Chippewa County Sheriff Travis Hakes has responded to a statement released by the district attorney's office declaring him no longer fit to continue serving in the role.
The statement released by Chippewa County District Attorney Wade Newell and signed by every assistant district attorney in the office, alleged that the prosecutors unanimously believe Sheriff Hakes does not meet the basic credibility standard necessary to continue as Sheriff.
The letter also highlighted Sheriff Hakes' placement on Chippewa County's Brady List, which is maintained to identify officers whose past actions could undermine their credibility in court.
The Chippewa County Board also passed a no-confidence vote in Sheriff Hakes in 2024, as well as another motion to receive information through the Chief Deputy instead.
In his own statement, Sheriff Hakes called the letter a calculated and last-minute political hit just weeks before the August primary election.
He also accused District Attorney Newell of adding him to the Brady List for political reasons and claimed he's never been given due process to challenge the basis of his addition to the list.

The new ordinance passed unanimously and increases the distance sex offenders must live from those locations as well as the distance they can loiter from them from 66 feet to 250 feet.
The approved ordinance also includes a provision stating that registered sex offenders who currently live within the extended range are grandfathered in and do not need to relocate.
As Eau Claire area families look to get outside with the wildfire smoke finally cleared out, City County Health Department officials are reminding them to check their website for beach conditions.
The department monitors water conditions for things like harmful bacteria and algae each week, issuing a closure or an advisory depending on their levels.
This week's testing showed high algae levels at Lake Altoona Beach and Lake Eau Claire Beach forcing their closures.
The other six monitored beaches, including Half Moon Beach and Riverview Beach, will all be open.

Well, we just shut this down.
You can stop talking because we don't want to hear anything you've been saying.

Sheriff's deputies say it appears the dog was shot several days before he was finally found on July 15th.
The Center for Humane Economy and the Wisconsin Puppy Milk Project announced a $2,500 reward yesterday for information that leads to an arrest.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Chano County Sheriff's Office.
Sunny is currently recovering at the Chano County Humane Society and already has a loving home lined up once he is medically cleared.
