The Washburn County Area Humane Society is holding its 2027 pet photo calendar contest.
Pet owners can submit a photo of their dog or cat with winners determined by the number of votes they receive.
The entry fee is $10 and votes cost $1 each.
The first place winner will receive $500 and be featured on the calendar cover.
Second place will receive $300 and third place is $200.
Another 24 pets will be featured in the calendar with one dog and one
cat selected for each month.
Money raised through the contest will help provide food, shelter, medical care, vaccinations, and spay and neuter services for animals at the Humane Society.
Photos can be submitted and votes can be cast through the Washburn County Area Humane Society's website.
Sawyer County residents will have a chance to get rid of household hazardous waste tomorrow.
The county's annual clean sweep is scheduled for Wednesday, September 23rd from 2 to 6 p.m.
at the Sawyer County Fairgrounds.
The event will have three different collection options.
Residents can bring expired or unwanted medications along with medical sharps.
Any pills should be left in their original packages or containers with the labels attached and sharps need to be in an approved container.
Electronics will
be accepted, including TVs, computers, phones, small kitchen appliances, and power tools.
The Hazardous Waste Collection will take items such as oil-based paint, pesticides, and household cleaners, along with old gasoline, antifreeze, and mercury-containing products.
Most household hazardous waste is accepted at no charge, although some items may have fees.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural
resources is reminding waterfowl hunters to take extra precautions on the water as temperatures start to drop.
The DNR says colder water, changing weather, and heavy hunting gear can make conditions dangerous, especially if a boat becomes unstable.
Hunters should always wear a life jacket while on the water.
As water temperatures drop, the risk of hypothermia increases, and a life jacket can keep someone afloat if they end up in the water.
The DNR also warns against overloading boats.
should account for the weight of passengers, dogs and equipment, and keep gear low and near the center of the boat.
And before heading out, hunters should check the forecast for fog, wind or storms, and make sure their boat has proper lighting, especially when traveling before sunrise or after sunset.
The DNR says it's also important to make sure firearms are unloaded and secured while being transported by boat, as well as telling someone where you're going and when you'll be back.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is accepting applications for its Food Security and Wisconsin Products Grant Program.
The program provides funding to nonprofits to purchase Wisconsin food and distribute it to communities across the state at no cost.
According to a press release, a total of $5 million will be awarded through a competitive review process.
Projects must involve partnerships aimed at strengthening Wisconsin's food security network.
Applicants should also show they
can purchase Wisconsin foods and make those products available at food access sites around the state.
Applications are due by 11.59 p.m.
on October 1st.

A 96-year-old woman reported missing in Iron County Thursday night was found safe after a search involving several agencies.
According to a press release, the Iron County Sheriff's Office says the woman who has dementia was reported missing from her home in the Fisher Lake area of Oma around 7.15 p.m.
She had been missing for about 45 minutes.
Deputies began searching with help from Mercer Fire and EMS and Oma Fire.
A canine team from Gogebic County also helped with the search.
The woman was
found safe around 9 43 that night, lying in a wooded area a short distance from her home.
The sheriff's office said she was cold and disoriented, but otherwise appeared to be OK.
She was evaluated by ambulance personnel and taken back home.
Drivers are seeing another sharp increase at the pump, with fuel prices climbing across Wisconsin and much of the country.

But the record-breaking diesel prices are hitting Wisconsin farmers with a double dose of high costs.
Not only is it costing farmers more to produce the food for our tables, now, as the General Sentinel reports, transport companies are adding new surcharges to move harvests.
Some farmers say their usual transport rates have nearly doubled just as the diesel price has.
Unlike other industries, farmers don't have the option of adjusting their selling price around cost increases.
Local farmers explain their only way to make ends meet is by making cuts, impacting their farms' future.
As of September 18, Wisconsin has broken its all-time diesel price record every day for seven days in a row.
Yesterday's record diesel price of $6.57 for our state's average continues that trend.
The White House is giving a nod to Wisconsin growers.
Silent Night Evergreens in Central Wisconsin will be providing the official Christmas tree for the White House this year.
The Endeavour Tree Farm welcomed the White House Superintendent of Grounds Dale Haney yesterday morning, who came to select the tree.
Haney says the perfect tree needs to be the right height.

Silent Night Evergreens is the 2026 winner of the National Christmas Tree Association's nationwide contest.
The tree selected is a 30-foot tall con-color fur.
It'll be trimmed down and displayed in the blue room for more than 100,000 White House visitors to enjoy this Christmas season.
Don't be alarmed if you hear fighter jets in the sky overnight this week.
The 115th Fighter Wing of the Wisconsin Air National Guard is holding training sessions.
While most exercises take place during the day, pilots and maintenance crews are required to complete night flights to maintain overall readiness.
