It's the first measles-related fatality in our state in more than three decades.
Right now the health department has 431 confirmed cases of measles in 13 counties across the state.
Westergaard says while that may not seem like a lot considering the state's population,
It's important to remember what it was like before we had a measles vaccine.
In the era before vaccines, the percentage of people who would get infected with measles was approximately 100%.
It's so effectively transmitted.
And when that happens, the number of severe cases and hospitalizations and death was not rare.
It was very common.
So a disease that can spread that quickly can't go from a small problem to a big problem very quickly.
Fondalek police say they may have stopped a mass shooting after receiving a tip that a 15-year-old was making threats to that effect online.
The investigation began late last month after a tipster from overseas reported concerning online interactions with the teen to the FBI's National Threat Operations Center.
Detectives searched the teen's home the next day, seizing several guns, a computer, and a cell phone.
Authorities took the teen to the Fondalek Secure Detention Facility on charges of terrorist threats and disorderly conduct.
Because the case involves a minor, police aren't releasing identifying details.

Badgers volleyball team fell behind, then rallied to beat Michigan State three sets to one last night in Madison.
Coach Kelly Sheffield.
It wasn't the prettiest match, but it was two teams that were working through it in Green Bay.
The Girls State High School volleyball tournament continues at the Rush Center.
The finals are tomorrow and if the Packers Jordan Love throws a touchdown Sunday against New England, it'll be the 100th of his career, putting him on a pace with Farb
and Rogers 100.
We were touching our path.
Cool stat, but my job is to go out there and be the best player.
If you throw for a lot of yards, if you don't, I just want to go out there.
The main goal is to win the game.
That's Jordan Love with sports on Mike
Clemens.
