Local small business owners gathered at Shift in downtown Eau Claire on Tuesday morning for a roundtable discussion on the challenges they're facing amid federal tariff policies and affordability concerns.

The event, organized by Opportunity Wisconsin, featured three local business owners sharing how those issues have impacted their services.

Eau Claire Outdoor's owner, Kate Felton, was one of those individuals and highlighted how small business owners consider balancing tariff-driven price changes with trying to keep their goods affordable for customers.

These are not thoughts that corporations have.

These are the worries of a small business owner that's living in their own community and thinking about the customers and loving their customers.

And I think that that's worth something to have somebody making that, having thoughts like that.

And why isn't that being rewarded?

James Kelly

Felt an experience that dilemma firsthand earlier this year, deciding to close her Eau Claire Outdoors retail location because price increases from suppliers became too much to avoid passing them on to customers.

Eau Claire City Council member Clara Serrano also participated in the round table noting how limited shared revenue from the state has made it more difficult for municipalities to provide support for those small businesses.

So much of what we have had to do is shift costs and last night at our city council our finance director showed us how much the state used to fund of our city of our municipal budget you know the percentage and it's you know.

a fraction now as compared with 15 years ago of what the state funds in terms of city services.

And so the city has to just trim, trim, trim, trim, trim.

James Kelly

Serrano also highlighted how other issues like a lack of affordable housing, higher fuel prices and increasing healthcare costs are negatively impacting small businesses, leaving potential customers with less disposable income to patronize those businesses with.

Wisconsin has joined 19 other states in suing the Dollar General Corporation.

The lawsuit alleges the company is engaging in long-running deceptive pricing practices by routinely charging customers more at the register than the prices displayed on the shelves, price tags, and advertisements.

Attorney General Josh Call said in a statement that the prices people see when they're shopping should be the same prices they're charged.

The complaint alleges that thousands of Dollar General stores have taken advantage of shoppers by extracting millions of dollars

in unlawful overcharges.

The company also allegedly received tens of thousands of consumer complaints, but did nothing about it.

It's on to Game 5 in the World Series for the Brewers after losing to the Rays last night in Tampa Bay.

The crew is still on top, winning three of the seven-game series.

The first team to win four takes the World Series title.

An Oshkosh Middle School teacher arrested by ICE agents earlier this month is awaiting deportation.

According to federal agents, immigration and custom enforcement agents arrested Wendy Mendes in Milwaukee on October 14.

Mendes came to the U.S.

from Costa Rica in 2020 and, according to ICE, was supposed to leave the country six months later.

The Oshkosh Area School District website lists Mendes as an English speaker of other languages teacher at Vell Phillips Middle School.

In letter to parents and families, district officials say

Mendes is an employee in good standing and is on unpaid administrative leave due to unforeseen circumstances.

Mendes was named an Ostrash School District Employee of the Year in 2025.

A special education teacher and assistant activities director at Green Bay's Preble High School has resigned after the district saw social media posts alleging inappropriate text messages to a former student.

The district placed Joey Demorathon leave earlier this month.

The parents of Wisconsin native Alex Pretty are fighting for accountability from the federal government nine months after their son was shot and killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis.

Michael and Susan Pretty say the Justice Department violated their son's rights and have been fighting for months.

to get the federal government to turn over evidence.

Pretty was a graduate of Green Bay's Preble High School who worked as an ICU nurse with the VA in Minneapolis.

He was shot and killed on January 7th during widespread protests against the killing of Renee Good.

The Pretties say the federal government failed to provide the information needed for a full investigation.

Under federal rules, the Justice Department has discretion of what evidence it shares.

No agents have been criminally charged.

It's on to game five in the World Series for the Brewers after losing to the Rays last night in Tampa Bay.

The crew is still on top, winning three of the seven-game series.

The first team to win four takes the World Series title.

Contest organizers say more than 100 products were nominated this year.

The top four runners-up included an electric rope shovel made by Kumatsu in Milwaukee, a zero-turn lawnmower with commercial grade strength, and a blacked-out tactical design made by Aaron's company in Brilliant, and a high-tech smart scope made for the Army by Vortex Optics.

in Barneveld.

Now in its 11th year, the contest aims to highlight Wisconsin's vibrant manufacturing industry.

The industry contributes more than $70 billion to the state's economy each year.

The last blaze of fall colors are still on display in parts of our state, and today might be the perfect time to get out and get one last glimpse, if you can, with record high temps expected to move north from the southwestern part of our state throughout the day into the 70s.

And that's your state news update.

Game 5 of the World Series tonight.

Hi, I'm Mike Cummins with Sports Baseball.

The Brewers hadn't lost a game since early this month, but last night it was the raise Ben Williamson driving in the winning run, bottom of the 12th inning on Fox.

Five-man defense against Williamson.

Williamson, who has won for 15 in the playoffs against a five-man infield.

It's a bounding ball that skips over the top and extends Tampa Bay season.

Mike Clemens

You know, you're going through three innings to Ashby.

Nothing's going offensively.

They kept their heads up and we just kind of bought ourselves some time.
