The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has issued a formal notice of violation to Enbridge Energy Company over its Line 5 work in Iron and Ashland counties.
The notice involves alleged permit violations during construction of the Line 5 reroute, along with environmental law violations related to an unpermitted bypass built around the August 25th spill site near Saxon.
According to the notice of violation, the DNR cites several incidents during reroute construction, including multiple release
of drilling fluid into Vaughn Creek and nearby wetlands.
It also alleges that Enbridge placed timber matting in wetlands and temporary bridges over waterways without the required permits while building the bypass.
The notice also includes alleged air pollution violations related to the August spill when an unoccupied vehicle rolled into an excavation site and struck the existing Line 5 pipeline releasing natural gas liquids.
The DNR has scheduled an enforcement conference to discuss the alleged violations for October
26, following that meeting, the DNR could issue citations or refer the case to the Wisconsin Department of Justice for further enforcement action.
Civic media has reached out to Enbridge for comment but has not yet received a response.

Vandalism or an act of nature.
Civic Media's Maddie Schaefer has more on multiple fires destroying equipment for a controversial Northwood's pipeline.
An Enbridge
drill rig and support equipment were destroyed in a fire early Monday morning at a construction site along the company's Line 5 relocation project in northern Wisconsin.
According to the Ashland County Sheriff's Office, the fire was reported around 5.20 Monday morning near Wilson Road in the town of White River.
When deputies arrived, they found two boring machines that had been involved in the fire.
Enbridge says graffiti was also discovered at the site and has described the incident as vandalism.
This is the third
involving Enbridge property in northern Wisconsin over the past month.
On September 14th, a fire broke out at an Enbridge office building in Superior.
Just three days later, another fire damaged drilling equipment at a Line 5 construction site in Ashland County.
Enbridge says it takes these incidents seriously and will cooperate with authorities as they investigate and seek to hold those responsible accountable.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Ashland County Sheriff's Office
Office is also asking anyone who noticed suspicious activity near the site to come forward, including anyone with photos or surveillance footage that could help investigators.

One more county is showing probable cases of measles in Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services says they're now investigating five probable cases of measles in Rock County.
Health workers say these cases are linked to each other but are not connected to the ongoing outbreak in southwest Wisconsin.
This is the seventh county in the state to report measles cases since August.
There are currently 267 confirmed cases of measles.
More than 99% are in people who are not vaccinated again.

It was a day of power at our state capital yesterday as opponents of two proposed high-voltage transmission lines running through Wisconsin gathered to have their voices heard.
The Group No.
765 line organized the event with 267 people registered and visits to 52 legislative offices.
Organizers say they secured commitments from 25 Wisconsin lawmakers during the day of meetings at the Capitol.
Residents raised concerns about property values, farmland and environmental impacts.
The Group wants changes to Wisconsin's transmission line approval laws, a review of regional grid expansion plan and a public hearing on a utility application.
The proposed Maribel and Becky projects would span roughly 330 miles, stretching from southeastern Minnesota across southern Wisconsin to the Illinois border.
Developers say the lines are needed to improve grid reliability and meet growing electricity demand.
Organizers say lawmakers agreed to at least one request, but that doesn't necessarily mean they oppose the projects.
Well, it was sure nice while it lasted, but our brief summer fling last weekend gives way to more fall-like temperatures this week.
