Senator Bernie Sanders visited the Chippewa Valley over the weekend for a campaign event with Democratic Third Congressional District candidate Rebecca Cook.

The event at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire on Sunday sought to highlight a number of important issues ahead of the midterm election, including wealth inequality and healthcare affordability.

During his speech, Senator Sanders tried to put just how large the wealth inequality gap has become into perspective.

So you have

Kathryn Lake

an

economy in which the top 1% owns more wealth than the bottom 93%.

You have an economy in which Mr. Musk, the wealthiest guy on earth, himself...

on this more wealth than the bottom 53% of American households.

Does anybody think that that is what America's economy should be like?

James Kelly

He also spoke about the potential impacts of artificial intelligence, highlighting the negative effect it could have on the workforce, particularly in manufacturing, and whether humanity will be capable of controlling the technology as it continues to advance so rapidly.

If AI becomes smarter than human beings, will humanity be able to control AI or not?

And if we cannot control AI, they operate independently of human control, then what happens?

And the answer is nobody knows, but there are some very frightening prospects if that happens.

So in the midst of all of that,

I hope it's very radical, ideal, that maybe humanity should remain the dominant species on planet

Earth.

Senator Sanders has endorsed Cook in the midterm election, who will look to unseating incumbent Republican Congressman Derek Van Orden next week.

Even with running back Josh Jacobs making his presence known back on the football field, the Packers weren't able to tame the Lions yesterday in Detroit.

Plagued by penalties, the pack lost 20 to 17.

It'll be a quick turnaround as the team takes on the Carolina Panthers Thursday night at Lambeau.

Democratic candidate for Governor David Crowley kicked off his Let's Get to Work Wisconsin tour in Green Bay over the weekend.

Crowley's first stop through a packed house at the Brown County Democratic Party headquarters.

Close to 100 people crowded in to hear from Crowley, along with speakers from the rest of the Democratic ticket, including Governor Tony Evers, incumbent candidate for Attorney General Josh Call and others.

A key message to Wisconsin Democrats is to vote down the ticket on November 3rd.

Crowley's tour continued on to Appleton and Sheboygan San...

On Sunday, there were planned stops in Kiwani, Chano, and Marinette.

Salk County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man last Saturday night for allegedly starting a fire in the woods near Devil's Lake State Park.

Firefighters say they found a large fire spreading through the woods in an area inaccessible by traditional fire trucks.

The property is in the township of Sumter.

Fire crews from multiple agencies battled the blaze for more than an hour and a half with specialized ATVs and other equipment to bring it under control.

Authorities found and arrested the suspect shortly after arriving at the scene.

The motive behind the fire is still under investigation.

The Madison Common Council has voted to terminate interim independent police monitor Arameek Glass.

The move comes following weeks of controversy over her job performance outlined in an employment review from the city attorney's office.

That review states Glass had made no meaningful progress in searching for a permanent monitor after nearly 10 months with no approved job description, posting, or interviews.

It also cited a missed July 17 budget deadline, strained relationships with Madison police, and an open

outside investigation into complaints about Glass' own conduct.

Health officials reported 43 new cases over the last 10 days, bringing the total to 310 cases.

Most cases are in southwestern Wisconsin, with Lafayette County reporting 103 confirmed or probable infections.

Northern Wisconsin has reported 34 confirmed cases across Chippewa and Marathon counties.

Health officials warn fewer reported cases do not necessarily mean the outbreak is slowing and actual infections could be higher.

With the opening of the gun deer hunt less than a month away, 55 of Wisconsin's 72 counties now have chronic wasting disease, according to the DNR.

Wildlife officials say a three-year-old buck on a deer farm in Taylor County is among the most recent detections of the disease.

That farm will remain in quarantine while government veterinary staff work to identify and control the disease outbreak.

If you're a jerky lover in Wisconsin, you might want to check your pantry.

1,000 pounds of beef jerky is being recalled across Wisconsin and six other Midwest states.

The USDA says the products were produced without federal inspection.

Health officials warn that uninspected meat products can pose risks, including bacterial contamination and undisclosed allergens.

The recall affects three varieties of two-ounce sealed bags.

Imperial Fuego Beef Jerky, Imperial Original Beef Jerky, and Imperial Limone Beef Jerky.

If you have any of these products, health officials say you shouldn't eat it, but throw it away or return it to the place where you bought it.

A new $705 million dollar casino is officially open in southern Wisconsin.

Ho-Chunk Gaming Beloit welcomed its first guests Friday.

The casino features 1,300 slot machines and 33 table games, including Blackjack, Poker, and Roulette, plus several restaurants and lounges.

Tribal leaders say the casino represents a major investment expected to support local employment and economic development.

And that's your state news update.

I'm Connie Feldman for Civic Media News.
