In these troubling times, Wisconsin’s sports teams are a powerful force for unity in our state. The Brewers in particular are on a hot streak as they continue their series against the Cubs. However, not everything is hunky-dory when it comes to Wisconsin sports. While many UW schools have successful teams, the mental health of student athletes– particularly women– is in dire need of attention.
Back in February, Kelly Meyerhofer of Milwaukee Journal Sentinel joined us to share her reporting on how UW System is working to address the mental health of student athletes after one of them tragically died by suicide. Now, the Journal Sentinel’s Mark Stewart reports that five former female student athletes are suing their coach for alleged emotionally abusive conduct. Athletes were allegedly punished for seeking mental health care, and other coaching staff was aware of the situation and allowed it to continue. Rather than facing termination, former coach Marisa Mosely was allowed to resign earlier this year.
When it comes down to it, we as supporters of these teams must remember that student athletes are people, too. With that in mind, please don’t harass athletes in person or online.
